A new likelihood model for analyses of pharmacoepidemiologic case-control studies which avoids decision rules for determining latent exposure status.

BACKGROUND: Case-control studies based on pharmaco-epidemiological databases typically use decision rules to determine exposure status from information on dates of prescription redemptions, although this induces misclassification. The reverse Waiting Time Distribution has been suggested as a likelihood based model to estimate the latent exposure status, and we therefore suggest to extend this into a joint likelihood based model, which incorporates both the latent exposure status and the exposure-outcome association. This will achieve consistency and efficiency of the estimates, i.e. they can b

Evidence for a cluster of rare birth defects in the Ain department (France).

BACKGROUND: REMERA (REgistre des Malformations En Rhône-Alpes) is a registry of congenital malformations that covers 58,000 births annually in Central-East France. In 2010, the registry raised an alarm to the health authorities (Santé publique France, SpF) about three cases of a unilateral isolated transverse upper limb reduction defect (UITULRD) in a small subarea; the general prevalence of this defect is one case in 10,000 births. In the following years, more infants were born with the same malformation in the same territory of the Ain department. Public health authorities, supported by an e

Incidence of Symptomatic Pediatric Tarsal Coalition in Olmsted County: A Population-Based Study.

BACKGROUND: Tarsal coalitions are an important reason for foot pain in children. Early estimates placed the prevalence at up to 2%, while more recent data suggest that it is as high as 11% to 13%. To our knowledge, there have been no population-based studies to determine the true incidence of symptomatic tarsal coalitions in a pediatric population. METHODS: A population-based database was used to identify all new diagnoses of symptomatic tarsal coalitions in children 18 years old or younger between 1966 and 2018. Patient records were reviewed for clinical data, and comparisons were made betwe

Predictors of Management of Distal Radius Fractures in Patients Aged >65 Years.

BACKGROUND: Treatment of distal radius fractures (DRFs) in patients aged >65 years is controversial. The purpose of this study was to identify what patient and fracture characteristics may influence the decision to pursue surgical versus nonsurgical treatment in patients aged >65 years sustaining a DRF. METHODS: We queried our institutional DRF database for patients aged >65 years who presented to a single academic, tertiary center hand clinic over a 5-year period. In all, 164 patients treated operatively were identified, and 162 patients treated nonoperatively during the same time period wer

Trends in industry-sponsored research in plastic surgery since implementation of the Sunshine Act.

Financial contributions from industry for physician-led research have been historically challenging to study in plastic surgery. However, as mandated by the Physician Payments Sunshine Act of 2013, the Open Payments Database (OPD) has increased transparency in payments from industry to physicians. This study aimed to analyze trends in industry-sponsored research funding for plastic surgeons. Using the OPD, research payments from industry made to plastic surgeons from 2014 to 2018 were examined. Total payments and number of payments were recorded by recipient's census region (e.g., Northeast, M

Diagnostic accuracy of ICD code versus discharge summary-based query for endocarditis cohort identification.

Studies of infective endocarditis (IE) have relied on International Classification of Disease (ICD) codes to identify cases, a method vulnerable to misclassification. Clinical narrative data could offer greater accuracy and richness to cohort identification. We evaluated two algorithms: 1. a standard query of ICD-9/10 billing codes, with or without procedure codes for echocardiogram and 2. a text query of discharge summaries (DS) that selected on the term “endocarditis” in fields headed by “Discharge Diagnosis” or “Admission Diagnosis” or similar. Further coding extracted valve involved and or

Databases and Bioinformatic Tools for Glycobiology and Glycoproteomics.

Glycosylation plays critical roles in various biological processes and is closely related to diseases. Deciphering the glycocode in diverse cells and tissues offers opportunities to develop new disease biomarkers and more effective recombinant therapeutics. In the past few decades, with the development of glycobiology, glycomics, and glycoproteomics technologies, a large amount of glycoscience data has been generated. Subsequently, a number of glycobiology databases covering glycan structure, the glycosylation sites, the protein scaffolds, and related glycogenes have been developed to store, a

The TUDID Study - Background and Design of a Prospective Cohort.

Prevalence of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus is growing worldwide and one major cause for morbidity and mortality. However, not every patient develops diabetes-related complications, but causes for the individual susceptibility are still not fully understood. As a platform to address this, we initiated the TUDID (TUebingen DIabetes Database) study, a prospective, monocentric, observational study that includes adults with diabetes mellitus who are treated in the inpatient clinic of a University Hospital in southern Germany. Besides a thorough clinical examination and extensive laborat

Can tramadol really induce hyponatraemia? A pharmacovigilance study.

Several papers have described hyponatraemia with tramadol. However, in most reports, several confounding factors can be found. We used the WHO pharmacovigilance database (VigiBase®) to investigate if tramadol alone could be associated with hyponatraemia. All 1992-2019 ICSRs (individual case safety reports) with the preferred term (PT) "hyponatraemia" and tramadol were included. Two disproportionality analyses were performed: (1) after inclusion of all reports, and (2) after exclusion of concomitant hyponatraemic drugs. Results are expressed as reporting odds ratios (ROR; 95% CI) and informatio

A toxicity pathway-oriented approach to develop adverse outcome pathway: AHR activation as a case study.

With numerous new chemicals introduced into the environment everyday, identification of their potential hazards to the environment and human health is a considerable challenge. Developing adverse outcome pathway (AOP) framework is promising in helping to achieve this goal as it can bring In Vitro testing into toxicity measurement and understanding. To explore the toxic mechanism underlying environmental chemicals via the AOP approach, an integration of adequate experimental data with systems biology understanding is preferred. Here, we describe a novel method to develop reliable and sensible A

A Global Bibliometric Analysis of Hallux Valgus Research (1999-2019).

Hallux valgus (HV) is a very common deformity among foot disorders, therefore attracting strong interest from foot and ankle surgeons. We investigated publication trends on HV in the literature. The analysis was conducted through an electronic search of the Web of Science database for publications between 1999 and 2019, studying the data of origin through bibliometrics. The following search string was utilized: TI = (hallux valgus* OR hallux abductovalgus*) with filters for the English language and documents in article format. The "Bibliometrix" package of R software was used for the bibliomet
