Fetal tongue posture associated with micrognathia: An ultrasound marker of cleft secondary palate?

Cleft lip and cleft palate (CP) are the most common facial malformations. Two-dimensional (2D) ultrasound (US) is the first-line examination in the prenatal diagnosis of CP. Three-dimensional, four-dimensional US and MRI provide a better detection of facial clefts. We present two fetuses with micrognathia and suspected secondary CP on 2D US: fetal tongue appeared in an unusual position (low tip and high dorsum position) and showed uncoordinated movements. MRI did not confirm the US suspicion, but at birth the two fetuses were affected by Pierre Robin sequence.

Predicting Ambulatory Function Based on Infantile Lower Extremity Posture Types in Amyoplasia Arthrogryposis.

BACKGROUND: Arthrogryposis multiplex congenita (AMC) is a nonprogressive syndrome with multiple rigid joints, fibrotic periarticular tissue, and muscular fibrosis. The most common subgroup is amyoplasia. Ambulation is one of the most significant functions of the lower extremities as it translates to increased functionality and independence in adulthood. There is no predicative scale to determine ambulation at maturity for the infant with amyoplasia. It is believed lower extremity resting position of infants with amyoplasia potentially correlates with ambulation at maturity. The purpose of this

Morphology, pathology, and the vertebral posture of the La Chapelle-aux-Saints Neandertal.

Although the early postural reconstructions of the Neandertals as incompletely erect were rejected half a century ago, recent studies of Neandertal vertebral remains have inferred a hypolordotic, flat lower back and spinal imbalance for them, including the La Chapelle-aux-Saints 1 skeleton. These studies form part of a persistent trend to view the Neandertals as less "human" than ourselves despite growing evidence for little if any differences in basic functional anatomy and behavioral capabilities. We have therefore reassessed the spinal posture of La Chapelle-aux-Saints 1 using a new pelvic …

Normal force distribution and posture of a hand pressing on a flat surface.

Hand strength data are needed to understand and predict hand postures and finger loads while placing the hand on an object or surface. This study aims to analyze the effect of hand posture and surface orientation on hand force while pressing a flat surface. Twelve participants, 6 females and 6 males ages 19-25, performed three exertions (100%, 30% and 10% MVC- Maximum Voluntary Contraction) perpendicular to a plate in 4 angles (-45°, 0°, 45° and 90° with respect to the horizontal plane) at elbow height. Exertions involved pushing in two postures: (1) whole hand and (2) constrained to only usin…

Effect of reclining angle on lumbar lordosis at driving posture: A radiological evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Optimal seatback angles for automobile drivers' seats have been investigated based on comfort and back muscle activities; however, radiology supported evidences are scarce. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate optimal range of the seatback reclining regarding torso angles for an automobile driver's seat to preserve lumbar lordosis. METHODS: Thirty-one healthy volunteers were recruited among five body type categories. Lateral lumbar spine X-rays were obtained for the neutral sitting posture without seatback (reference), and with reclining angles of 23∘ to 33∘ by 2∘ int…

Acute effects of exercise posture on executive function in transient ischemic attack patients.

In patients with stroke or transient ischemic attacks (TIA), a decline in executive function may limit an individual's ability to process motor tasks and relearn motor skills. The purpose of this study was to assess the acute effect of exercise posture (seated vs. supine cycle ergometry) on executive function and prefrontal cortex perfusion in patients with TIA. Eleven TIA patients (65 ± 10 years) and 15 age-matched, healthy controls (HC; 62 ± 7 years) completed two exercise tests to maximal capacity (one seated, one supine) and two 30-min submaximal exercise tests (one seated, one supine). Ex…

Cortical activity modulations underlying age-related performance differences during posture-cognition dual tasking.

To date, no systematic research investigating cortical correlates of performance changes in dual tasking has been reported in the elderly population. Thus, we monitored whole-scalp cortical activations (EEG) during both single task and posture-cognition dual tasking with the main goal of understanding cortical activity modulations underlying age-related differences on posture-cognition dual tasking conditions. Postural and cognitive data analyses showed that elderly people had decreased cognitive performance even during challenging single cognitive tasks. Working memory impairments in the elde…

Influence of body posture on defecation: a prospective study of "The Thinker" position.

PURPOSE: We hypothesized that bending the upper body into what we have termed "The Thinker" position facilitates defecation. This study aimed to assess the influence of "The Thinker" position on defecation. METHODS: This is the prospective single-group study. Patients who could not evacuate the paste in normal sitting position on cinedefecography between January and June 2013 were enrolled in this study. Cinedefecography was first performed in the sitting position; if the patient was unable to evacuate the paste, images were obtained in "The Thinker" position. Patients who were able to evacua

Are temporomandibular disorders associated with habitual sleeping body posture or nasal septal deviation?

Numerous factors can be considered for the etiology of temporomandibular disorders (TMD). The aim of the present study was to investigate whether the presence of both nasal septal deviation (NSD) and habitual prone sleeping posture (HPSP) predisposes TMD. We evaluated 200 subjects in 4 groups. Group I (NSD-, HPSP-/control group), Group II (NSD+, HPSP-), Group III (NSD-, HPSP+), Group IV (NSD+, HPSP+). All patients were examined according to the research diagnostic criteria to determine the presence of TMD. Group IV had the highest value for TMD incidence (44 %). Thus, we found that the presenc…
