Histomonas meleagridis: immunohistochemical localization of parasitic cells in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue sections of experimentally infected turkeys demonstrates the wide spread of the parasite in its host.

In the present investigation, a polyclonal antibody-based immunohistochemical technique was developed to localize Histomonas meleagridis in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissues of experimentally infected turkeys. The developed technique was highly specific for histomonads as no immunohistochemical reaction was observed with cultures of Tetratrichomonas gallinarum, Trichomonas gallinae and Blastocystis sp. In addition, tissues positive for various other protozoan parasites and fungi were also tested to evaluate the specificity of the technique. It was possible to detect immunohistochemical

Expanding the host range: Dirofilaria immitis and Crenosoma vulpis identified by morphological and molecular methods in brown bears (Ursus arctos) from Romania.

The brown bear (Ursus arctos) represents the largest carnivoran species in Europe, yet little data is available on respiratory parasitic fauna. While Romania hosts the largest population in Europe, the present study aimed to investigate the prevalence and diversity of lungworms in free-ranging brown bears from Romania using post-mortem examination followed by morphological and molecular identification. Between 2019 and 2025, 168 brown bear carcasses originating from 19 Romanian counties were examined by complete necropsy of the cardio-respiratory system. Detected parasites were collected, morp

Cryptosporidium infections in animals across Asia (2015-2025): a systematic review and meta-analysis of prevalence, host range, geographic distribution, and molecular epidemiology.

Cryptosporidium spp. is a globally significant protozoan parasite with profound implications for animals, humans, and environmental health. Despite extensive research, its distribution, prevalence, and diversity across Asia remain fragmented. A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted on studies published between 2015 and 2025, incorporating 329 investigations from 29 Asian countries and analyzing 142,484 animal specimens. Pooled prevalence was calculated, and molecular epidemiological data were synthesized to characterize species distribution and subtype diversity. The overall poole

Extensive cultivation of human gut phages revealing undescribed Bacteroidaceae phages.

The isolated and characterized gut phages remain rare. Most of the gut phages that have been isolated and propagated thus far are lytic phages, leaving significant gaps in the study of gut temperate phages. In this study, we successfully isolated a large-scale collection of gut bacteria and phages, containing 1,679 bacterial strains from 86 species and 79 phages that infect bacteria from 26 different species. Among the phage isolates, 32 are temperate phages and two of these temperate phages were directly isolated from faecal samples of healthy human donors. Sequence comparisons and analysis s

Mounting Evidence for an Expanded Host Range of Influenza B Viruses.

Influenza B viruses (IBV) belong to the family of Orthomyxoviridae and circulate annually in humans causing respiratory illness. Although they are considered an exclusively human pathogen, there is evidence of IBV infections in animals, including wildlife, companion animals and livestock. In addition, metagenomic studies have identified novel orthomyxoviruses in amphibians and fish that appear related to IBV, suggesting influenza viruses, including IBV, have been associated with vertebrates across their evolutionary history. In this review, we summarise our current knowledge of potential IBV a

Sarcocystis infection in domestic and wild avian hosts: Inseparable flight partners.

Sarcocystis infections have been reported from numerous avian species. A remarkable number of valid Sarcocystis species infecting birds have been identified and named having avian species as intermediate hosts (n = 32). Only 14 species have their complete biological cycle known due to the difficulties in conducting in vivo experiments. In addition, at least 16 Sarcocystis species have been confirmed by molecular techniques to use birds as their definitive hosts. The present paper reviews recent findings in the field and remarks on the contribution of molecular tools to unravel important aspect

Investigation of coronaviruses, paramyxoviruses, and poxviruses in free-ranging anteaters and armadillos: a search for the unknown in Brazil.

Xenarthrans face increasing viral threats from anthropogenic pressures and domestic animals. In this study, we investigated the presence of coronaviruses, paramyxoviruses, and poxviruses in anteaters and armadillos from Brazilian biomes. We screened 236 individuals for these viruses by molecular methods. Canine distemper virus (CDV) was identified in four giant anteaters and one six-banded armadillo. A poxvirus, showing 88% sequence identity to molluscum contagiosum virus, was detected in one giant anteater. No coronaviruses were detected. These findings expand our knowledge on the host range

A universe of human gut-derived bacterial prophages: unveiling the hidden viral players in intestinal microecology.

Prophages, which are an existing form of temperate phages that integrate into host genomes, have been found extensively present in diverse bacterial species. The human gut microbiome, characterized by its complexity, dynamism, and interconnectivity among multiple species, remains inadequately understood in terms of the global landscape of bacterial prophages. Here, we analyzed 43,942 human gut-derived bacterial genomes (439 species of 12 phyla) and identified 105,613 prophage regions in ~ 92% of them. 16254 complete prophages were distributed in ~ 24% of bacteria, indicating an extremely uneve

Outbreak of the South American tomato leafminer, Tuta absoluta, in the Chinese mainland: geographic and potential host range expansion.

