[Stress deformations of skeletal remains from prehistoric cremation burials].

Vertebrae and parts of joints from long bones from prehistoric cremations of the Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age are presented, showing m … ltered; alternatively, if cremation wood was piled on top of the corpse, the arches of thoracic and cervical vertebrae are also likely to be deformed. Deformations resulting from weight bearing were found in the joints of extremities only, with flattening of the heads of joints as well as fissures in the external layers of bones and compression into folds. Some bone …

Lower cranial nerve palsies due to Pseudomonas osteomyelitis of the skull base.

A patient with pseudomonas osteomyelitis of the base of the left posterior fossa is reported. His clinical course was one of progressive paresis of the left 8th, 10th, and 11th cranial nerves. There have been three prior reports of osteomyelitis of the base of the skull not in contiguity with an infected paranasal sinus. Our patient subsequently developed osteomyelitis in the 3rd to 5th cervical vertebrae.

Multiple skeletal familial abnormalities associated with balanced reciprocal translocation 2;8(q32;p13).

A father and three of his offspring had skeletal abnormalities consisting of a short forearm, cubitus valgus, fusion of first and second cervical vertebrae, and cleft of L5 and S1. All four had a reciprocal, apparently balanced, translocation 2;8(q32;p13). Normal sibs had normal chromosomes. We conclude that this may be a rare instance of an autosomal dominant condition associated with a balanced chromosome translocation.

New syndrome in three affected siblings.

A previously undescribed syndrome is reported. Major features include: (1) poorly mineralized calvarium, (2) dysmorphic facies (cleft lip and palate, micrognathia, upturned nares, apparent ocular hypertelorism), and (3) extracranial and musculoskeletal anomalies (absence of cervical vertebrae and clavicles, talipes equilnorvarus, and soft tissue syndactyly). Autosomal recessive inheritance is the most likely mode of transmission. Prenatal diagnosis via ultrasonography wa successful in two fetuses at risk.

Pseudo-Kümmel's disease: a unique application for vertebroplasty.

Compression fractures of the vertebrae are a major public health concern. There are approximately 700,000 compression fractures of the vertebrae diagnosed on an annual basis in the thoracolumbar spine. The etiology of senile osteoporosis is multifactorial with the most significant reason being age-related bone loss. Multiple effects of compression fractures include acute and chronic pain syndromes, inability to perform activities of daily living, insomnia and depression. Conventional treatment concepts relate to immobilization of the spine, medical pain control, bracing of the back and physica

On Farm Evaluation of a Novel Mechanical Cervical Dislocation Device for Poultry.

Urgent development of alternative on-farm killing methods for poultry is required following the number restrictions placed on the use of traditional manual cervical dislocation by European Legislation (EU 1099/2009). Alternatives must be proven to be humane and, crucially, practical in commercial settings with multiple users. We assessed the performance and reliability of a novel mechanical cervical dislocation device (NMCD) compared to the traditional manual cervical dislocation (MCD) method. NMCD was based on a novel device consisting of a thin supportive glove and two moveable metal finger

Evaluation of cervical posterior lateral mass screw placement by oblique radiographs.

STUDY DESIGN: The present study analyzed the two-dimensional representation of cervical lateral mass screws by oblique radiographs compared with cadaveric placement. This was accomplished by posterior and lateral cervical dissection of the lateral masses and intervertebral foramina, keeping the emerging nerve roots intact. The intervertebral foramina were divided into two zones for the study. OBJECTIVES: To identify and describe the value of oblique radiographs in evaluating posterior lateral mass screw placement in the cervical spine. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Posterior plate-screw fixati

Treatment of nontraumatic atlantoaxial dislocation and fibrous fusion. Case report.

The authors describe a case of nontraumatic atlantoaxial dislocation secondary to acute rheumatic fever, in which there appeared to be fibrous fusion between the axis and the atlas in the subluxed position. The dislocation was reduced by means of combined traction and steroid therapy. Fibrous fusion occurred in the realigned position after immobilization.

What is the C2 pedicle, pars interarticularis, and isthmus? Anatomical study and review of the literature regarding these confusing terms with proposal of new nomenclature.

