Deaf, blind or deaf-blind: Is touch enhanced?

When someone looses one type of sensory input, s/he may compensate by using the sensory information conveyed by other senses. To verify whether loosing a sense or two has consequences on a spared sensory modality, namely touch, and whether these consequences depend on the type of sensory loss, we investigated the effects of deafness and blindness on temporal and spatial tactile tasks in deaf, blind and deaf-blind people. Deaf and deaf-blind people performed the spatial tactile task better than the temporal one, while blind and controls showed the opposite pattern. Deaf and deaf-blind participa…

Causes of blindness in children in the blind schools of Ethiopia.

A total of 721 children in the six schools for the blind in Ethiopia were studied. In 1988-1989 histories were taken to ascertain the predisposing factors and ophthalmological examinations and records were used to determine the causes of blindness. Ninety-five per cent of those examined had bilateral blindness, 12% did not know how they had become blind and, of those who provided information on how they became blind, 21% knew that they were born blind, 30% implicated measles as being responsible, and 13% implicated 'mitch' which is an Amharic term used to describe a very wide range of nonspeci…

Ophthalmic Trauma: An Overlooked Global Cause of Preventable Blindness and Disability.

PURPOSE: Ophthalmic trauma is a substantial yet overlooked public health challenge, pertinent across all age groups, geographies, and socioeconomic statuses. Despite being largely preventable, it constitutes a major cause of monocular vision loss and long-term disability-adjusted life years among ophthalmic conditions, with a disproportionately high burden in low- and middle-income countries. Integrating original data from the International Globe and Adnexal Trauma Epidemiology Study (IGATES) registry, this hybrid perspective provides an overview of the global burden of ophthalmic trauma and e

Understanding Glaucoma: Why it Remains a Leading Cause of Blindness Worldwide.

Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness worldwide and is often referred to as the "silent thief of sight", because it often progresses without noticeable symptoms until significant vision loss occurs. With an estimated 76 million patients affected in 2020 and a forecast of over 111 million by 2040, the global situation requires urgent attention. Vision loss caused by glaucoma is irreversible but largely preventable, highlighting the importance of early detection and treatment. Diagnosis presents significant challenges, particularly due to the asymptomatic nature of the …

Impaired rapid neural face categorization after reversing long-lasting congenital blindness.

Transient early visual deprivation in humans impairs the processing of faces more than of other object categories. While configural face processing and face individuation appear to be largely impaired in sight recovery individuals following congenital visual deprivation, their behavioral ability to categorize stimuli as faces has been described as preserved. Here we thoroughly investigated rapid automatic face categorization in individuals who had recovered sight after congenital blindness. Eighteen participants (6 women, 12 men) who had undergone congenital cataract reversal surgery participa…

Right-sided complete blindness post-kyphoscoliosis correction surgery - A case report.

BACKGROUND: Visual loss post spine surgery is a rare but serious complication that can occur after elective spine surgeries. Three pathological mechanisms usually cause it: raised intraocular pressure-mediated damage, central retinal artery occlusion, and cortical blindness. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 13-year-old male developed permanent vision loss after undergoing prone spinal deformity correction surgery (i.e., D3 vertebra excision and overcorrection of the spinal curve) for spastic paraplegia. He developed a complete loss of vision in the right eye on postoperative day 2, which was later diagnos…

Mantle cell lymphoma in the sphenoid sinus showing acute bilateral blindness.

A 57-year-old man was referred to our department with a mass in the sphenoid sinus. Surgical removal of the tumor was performed. However, a testicular mass was found that showed rapid growth. He had undergone inguinal orchiectomy. Five days after the urological surgery, he noticed visual disturbances and bilateral visual loss. Ophthalmological examination revealed total blindness, and magnetic resonance imaging revealed sphenoid mass growth. The patient underwent emergent removal of the tumor, and a diagnosis of malignant lymphoma was made. A final diagnosis of mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) in th…

Blindness of intentions and metacognitive deficits during moral judgements in schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has shown that moral judgments are affected by social cognitive abilities, such as theory of mind (ToM). This study examines how information about an actor's beliefs and the consequences of their actions affect the moral evaluation of the character's behavior in social events. Our research builds upon previous studies, which have shown that these factors contribute differently to moral judgments made by both adults and young children. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to explore how participants with schizophrenia and healthy controls read stories about social situati

Wearables for persons with blindness and low vision: form factor matters.

Based on statistics from the WHO and the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness, an estimated 43.3 million people have blindness and 295 million have moderate and severe vision impairment globally as of 2020, statistics expected to increase to 61 million and 474 million respectively by 2050, staggering numbers. Blindness and low vision (BLV) stultify many activities of daily living, as sight is beneficial to most functional tasks. Assistive technologies for persons with blindness and low vision (pBLV) consist of a wide range of aids that work in some way to enhance one's function…

Bilateral gradual cortical blindness due to hemodynamic stroke: A case report.

