OBJECTIVE: Differentiating odontogenic keratocysts and ameloblastomas from other cystic lesions in the maxillomandibular region is important because of their high recurrence rates. Conventional radiography, CT, and fine-needle aspiration biopsy are limited for differential diagnosis. The purpose of this study was to review the MR findings in patients with odontogenic keratocysts, ameloblastomas, and other maxillomandibular cysts to determine the value of MR imaging in the differential diagnosis of these lesions.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: MR images were obtained in 38 patients with 43 cystic lesio

A 50-year-old male presented with acutely progressed paraplegia. His magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated two well-demarcated components with opposite signals in one cystic lesion between the T1- and T2-weighted images at the T1 spine level. The patient showed immediately improved neurological symptoms after surgical intervention and the histopathological exam was compatible with a neurenteric cyst. On operation, two different viscous drainages from the cyst were confirmed. A unique similarity of image findings was found from a review of the pertinent literature. The common findings of spin

Tornwaldt's cyst is a benign cyst located in the upper posterior nasopharynx. It is a relatively rare lesion and most are small and asymptomatic whereas some cause nasal obstruction, postnasal drip, occipital headache or eustachian tube dysfunction. In our case a 28- year-old man presented with nasal obstruction since 10-years whose diagnostic nasal endoscopy showed a large well-encapsulated lesion arising from the posterior wall of the nasopharynx. A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed which was suggestive of a fluid filled cystic lesion. The patient underwent successful marsupiali

Choledochal cysts are rare congenital malformations of the biliary tract. Though most cysts are diagnosed incidentally, some present directly with complications. We report on the case of an 11-month-old girl admitted for abdominal pain, fever and vomiting. Ultrasonography revealed intraabdominal fluid and the absence of a choledochal cyst diagnosed 2 months earlier. Laparotomy for suspected rupture of a choledochal cyst was planned and a choledochojejunostomy with Roux-en-Y was performed. Spontaneous rupture of a choledochal cyst is rare and occurs most frequently in children under the age of

Laparoscopic splenectomy currently is a safe procedure and offers better cosmetic results, less pain, and a shorter hospital stay than the traditional open procedure. However, there have been only a few reports of laparoscopic removal of giant splenic cysts. An 18-year-old woman was admitted with abdominal fullness. CT scans and MRI images of the upper abdomen revealed a cystic mass having a diameter of 19 cm. Preoperative diagnosis was a large splenic cyst, and laparoscopic splenectomy with intraoperative cyst drainage (amount of drained fluid: 3,000 mL) was performed. Histologically, almost

Nine cats, from 11 to 17 years of age (mean 13.6 years of age), were diagnosed with a cranial mediastinal cyst. Thoracic radiographs in all cats were characterized by an increased soft tissue opacity in the cranial mediastinum confirmed to be a cyst by ultrasonography or necropsy. Ultrasonographically cysts appeared as an anechoic mass. A low-cellularity clear fluid was obtained on aspiration. The majority of the cats (n = 8) presented for unrelated conditions with no signs of respiratory distress. No treatment for the cyst was pursued except for drainage during ultrasonographic-guided aspirat

RationalePerineural cysts in the spinal canal are usually asymptomatic. However, symptoms can occur when the cyst becomes large enough to compress a nerve root. There are still no established treatment options for this disease. In this report, we describe a case of successful decompression of the large symptomatic perineural cyst using epiduroscope.Patient concernsA 42-year-old male patient visited our pain center complaining of discomfort and pain in his right posterior thigh. Magnetic resonance imaging of the patient showed a large perineural cyst (53 × 31 × 21 mm) compressing the right S1 n

RATIONALE: Simple liver cysts are common, and usually benign and asymptomatic, requiring little to no treatment. Liver cysts with biliary communication, however, are rare and require effective treatment to avoid recurrence.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 70-year-old woman with breast cancer visited our hospital for treatment. Physical examination revealed abdominal distension and bilateral lower leg edema.
DIAGNOSIS: Abdominal contrast-enhanced computed tomography revealed a giant liver cyst, inducing inferior vena cava compression that was causing her edema.
INTERVENTIONS: Percutaneous transhepatic c

