Diencephalic epilepsy in a patient with agenesis of the corpus callosum confirmed by computerised axial tomography.

A case of diencephalic epilepsy is described in whom stereotyped attacks of spontaneous hypothermia and diaphoresis occurred over a 20 year period. No abnormality of the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal axis was found, and there was no evidence of an intracranial mass lesion. Pneumoencephalography and computerised axial tomography (EMI scan) demonstrated agenesis of the corpus callosum.

[The value of somesthetic homolateral evoked potentials in agenesis of the corpus callosum (author's transl)].

The authors describe the homolateral somesthetic evoked responses in 8 cases of agenesis of the corpus callosum. They stress the differences compared to normals in the same way that contralateral somesthetic evoked responses differ. The authors consider the possibility of an independent cortical generator responsible for this response and suggest that systematic recording of somesthetic homolateral evoked potentials might be of considerable value in early diagnosis of agenesis of the corpus callosum.

Cytotoxic Lesions of the Corpus Callosum Patterns and Etiologies: Insights from an Indian Cohort.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The corpus callosum (CC) is the largest commissural pathway in the brain. The splenium of corpus callosum (SCC) represents the thickest and most posterior portion of the CC. Transient signal alterations in the SCC on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have been observed in various neurological and non-neurological conditions, termed cytotoxic lesions of the corpus callosum (CLOCCs). We aim to study the different MRI brain patterns in patients with CLOCCs and correlate probable etiologies with clinical and radiological presentations. METHODS: During the study period of…

How should antenatal counseling be given to parents in the fetal corpus callosum agenesis?

BACKGROUND: We aimed to review the corpus callosum agenesis (CCA) cases diagnosed and managed in our University to contribute to the literature about this antenatally diagnosed fetal cranial anomaly by revealing the antenatal and postnatal outcomes of CCA. METHODS: This retrospective and cross-sectional study examined CCA detected in our clinic between 2012 and 2021. Genetic results, accompanying additional anomalies, termination, and perinatal mortality rates were also calculated. Neurodevelopmental outcomes were revealed by investigating motor development, cognitive development, behavioral …

Cytotoxic lesion of the corpus callosum (CLOCC) associated with typhoid fever: A case report.

Cytotoxic lesions of the corpus callosum (CLOCCs) are rare but significant abnormalities characterized by transient lesions in the splenium of the corpus callosum, often reversible after the treatment of the underlying condition. These lesions, first described in 1990, are associated with various aetiologies, including infections, metabolic disorders, and trauma. In this context, we report the case of a 44-year-old man with typhoid fever and neurological manifestations, in whom cerebral imaging revealed a cytotoxic lesion of the corpus callosum, thus highlighting this rare pathology.

Cytotoxic Lesions of the Corpus Callosum (CLOCCs) Related to Hypoglycemia: Clinical Insights and Pathogenesis.

We describe the case of an 88-year-old man with cytotoxic lesions of the corpus callosum (CLOCCs) related to hypoglycemia. The patient developed a disturbance of consciousness following excessive alcohol consumption and anorexia. In the emergency room, his blood sugar level was 9 mg/dL, and he was immediately treated with a rapid infusion of glucose. Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed hyperintensity in the corpus callosum and bilateral deep white matter on diffusion-weighted imaging, along with decreased apparent diffusion coefficient values. The following day, these findings were…

Interhemispheric coherence of EEG rhythms in children: Maturation and differentiation in corpus callosum dysgenesis.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the evolution of interhemispheric coherences (ICo) in background and spindle frequency bands during childhood and use it to identify individuals with corpus callosum dysgenesis (CCd). METHODS: A monocentric cohort of children aged from 0.25 to 15 years old, consisting of 13 children with CCd and 164 without, was analyzed. The ICo of background activity (ICOBckgrdA), sleep spindles (ICOspindles), and their sum (sICO) were calculated. The impact of age, gender, and CC status on the ICo was evaluated, and the sICO was used to discriminate children with or without CCd. RE…

Unravelling the Clinical Co-Morbidity and Risk Factors Associated with Agenesis of the Corpus Callosum.

Agenesis of the Corpus Callosum (ACC) can result in multiple neurological deficits including social and behavioural issues. However, the underlying aetiology, clinical co-morbidity and the contributing risk factors remain elusive, resulting in inaccurate prognosis and delayed therapy. The main objective of this study was to comprehensively describe the epidemiology and clinical co-morbidity associated with patients diagnosed with ACC. The secondary objective was to identify the factors that contribute towards increased risk for ACC. For this, we analysed 22 years (1998-2020) of clinical data a…

Altered corpus callosum structure in adolescents with cerebral palsy: connection to gait and balance.

Cerebral palsy (CP) is the most common motor disorder in childhood. Recent studies in children with CP have associated weakened sensorimotor performance with impairments in the major brain white-matter (WM) structure, corpus callosum (CC). However, the relationship between CC structure and lower extremity performance, specifically gait and balance, remains unknown. This study investigated the transcallosal WM structure and lower limb motor stability performance in adolescents aged 10-18 years with spastic hemiplegic (n = 18) or diplegic (n = 13) CP and in their age-matched controls (n = 34). T…

Clinical Features of Cytotoxic Lesions of the Corpus Callosum Associated with Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Patients with SAH due to a ruptured intracranial aneurysm occasionally show reversible high-signal lesions in the splenium of the corpus callosum on DWI. These lesions are called cytotoxic lesions of the corpus callosum. This study retrospectively reviewed cases of aneurysmal SAH and investigated clinical features of cytotoxic lesions of the corpus callosum associated with SAH. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Participants comprised 259 patients with aneurysmal SAH who had undergone curative treatment at our hospital. We examined the following items related to cytotoxic lesions …

Incidence and patterns of abnormal corpus callosum in fetuses with isolated spina bifida aperta.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the incidence and characterise corpus callosum (CC) abnormalities in fetuses with spina bifida aperta (SBA) between 18 and 26 weeks of gestation. METHODS: This was a retrospective study on fetuses with isolated SBA and who were assessed for fetal surgery. Digitally stored ultrasound images of the brain were reviewed for the presence/absence of the CC, and the length and diameter of its constituent parts (rostrum, genu, body and splenium). We used regression analysis to determine the relationship between CC abnormalities and gestational age, head circumference, ventricl…

The Prenatal Morphomechanic Impact of Agenesis of the Corpus Callosum on Human Brain Structure and Asymmetry.

Genetic, molecular, and physical forces together impact brain morphogenesis. The early impact of deficient midline crossing in agenesis of the Corpus Callosum (ACC) on prenatal human brain development and architecture is widely unknown. Here we analyze the changes of brain structure in 46 fetuses with ACC in vivo to identify their deviations from normal development. Cases of complete ACC show an increase in the thickness of the cerebral wall in the frontomedial regions and a reduction in the temporal, insular, medial occipital and lateral parietal regions, already present at midgestation. ACC …