INTRODUCTION: The atypical anatomy of the C2 vertebra has led to terminological discrepancies within reports and studies in the literature regarding the location of its pedicle, pars interarticularis, and isthmus. These discrepancies not only limit the power of morphometric analyses, but they also confuse technical reports regarding operations involving C2, and thus confuse our ability to properly communicate this anatomy. Herein, we examine the variations in nomenclature regarding the pedicle, pars interarticularis, and isthmus of C2, and via an anatomical study, propose new terminology. MET

Cervical spine injuries associated with lateral mass and facet joint fractures: new classification and surgical treatment with pedicle screw fixation.

To clarify the injury pattern, initial spinal instability, degree of discoligamentous injuries in cervical lateral mass and facet joint fractures, we retrospectively analyzed radiological parameters and introduced a new classification for these injuries. Surgical treatment was performed with cervical pedicle screw fixation (CPS), and overall neurological and radiological outcome was evaluated with a minimum follow-up period of 2 years. Lateral mass fractures were divided into the following four subtypes: separation, comminution, split, and traumatic spondylolysis. The sagittal and frontal alig

Clinical and pathologic correlations in traumatic spondylolisthesis of the axis.

Traumatic spondylolisthesis of the axis ("hangman's fracture") occurred in an 89-year-old man who died of unrelated causes. Postmortem examination of the cervical spine revealed a correlation between the anatomic lesion and clinical treatment and prognosis. Traumatic spondylolisthesis of the axis has a high potential for union because it usually occurs through the superior facet joint, in an area of well vascularized spongy cancellous bone. Fracture through the thin cortical bone of the pars interarticularis, conversely, is predisposed to the development of a nonunion and, hence, may explain t

An Unusual Case of Torticollis: Split Cord Malformation with Vertebral Fusion Anomaly: A Case Report and a Review of the Literature.

We describe the exceptional case of spinal cord malformation, associating neurenteric cyst, and cervical vertebral malformation, initially presenting as torticollis. A 4-month-old child presented with torticollis to the right since birth. A cervical spine X-ray revealed suspicious findings of fusion anomaly, and a cervical spine CT showed extensive segmentation-fusion anomaly with an anterior and posterior bony defect in the C1-6 vertebrae. A cervical spine MRI revealed extensive segmentation-fusion anomaly with an anterior bony defect, and the spinal cord split forward and backward at the C3

Morphological modularity in the vertebral column of Felidae (Mammalia, Carnivora).

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have demonstrated that the clear morphological differences among vertebrae across the presacral column are accompanied by heterogeneous functional signals in vertebral shape. Further, several lines of evidence suggest that the mammalian axial skeleton is a highly modular structure. These include its composition of serial units, a trade-off between high shape variance and strong conservation of vertebral count, and direct association of regions with anterior expression sites of Hox genes. Here we investigate the modular organisation of the presacral vertebral column

Gorham-Stout Disease with Multiple Bone Involvement-Challenging Diagnosis of a Rare Disease and Literature Review.

Gorham-Stout disease is a rare disorder, which may result in a poor prognosis. This disease, a rare lymphangiomatosis, is defined by progressive bone disappearance due to massive unicentric and multicentric osteolysis. Osteolytic lesions of the spine and pleura effusion are poor prognostic factors. Herein, we will present a case where the onset of disease occurred at the age of 18 with asthenia, myalgia, and major bone pain, followed by incomplete motor deficiency in the lower limbs and, later, in the upper limbs. Imaging studies (CT scan and MRI) of the patient revealed osteolytic lesions (ce

Catheter insertion depths in less-invasive surfactant administration.

INTRODUCTION: Less-invasive surfactant administration (LISA) under continuous positive airway pressure is increasingly used for the treatment of neonatal respiratory distress. Different procedures are described, but data on the optimal catheter insertion depth are sparse. OBJECTIVE: To generate data for recommending an optimal catheter insertion depth in LISA. METHODS: We examined 112 anterior-posterior chest X-rays from intubated infants and determined the carina's vertebral projection, whenever possible. After that, distances between the middle of cervical vertebra 4 (C4) and thoracic vert