Cortical blindness refers to the loss of vision caused by a lesion affecting the geniculate calcarine visual pathway. Bilateral occipital lobe infarctions in the vascular territory of the posterior cerebral arteries are the most common cause of cortical blindness. However, bilateral cortical blindness gradual is rarely reported. Gradual bilateral blindness usually occurs in lesions other than stroke, such as tumors. We report a case of a patient with gradual cortical blindness caused by a nonocclusive stroke caused by hemodynamic compromise. A 54-year-old man diagnosed with bilateral cerebral …

Top-down modulation of visual cortical processing after transient congenital blindness.

Early visual experience has been shown to be critical for the development of visual and multisensory functions; however, its impact on functional brain organization remains largely unexplored. Here, we therefore investigated the effect of early visual deprivation on top-down attentional modulation of visual cortical processing within the occipito-temporal cortex. Furthermore, we explored whether early visual deprivation may affect the extent to which typically visual, motion-selective area hMT responds to moving visual stimuli. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we compared cortical

Case Series: Avoidable Blindness after Inappropriate Ophthalmic Self-medication in Ghana.

SIGNIFICANCE: Inappropriate ophthalmic self-medication continues to plague Sub-Saharan Africa because of lack of public health education and inaccessibility to eye care services. This case series describes three cases of blindness (two monocular, one binocular) in Ghana, because of self-treatment of ocular conditions using improper drugs or homemade herbal mixtures. The article highlights the consequences of misinterpretation of symptoms and use of traditional home remedies, leading to delayed professional eye care and avoidable blindness. PURPOSE: This case series aims to report three separa…

Transient Cortical Blindness in a Toddler With Heterozygous Ornithine Transcarbamylase Deficiency.

Ornithine transcarbamylase (OTC) deficiency is an incredibly rare disease in the subgroup of urea cycle disorders. Although typically seen in the neonate shortly after initiating high protein feeds (human breastmilk or infant formula), patients with partial/heterozygous deficiencies can often be diagnosed later in life with unique sequelae. One such manifestation is sudden, transient vision loss shortly after an initial episode of hyperammonemia in a patient without a known diagnosis of OTC deficiency. Only two such occurrences are documented in academic literature and both share many similar

Clinical and Genetic Characteristics of Korean Congenital Stationary Night Blindness Patients.

In this study, we investigated the clinical and genetic characteristics of 19 Korean patients with congenital stationary night blindness (CSNB) at two tertiary hospitals. Clinical evaluations, including fundus photography, spectral-domain optical coherence tomography, and electroretinography, were performed. Genetic analyses were conducted using targeted panel sequencing or whole exome sequencing. The median age was 5 (3-21) years at the initial examination, 2 (1-8) years at symptom onset, and 11 (5-28) years during the final visit. Genetic mutations were identified as CNGB1 and GNAT1 for the …

Ophthalmology and SARS-CoV-2: Blind toward those who fight blindness?

SARS-CoV-2 infection recently reached pandemic proportions, with high risk of death for the worldwide population. In this dramatic scenario, all the resources are addressed to the intensive care units for the assessment of the emergency. However, more attention should be paid with respect to the risk of viral diffusion among asymptomatic people. Italy is the second most involved country in the world, and we needed to gain a lot of experience in a very limited time. At least 1 m of distance among people is recommended; however, some clinical practices cannot allow this distance. In this context

Markedly decreasing incidence of cause-specific blindness in Saxony (Eastern Germany).

PURPOSE: To analyze the recent time trend in Saxony. METHODS: Data were based on administrative files in Saxony (Eastern Germany) to assess recipients of blindness allowance newly registered between January 1, 2009, and December 31, 2017. We estimated age-sex standardized incidence of all-cause and cause-specific blindness and used Poisson regression to examine age- and sex-adjusted time trends. RESULTS: We identified 5114 new cases of blindness (63.3% female, 59.9% ≥ 80 years). We observed a markedly decrease in incidence of blindness: all-causes 2009: 15.7 per 100,000 person years [95% con…

Prevalence and causes of childhood blindness in India: A systematic review.

Childhood blindness is one of the priority targets of Vision 2020-Right To Sight due to its impact on the psychological and social growth of the child. An extensive search was performed to locate research papers on childhood blindness prevalence and its causes in the community based and blind schools, respectively, conducted from 1990 onward up to the present. Cross references were also manually searched along with expert consultation to enlarge the reference data. A total of five community-based studies on the prevalence including two refractive error studies conducted all over India in child…
