The Habitual Tendencies Questionnaire: A tool for psychometric individual differences research.

Habits are automatic responses to learned stimuli or contextual cues that are insensitive to goals. Although habits may allow for automated behaviours that increase efficiency in our daily lives, an over-reliance on habits has been suggested to contribute to disorders such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). There are currently few established measures of individual differences in habitual tendencies. To fill this gap, the present study generated and validated a novel 11-item scale, the Habitual Tendencies Questionnaire (HTQ), to measure individual differences in habitual tendencies in the

Comorbidity of personality disorders in anxiety disorders: a meta-analysis of 30 years of research.

BACKGROUND: A comprehensive meta-analysis to identify the proportions of comorbid personality disorders (PD) across the major subtypes of anxiety disorders (AD) has not previously been published. METHODS: A literature search identified 125 empirical papers from the period 1980-2010 on patients with panic disorders, social phobia, generalised anxiety, obsessive-compulsive (OCD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Several moderators were coded. RESULTS: The rate of any comorbid PD was high across all ADs, ranging from .35 for PTSD to .52 for OCD. Cluster C PDs occurred more than twice a

'Diagnostic terms are consequential'.

Patients find the term 'borderline personality disorder' offensive and, from a list of alternative labels, prefer 'emotional intensity disorder'. It is suggested that any term will take on a pejorative connotation if professional attitudes do not change as well; and that this requires an alteration in the environment in which professionals operate. This should not look so strongly to compulsion to prevent suicide, but should allow therapeutic relationships to flourish. Blaming clinicians for incidents when they have few choices is counterproductive. The problem reflects a systemic impatience w

Use of olanzapine in non-psychotic psychiatric disorders.

The history of antipsychotic medications begins in the 1950s with chlorpromazine, developed originally as an antihistamine but found to be an aid in the reduction of symptoms of delusions and hallucinations. This phenothiazine derivative was followed by numerous others in the same class (e.g., thioridazine) and then by antipsychotics in other classes (e.g., the popular haloperidol of the butyrophenone class). This group of medications is associated with a number of unpleasant side effects and complications. These included extrapyramidal symptoms (EPS), orthostatic hypotension, hyperprolactinem

Validity and reliability of the Japanese version of the kleptomania symptom assessment scale: A comparison between individuals with kleptomania and prisoners in Japan.

INTRODUCTION: In Japan, the rate of recidivism among thieves is high, some of which may be caused by kleptomania. The purpose of this study was to translate the Kleptomania Symptom Assessment Scale (K-SAS) into Japanese and validate its psychometric properties in a Japanese sample. A second purpose of the study was to evaluate the validity of K-SAS to discriminate between individuals with kleptomania and shoplifters not affected by the disorder. METHODS: The original K-SAS was translated by researchers. The back-translation of the scale into English was conducted by a professional translator

Citizenship and recovery: two intertwined concepts for civic-recovery.

BACKGROUND: Validation of the psychometric properties of a new measure of citizenship was required for a research project in the province of Quebec, Canada. This study was meant to study the interplay between recovery- and citizenship-oriented supportive employment. As recovery and citizenship were expected to be two related concepts, convergent validity between the Citizenship Measure (CM) and the Recovery Assessment Scale (RAS) was tested. METHODS: Study objectives were to: 1) conduct exploratory factor analyses on the CM and confirmatory factor analysis on the RAS tools (construct validity

Posttraumatic stress disorder: paradigm for new psychiatry.

Although the description of the PTSD clinical picture dates from history, our professional community has known for about two decades. PTSD is clearly defined in the 10th International Classification of Diseases, World Health Organization and IV Diagnostic Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Together with panic disorder, agoraphobia, specific and social phobias, obsessive-compulsive disorder and generalized anxiety disorder is one of the large groups of anxiety disorders. A superficial approach, we could conclude that in the relation with PTSD is all clear. It was also found that PTSD is of

Behavioral aspects of trichotillomania.

Trichotillomania is characterized by an inability to resist urges to pull out hair. It is estimated to occur in at least 1 out of 200 persons by college age. The disorder usually begins in childhood or adolescence with a chronic course more likely in patients with a later onset. Some investigators hypothesize a relationship between trichotillomania and obsessive compulsive disorder, but this proposal has not yet been substantiated. Little rigorous treatment research has been done, but the current treatments of choice are clomipramine and behavior therapy (habit reversal training).

Correlates of obsessive-compulsive and related disorders symptom severity during the COVID-19 pandemic.