BACKGROUND: In 2017 Tuta absoluta was identified as an invasive species in China. Due to its rapid geographic expansion and the severe crop damage it causes, T. absoluta poses a serious threat to China's tomato production industry. To determine its geographic distribution and host range, intensive surveys and routine monitoring were conducted across the Chinese mainland between 2018 and 2019. The population colonization coefficient (PCC; ratio of colonized sites and prefectures) and population occurrence index (POI; ratio of infested host species and PCCs) were calculated. RESULTS: In northwe

Metagenomic next-generation sequencing for the diagnosis of suspected pneumonia in immunocompromised patients.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the potential of metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS), compared with that of comprehensive conventional microbiological tests (CMTs), of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) as a front-line diagnostic for immunocompromised patients with suspected pneumonia. METHODS: Sixty critically ill immunocompromised patients undergoing both mNGS of BALF and CMTs for suspected pneumonia were retrospectively analysed. The diagnostic performance was compared between mNGS and CMTs, using the composite diagnosis as the reference standard. RESULTS: Forty-nine patients were diag

Bacteriophages vB_Sen-TO17 and vB_Sen-E22, Newly Isolated Viruses from Chicken Feces, Specific for Several Salmonella enterica Strains.

Two newly discovered bacteriophages, isolated from chicken feces and infecting Salmonella enterica strains, are described in this report. These phages have been named vB_Sen-TO17 and vB_Sen-E22, and we present their molecular and functional characterization. Both studied viruses are able to infect several S. enterica strains and develop lytically, but their specific host ranges differ significantly. Electron microscopic analyses of virions have been performed, and full genome sequences were determined and characterized, along with molecular phylogenetic studies. Genomes of vB_Sen-TO17 (ds DNA

Experimental infection of Phlebotomus perniciosus and Phlebotomus tobbi with different Leishmania tropica strains.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis due to Leishmania tropica is increasingly documented in Europe and the Middle East. Besides its specific vector, Phlebotomus sergenti, permissive Phlebotomus sand flies are suspected as potential vectors of L. tropica. We investigated the susceptibility of two widely distributed species, Phlebotomus perniciosus and Phlebotomus tobbi. Laboratory-reared sand flies were infected experimentally with L. tropica strains differing in lipophosphoglycan epitopes, geographical distribution and epidemiology. High infection rates, heavy parasite loads and fully developed late-stage

Contrasting consequences of different defence strategies in a natural multihost-parasite system.

Hosts counteract infections using two distinct defence strategies, resistance (reduction in pathogen fitness) and tolerance (limitation of infection damage). These strategies have been minimally investigated in multi-host systems, where they may vary across host species, entailing consequences both for hosts (virulence) and parasites (transmission). Comprehending the interplay among resistance, tolerance, virulence and parasite success is highly relevant for our understanding of the ecology and evolution of infectious and parasitic diseases. Our work investigated the interaction between an ins

The spread and evolution of rabies virus: conquering new frontiers.

Rabies is a lethal zoonotic disease that is caused by lyssaviruses, most often rabies virus. Despite control efforts, sporadic outbreaks in wildlife populations are largely unpredictable, underscoring our incomplete knowledge of what governs viral transmission and spread in reservoir hosts. Furthermore, the evolutionary history of rabies virus and related lyssaviruses remains largely unclear. Robust surveillance efforts combined with diagnostics and disease modelling are now providing insights into the epidemiology and evolution of rabies virus. The immune status of the host, the nature of exp

Extension of the Avian Host Range of Collyriclosis in Europe.

We describe cases of collyriclosis in apodiform and passeriform birds in Portugal, Switzerland, and Germany. We extend the host range of Collyriculm faba to include apodiform birds ( Apus apus , Apus melba , and Apus pallidus ) and the passerine Sitta europaea (Eurasian Nuthatch). Infections varied in severity from an incidental finding to severe debilitation and death. The infection route remains unclear with the apparent absence from Germany, Portugal, and Switzerland of the first intermediate host of C. faba, the aquatic gastropod Bythinella austriaca, implying that other organisms might be

Resistance to Arrenurus spp. Parasitism in Odonates: Patterns Across Species and Comparisons Between a Resistant and Susceptible Host.

Some adult odonates resist parasitism by larval water mites (Arrenurus spp.) with melanotic encapsulation, in which the mite's stylestome is clogged and the mite starves. In summer 2014, we counted the engorged and resisted mites on 2,729 adult odonates sampled by aerial net at 11 water bodies in Greenville Co. and Pickens Co., SC, and tested the hypothesis that the frequency and intensity of resistance correlates with parasite prevalence (the percentage of parasitized hosts). Resistance prevalence (the percentage of parasitized hosts that resisted at least one mite) varied significantly among

Isolation and Host Range of Bacteriophage with Lytic Activity against Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Potential Use as a Fomite Decontaminant.

Staphylococcus aureus (SA) is a commensal bacterium and opportunistic pathogen commonly associated with humans and is capable of causing serious disease and death including sepsis, pneumonia, and meningitis. Methicillin-resistant SA (MRSA) isolates are typically resistant to many available antibiotics with the common exception of vancomycin. The presence of vancomycin resistance in some SA isolates combined with the current heavy use of vancomycin to treat MRSA infections indicates that MRSA may achieve broad resistance to vancomycin in the near future. New MRSA treatments are clearly needed.
