Infection with schistosome parasites in snails leads to increased predation by prawns: implications for human schistosomiasis control.

Schistosomiasis - a parasitic disease that affects over 200 million people across the globe - is primarily transmitted between human definitive hosts and snail intermediate hosts. To reduce schistosomiasis transmission, some have advocated disrupting the schistosome life cycle through biological control of snails, achieved by boosting the abundance of snails' natural predators. But little is known about the effect of parasitic infection on predator-prey interactions, especially in the case of schistosomiasis. Here, we present the results of laboratory experiments performed on Bulinus truncatus

Fitness cost and realized heritability of resistance to spinosad in Chrysoperla carnea (Neuroptera: Chrysopidae).

The common green lacewing Chrysoperla carnea is a key biological control agent employed in integrated pest management (IPM) programs for managing various insect pests. Spinosad is used for the management of pests in ornamental plants, fruit trees, vegetable and field crops all over the world, including Pakistan. A field-collected population of C. carnea was selected with spinosad and fitness costs and realized heritability were investigated. After selection for five generations, C. carnea developed 12.65- and 73.37-fold resistance to spinosad compared to the field and UNSEL populations. The re

Production of biocontrol traits by banana field fluorescent Pseudomonads and comparison with chemical fungicide.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolated from banana field rhizosphere produced different antifungal metabolites like bactriocin, hydrogen cyanide and siderophore. Bacteriocinogenic, siderophoregenic, and HCN rich broth of isolate inhibited the growth of phytopathogen like Aspergilus niger, Aspergilus flavus, Fusarium oxysporum and Alternaria alternata. The isolate exhibited more antifungal activity and comparatively low MIC vis-a-vis commonly used copper based systemic chemical fungicide;bil cop.

Antiviral treatment for the control of pandemic influenza: some logistical constraints.

Disease control programmes for an influenza pandemic will rely initially on the deployment of antiviral drugs such as Tamiflu, until a vaccine becomes available. However, such control programmes may be severely hampered by logistical constraints such as a finite stockpile of drugs and a limit on the distribution rate. We study the effects of such constraints using a compartmental modelling approach. We find that the most aggressive possible antiviral programme minimizes the final epidemic size, even if this should lead to premature stockpile run-out. Moreover, if the basic reproductive number

Changes in toxicity and effectiveness with timing of drug administration: implications for drug safety.

The effectiveness and toxicity of many drugs can vary depending on the time of administration in relation to 24-hour rhythms of biochemical, physiological and behavioural processes under the control of the circadian clock. Such chronopharmacological phenomena are influenced by not only the pharmacokinetics but also pharmacodynamics of medications. Chronotherapy is especially relevant when the risk and/or intensity of the symptoms of disease vary predictably over time as exemplified by allergic rhinitis, arthritis, asthma, myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure, stroke and peptic ulcer

The antagonistic strain Bacillus subtilis UMAF6639 also confers protection to melon plants against cucurbit powdery mildew by activation of jasmonate- and salicylic acid-dependent defence responses.

Biological control of plant diseases has gained acceptance in recent years. Bacillus subtilis UMAF6639 is an antagonistic strain specifically selected for the efficient control of the cucurbit powdery mildew fungus Podosphaera fusca, which is a major threat to cucurbits worldwide. The antagonistic activity relies on the production of the antifungal compounds iturin and fengycin. In a previous study, we found that UMAF6639 was able to induce systemic resistance (ISR) in melon and provide additional protection against powdery mildew. In the present work, we further investigated in detail this se

Redcliffe Salaman's Scheme for Raising Virus-Free Potato Stocks: professionalization, institutionalization and regulation in interwar Britain's plant virus research.

This article examines Redcliffe N. Salaman's (1874-1955) efforts to establish a national system for producing virus-free seed potatoes in 1930s Britain. It explores how scientific authority was mobilized to reshape agricultural practices and assert regulatory control over seed production. Although Salaman's proposals were never fully realized, they laid the groundwork for enduring strategies to improve potato crop health by protecting seed from infectious agents and their insect vectors. Salaman's work drew on both traditional horticultural knowledge and emerging microbiological techniques, sp

When 'Dirty' Drugs Become Useful: Peptide-Guided Exposure Engineering for the Repurposing of Cancer Drugs.