We investigated changes in the severity of obsessive-compulsive and related disorders (OCRDs) symptoms as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. An Amazon Mechanical Turk sample of 829 individuals was evaluated with a series of instruments assessing the severity of the OCRDs before and during the pandemic. Additional questionnaires about sociodemographic factors, personal and family histories of OCRD, COVID-19 related events, compulsivity and impulsivity traits, schizotypal symptoms, and the severity of depression, anxiety and stress levels, were also used. Participants reported that OCD, hoarding

Aggressiveness, anger and eating disorders: a review.

Anger and aggressive behaviours, especially those self-directed, are frequent in subjects suffering from anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa. They increase the complexity of the clinical features, change the prognosis and cause a more difficult management of these disorders. In order to elucidate the complex relationships between eating disorders, anger and aggressiveness, the history of traumatic experiences, the prevalence of dissociative, obsessive, impulsive and compulsive symptoms, as well as the role of severe personality disorders in subjects suffering from anorexia nervosa, bulimia ne

Two different types of obsession: autogenous obsessions and reactive obsessions.

We propose that obsessions are categorized into two subtypes, i.e. autogenous obsessions and reactive obsessions, which are different in terms of identifiability of their evoking stimuli, subjective experiences, contents, and subsequent cognitive processes. Autogenous obsessions tend to come abruptly into consciousness without identifiable evoking stimuli, which are perceived as ego-dystonic and aversive enough to be repelled, and include sexual, aggressive, and immoral thoughts or impulses. On the other hand, reactive obsessions are evoked by identifiable external stimuli, which are perceived

Personality and eating disorders: a decade in review.

Personality traits have been implicated in the onset, symptomatic expression, and maintenance of eating disorders (EDs). The present article reviews literature examining the link between personality and EDs published within the past decade, and presents a meta-analysis evaluating the prevalence of personality disorders (PDs) in anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), and binge eating disorder (BED) as assessed by self-report instruments versus diagnostic interviews. AN and BN are both consistently characterized by perfectionism, obsessive-compulsiveness, neuroticism, negative emotionality

[Inbreeding and serious mental illness in the first Spanish Bourbons].

INTRODUCTION: There is an argument about inbreeding as a risk factor in the development of major mental illnesses like bipolar disorder or schizophrenia. The genealogical trees of European royal dynasties represent an opportunity to study this relationship. Felipe V was the first Bourbon king to rule in Spain, who was thought to have possibly suffered a severe mental disorder. Felipe's son Fernando VI, also had a mental disease. Nevertheless Carlos III, Felipe V's son born from a different, unrelated mother, apparently showed no trace of such disorder. We hypothesize that consanguinity or inbr

Psychiatric comorbidities in patients with major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Psychiatric comorbidities are common in major depressive disorder (MDD). They may worsen outcome and cause economic burden. The primary objective was to examine the prevalence of psychiatric comorbidities in MDD. The secondary objectives were to compare the presence of comorbidities between currently active and past MDD, and between patients with and without suicidal risk. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study. A total of 250 patients with lifetime MDD and age ≥18 years were enrolled. The Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI), Thai version, was used to confirm M

Network analysis of the genetic relationships between twenty psychiatric and substance use disorders.

We sought to clarify, using network analysis, the structure of genetic risk factors for a wide range of psychiatric and substance use disorders. Using split halves (N=1,510,974), we computed the family genetic risk scores (FGRSs) for 20 psychiatric and substance use disorders assessed in treated individuals from the entire Swedish population born between 1960 and 2000. We calculated a genetic correlation matrix for them to which we applied an EBICglasso network analysis. The network was dense, with five inter-connected clusters of genetic risks for internalizing, externalizing, neurodevelopmen

Meningioma and psychiatric symptoms: An individual patient data analysis.

Meningioma is a slow-growing benign tumor arising from meninges and is usually asymptomatic. Though neuropsychiatric symptoms are common in patients with brain tumors, they often can be the only manifestation in cases of meningioma. Meningiomas might present with mood symptoms, psychosis, memory disturbances, personality changes, anxiety, or anorexia nervosa. The diagnosis of meningioma could be delayed where only psychiatric symptoms are seen. A comprehensive review of the literature and individual patient data analysis was conducted, which included all case reports, and case series on mening

Intolerance of uncertainty predicts increased striatal volume.

Oversensitivity to uncertain future threat is usefully conceptualized as intolerance of uncertainty (IU). Neuroimaging studies of IU to date have largely focused on its relationship with brain function, but few studies have documented the association between IU and the quantitative properties of brain structure. Here, we examined potential gray and white-matter brain structural correlates of IU from 61 healthy participants. Voxel-based morphometric analysis highlighted a robust positive correlation between IU and striatal volume, particularly the putamen. Conversely, tract-based spatial statis
