Hidden support for the lionesses: a breast/bra intervention.

Despite health and performance benefits of appropriate breast support in sport, elite women athletes' knowledge of breasts/bras is poor leading to poor bra choices, breast pain and performance decrements. This multiphase intervention assessed breast/bra issues and preferences, individually prescribed sports bras and evaluated outcomes for the England Senior Women footballers. Breast/bra workshops were delivered to England players; all 36 completed pre-intervention surveys and breast/bra assessments, before being prescribed bras six weeks before European and World Championships (2022, 2023). 24

Influence of neoprene ankle orthoses on dynamic balance during a vertical jump in healthy individuals and with sprain history: A cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: A sprain describes an excessive amount of force or strain on a ligament, which may or may not lead to its rupture. Orthoses are among the most common modalities prescribed as a conservative treatment for ankle instability and sprain. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to analyse the effect of neoprene orthosis on the balance and functionality of healthy individuals and volunteers with lateral ankle sprains METHODS: We evaluated 12 healthy volunteers (control group) and 12 volunteers diagnosed with a sprain and/or instability (patient group). A total of 14 men and 10 women participated in the s

Short Term Results of Early Treatment of Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip or Luxation with Pavlik Harness in Human Position.

Background and Objectives: This study shows a sufficient treatment with the Pavlik harness for all patients through all phases of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) if there is a strict regime. Materials and Methods: There was an ultrasound measurement stage of IIc or worse (D, IIIa/b, IVa/b) in 159 out of 7372 newborns between 1995 and 2006 (2.15%). This is an indication for treatment with the Pavlik harness. Overall, 203 dysplastic hips were treated initially with our regime. After detection, we started the application of the Pavlik harness immediately in the 'human position'. There we

Incidence and risk factors for persistent acetabular dysplasia in patients with developmental dislocation of the hip treated by Pavlik Harness.

Some patients with developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) before 6 months of age successfully treated by Pavlik Harness (PH) still had persistent acetabular dysplasia (PAD). This study aimed to investigate the incidence and risk factors for PAD in patients with DDH treated by PH. We retrospectively reviewed the data of 89 patients (109 hips; mean age, 3.2 ± 1.5 months) with DDH treated by PH. Prior to treatment, all patients underwent ultrasound examination and classified according to Graf's method. PH was terminated once the hip achieved imaging recovery criteria. At final follow-up, the ac

Clinical and sonographic improvement of developmental dysplasia of the hip: analysis of 948 patients.

BACKGROUND: Developmental dysplasia of the hip is a common condition, which varies in severity. Abduction treatment is widely used to correct the development of the hips, but mild forms of DDH can also recover spontaneously. The purpose of this study was to evaluate factors affecting the rate of improvement of developmental dysplasia of the hip, and evaluate any risk factors slowing the process. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study population consisted of patients diagnosed with DDH in Tampere University hospital in the years 1998-2018. Data were retrospectively collected, and associations between

Effectiveness of Quickcast Versus Custom-Fabricated Thermoplastic Orthosis Immobilization for the Treatment of Mallet Fingers: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

BACKGROUND: Mallet finger is a common injury involving a detachment of the terminal extensor tendon from the distal phalanx. This injury is usually treated with immobilization in a cast or splint. The purpose of this study is to compare outcomes of mallet fingers treated with either a cast (Quickcast) or a traditional thermoplastic custom-fabricated orthosis. METHODS: Our study was a prospective, assessor-blinded, single-center randomized clinical trial of 58 consecutive patients with the diagnosis of bony or soft tissue mallet finger treated with immobilization. Patients were randomized to e

A preliminary study to identify data needs for improving fit of hand and wrist orthosis using verbal protocol analysis.

The delayed delivery, poor fitting and discomfort of customised orthoses are reported in rehabilitation clinics as resulting in more invasive interventions. The current practice of orthosis customisation relies heavily upon the experience and fabrication processes of therapists. In order to better understand the current practice, and thus identify data that is required for better comfort moving towards a data-driven customisation, this article describes a study generating working models of therapists. Customisations of hand and wrist orthoses for 18 patients were observed. Verbal protocol anal

Neck Injuries.

Neck injuries are relatively uncommon but have the potential to cause serious and permanent disability. In athletes, injuries are most common in contact sports, and occur with direct axial loading with a forward-flexed neck. Soft tissue and peripheral nerve injuries are typically minor and self-limiting, with excellent recovery potential and return to activities based on symptoms. Concern for devastating spinal cord injuries has led to routine immobilization using spine boards and hard cervical collars. This approach may provide more harm than benefit when applied universally, and a more commo

Influence of elastic lumbar support belts on trunk muscle function in patients with non-specific acute lumbar back pain.

BACKGROUND: A well-known supportive treatment for acute nonspecific back pain, elastic back support belts, are valued for their ability to accelerate natural self-healing, but there are concerns of a deconditioning effect due to their reliance on passive stabilization. METHODS: To evaluate the systematic effects of elastic abdominal belts on the trunk musculature, a total of 36 persons with acute lumbar back pain (no longer than one week) were divided into two groups: an abdominal belt wearing group (B) and a non-abdominal belt wearing control group (C). All were examined over a period of thr

Orthotic care needs in a cohort of neurological rehabilitation inpatients.

AIM: Orthotic management is frequently part of the rehabilitation of various neurological conditions in adults such as stroke, peripheral neuropathies, spinal cord injuries and multiple sclerosis. Despite this, there are limited data available on the implementation of orthotic care in practice. The primary aim of this study is to establish the proportion of inpatients in a mixed neurorehabilitation cohort which receive orthotic assessment and treatment. The secondary aim was to document the overall care pathway. METHODS: Existing data were reviewed retrospectively. Data gathered included pati

On the biological mechanics and energetics of the hip joint muscle-tendon system assisted by passive hip exoskeleton.

Passive exoskeletons have potential advantages in reducing metabolic energy cost. We consider a passive elastic exoskeleton (peEXO) providing hip flexion moment to assist hip flexors during walking, our goal is to use a biomechanical model to explore the biological mechanics and energetics of the hip joint muscle-tendon-exotendon system for obtaining the optimum stiffness of this peEXO at the muscle-level. Based on our developed hip musculoskeletal model capable of replicating human-like behaviors, the hip peEXO is firstly abstracted as a spring (i.e. exotendon), we then simulate the peEXO ass

The "shirt collar sign" of cervical dystonia.

The diagnosis of cervical dystonia (CD) is clinical. We describe a physical examination observation that has been noted in CD patients. There is a tendency for their shirt collars to be shifted to one side. We validated this apparently consistent finding by having blinded evaluators rating the symmetry of the shirt collars in CD and non-cervical dystonia control subjects. A high correlation was found between the physical finding which we call "shirt collar sign" and the diagnosis. "Shirt collar sign" may be a helpful sign in diagnosing CD.