Drug repurposing in oncology is often framed as a drug-target matching exercise, yet many candidates with plausible biological rationales fail in the clinic. In solid tumors, therapeutic outcomes are constrained not only by pharmacological target relevance but also by limited tumor accessibility, heterogeneous intratumoral exposure, loss of context-dependent activity, and dose-limiting systemic toxicity. This perspective argues that repurposing strategies should treat exposure engineering as a design principle alongside molecular selectivity. Peptides that bind cell- or matrix-associated molec

Ochratoxin A in human blood in relation to Balkan endemic nephropathy and urinary tract tumours in Bulgaria.

Ochratoxin A is suspected of being one of the etiological agents responsible for Balkan endemic nephropathy and the associated urinary tract tumours. Contamination of cereals by this mycotoxin has been found to be more frequent in areas of endemic nephropathy than in areas where the disease is absent. As ochratoxin A binds to serum albumin, it should be detectable in biological fluids from exposed populations. A survey was thus conducted to determine the occurrence of ochratoxin A in blood from people living in the endemic area who were either affected or unaffected by the two diseases and in

Successful Treatment of Palmoplantar Psoriasis With Bimekizumab Following Secondary Loss of Response to Brodalumab: A Case Report.

Palmoplantar psoriasis is a rare variant of psoriasis localised to the palms and soles. The condition accounts for approximately 3%-4% of all psoriasis cases, and disease severity is often underestimated by traditional measures such as the Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) score. Other assessment tools, including the Palmoplantar Psoriasis Global Assessment (PPPGA) score, are frequently used instead. Topical therapies such as corticosteroids or vitamin D analogues form the basis of initial management. Systemic therapies involving biologic agents are often reserved for more severe cases

Cell population data as predictive biomarkers for biologic therapy response in psoriasis.

BACKGROUND: Biologic agents have significantly improved psoriasis treatment, but patient responses exhibit considerable heterogeneity, highlighting the urgent need for practical predictive biomarkers of therapeutic efficacy. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: This prospective cohort study enrolled 422 psoriasis patients and 150 healthy controls. Sixteen CPD parameters were measured using a hematology analyzer. We analyzed associations between baseline CPD and disease severity as well as inflammatory markers, assessed their predictive value for treatment response over 48 weeks of biologic therapy, a

INTRODUCTION: Polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR), a common disease in individuals older than 50 in the western world, is characterized by bilateral inflammatory pain involving the shoulder girdle and less commonly the neck and pelvic girdle. The main goals of the currently available treatment are to induce remission and prevent relapse. AREAS COVERED: This review briefly presents the main epidemiological and clinical features of PMR and discusses in depth both its classical management as well as new therapies used in PMR. EXPERT OPINION: In general, patients with isolated PMR experience a rapid re

Systemic therapy of childhood atopic dermatitis.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common childhood inflammatory disease that, in a small percentage of cases, can become severe enough to require potent systemic treatment. Many trials have been conducted with systemic agents for the treatment of severe pediatric AD; we review the evidence here. Although corticosteroids are widely used in practice, they are not generally recommended as a systemic treatment option for AD in children. Most patients experience a relatively rapid and robust response to cyclosporine. Treating children with cyclosporine long term is troubling; however, azathioprine, mycop

Role of topical and systemic immunosuppression in aqueous-deficient dry eye disease.

Immunosuppression in aqueous-deficient dry eye disease (ADDE) is required not only to improve the symptoms and signs but also to prevent further progression of the disease and its sight-threatening sequelae. This immunomodulation can be achieved through topical and/or systemic medications, and the choice of one drug over the other is determined by the underlying systemic disease. These immunosuppressive agents require a minimum of 6-8 weeks to achieve their beneficial effect, and during this time, the patient is usually placed on topical corticosteroids. Antimetabolites such as methotrexate, a

Efficacy and safety of CounterFlow in animal models of hemorrhage.

INTRODUCTION: Hemorrhage is a major cause of battlefield mortality, contributing to 91% of potentially survivable combat-related deaths. Death from hemorrhage often occurs in pre-hospital settings, and more efficacious hemorrhage control interventions are needed to extend survival and enable casualties to reach definitive surgery. CounterFlow is a novel topical hemostatic agent that uses self-propelling particles to deliver thrombin and tranexamic acid against active bleeding. It achieves and maintains hemostasis at the site of injury through a combination of mechanical, biological, and chemic
