[Diabetic retinopathy].

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a vision-threatening microvascular complication of diabetes and the leading cause of blindness in working-age people. At the beginning of the metabolic disorder and in early stages of DR the patient's eyesight is often not affected. Depending on the duration of diabetes and in more advanced stages of DR the vision is compromised through the presence of diabetic macular edema (DME) and/or proliferative retinal complications. The management of DR comprises regular ophthalmic examinations according to clinical guidelines, the targeted application of multimodal imaging

Ceruloplasmin and Ferritin Changes in Ocular Fluids from Patients with Vitreoretinal Diseases: Relation with Neuroinflammation and Drusen Formation.

This pilot study explored whether the ceruloplasmin (CP) and ferritin (FT) levels in ocular fluids could serve as biomarkers for early neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and other dementias). CP and FT are known to modulate neurodegenerative tissue responses. We analysed aqueous and vitreous samples from 26 patients (8M/18F, aged 60-85) who were undergoing elective vitreoretinal (VR) surgery. Of these, 14 had idiopathic epiretinal membranes (ERMs), 6 had idiopathic macular holes (MH), and 6 were patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD) who presented with VR disorders (VRDs). C

IMI Pathologic Myopia.

Pathologic myopia is a major cause of visual impairment worldwide. Pathologic myopia is distinctly different from high myopia. High myopia is a high degree of myopic refractive error, whereas pathologic myopia is defined by a presence of typical complications in the fundus (posterior staphyloma or myopic maculopathy equal to or more serious than diffuse choroidal atrophy). Pathologic myopia often occurs in eyes with high myopia, however its complications especially posterior staphyloma can also occur in eyes without high myopia. Owing to a recent advance in ocular imaging, an objective and acc

[Intraoperative optical coherence tomography in explorative vitrectomy in patients with vitreous haemorrhage-a case series].

BACKGROUND: High-resolution spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) is a gold standard technique for diagnosis, management and monitoring of patients with vitreoretinal diseases. Preoperative diagnostics for evaluation of intraocular and retinal status in patients with vitreous haemorrhage are limited, thus final therapeutic decisions can only be made during explorative vitrectomy. We evaluated the use of intraoperative SD-OCT (iSD-OCT) as a real-time additional diagnostic tool during explorative vitrectomy in patients with vitreous haemorrhage. METHODS: We report on 9 patients

An endoscopic overview of the anterior vitreous base in retinal detachment and anterior proliferative vitreoretinopathy.

PURPOSE: Anterior proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) is an important cause of persistent or recurrent retinal detachment (RD). Endoscopy provides 360° panoramic viewing of the vitreous cavity and high-magnification viewing of the anterior vitreous base (AVB). This study describes the 'in vivo' anatomy and pathoanatomy of the AVB using an ocular endoscope in RD and anterior PVR. METHODS: An intraoperative analysis of over 2000 consecutive eyes undergoing vitrectomy for RD operated with endoscopy-assisted vitrectomy was performed. It was recorded in notes dictated during surgery and in stand

Profile of ocriplasmin and its potential in the treatment of vitreomacular adhesion.

The recent approval by the US Food and Drug Administration of ocriplasmin for the treatment of symptomatic vitreomacular adhesion (VMA), often associated with vitreomacular traction (VMT) and macular hole (MH), has brought new attention to the field of pharmacologic vitreolysis. The need for an enzyme to split the vitreomacular interface, which is formed by a strong adhesive interaction between the posterior vitreous cortex and the internal limiting membrane, historically stems from pediatric eye surgery. This review summarizes the different anatomic classifications of posterior vitreous detac