We hypothesized that highly variable cyst fluid sodium concentrations are a characteristic of every kidney in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). We added our data on sodium concentrations in 124 fluids from ten ADPKD kidneys to data published by others of concentrations in 32 fluids from five kidneys. The values ranged from 3 to 207 mEq/liter; none fell between 59 and 74 mEq/liter. Fluids were designated as low (< 60 mEq/liter; 50 fluids) or high (> 60 mEq/liter; 106 fluids) sodium fluids. Transmission electron microscopy identified differences in the depths of apical tight …

Aneurysmal bone cyst of the calcaneus is an uncommon entity. Radiographs showed a large lytic expanding lesion arising in the calcaneus with cortical disruption inferiorly. CT of the patient with this condition showed fluid-fluid levels that were the result of blood layering. These findings may suggest the specific diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Pseudomeningocele is the term used to describe fluid accumulation due to the leakage of cerebrospinal fluid into the surrounding soft tissue. It may cause complications such as cosmetic deformities, chronic meningitis, and/or impingement on vital structures resulting in neurological deficits; nevertheless, life-threatening posterior fossa cyst formation is a rare event.
CASE DESCRIPTION: We report a case of posterior fossa cyst formation induced by pseudomeningocele with brain stem compression leading to coma with pupillary dilation. These symptoms occurred after an operation for

A case of congenital lacrimal cyst or dacryops of the lacrimal gland in an 8-month-old Neapolitan Mastiff dog is reported. The dog presented with a swelling dorsolateral to the left globe, which had been present since birth. In addition, hyperplasia and prolapse of the superficial gland of the left nictitating membrane, and bilateral macropalpebral fissure and 'diamond eye' conformation were apparent. On manual eversion of the upper eyelid, a subconjunctival mass was visible that was translucent and pink and affected the upper conjunctival fornix. B-mode ultrasonography revealed the presence o

Hydatid disease is a parasitic infection caused by Echinococcus granulosus characterised by cyst formation in any organ, although the liver is the most commonly involved. Hydatid cysts can rupture either spontaneously or following trauma. Surgical treatment can be life-saving. This paper reports the atypical presentation of a young girl admitted to the emergency department. She presented with pain on her palms due to falling down a few steps. Because of the rebound tenderness on the right upper quadrant of her abdomen on physical examination, bedside ultrasonography was performed to identify t

When intestinal obstruction presents with fluid-filled bowel loops instead of air-distended loops, subtle elongated masses representing these bowel loops may be missed on plain abdominal radiographs. In these cases, ultrasound will show sausage-shaped, cystic structures, with uneven margins representing mucosal folds, distributed throughout the abdomen and sometimes accompanied by peristalsis. These features differentiate fluid-filled bowel loops from other cystic structures in the abdomen and help make a diagnosis of bowel obstruction.

We hypothesized that solid tumors rarely occur in patients with hydatid disease. We obtained the serum of 14 patients diagnosed with hydatid disease, the serum of 10 patients who did not have a history of hydatid disease, and the hydatid cyst fluid from six patients. These sera and fluid samples were added at different concentrations to NCI-H209/An1 human lung small cell carcinoma cells and L929 mouse fibroblasts as a control group. Sera of patients with hydatid diseases had cytotoxic effects on NCI-H209/An1 cells, but they did not have cytotoxic effects on fibroblast cells. Sera from healthy …

BACKGROUND: Recurrence after percutaneous ethanol ablation (PEA) of benign hepatic and renal cysts has been common, resulting in re-treatment or additional surgery. However, in recent years, a few cases of spontaneous regression of recurrent cysts following PEA have been experienced, which led to the design of this study to evaluate cyst recurrence after PEA and the necessity of additional treatment.
PURPOSE: To evaluate whether the initial recurrence after PEA of benign hepatic, renal, and splenic cysts is true recurrence, and to decide whether additional treatment is needed.

BACKGROUND: The aim of parapelvic cyst treatment is to have complete drainage of cyst fluid and prevent its further compression of the kidney and collective system. This study explores the efficacy and safety of surgical approaches with holmium laser ureteroscopic internal drainage in the treatment of parapelvic cyst.
METHODS: The compression effect of parapelvic cyst on the renal collective system was observed by rigid ureteroscope using retrograde ureteroscopic technology. With direct vision, the cyst wall on the obvious parapelvic compression site was cut. The diameter of the cyst wall cut…

Mesenteric cysts are uncommon abdominal masses in children. They occur most frequently in the small bowel mesentery and often contain chylous fluid. These cysts may be multilocular, grow to huge proportions and are believed to be caused by obstructed, malformed, ectopic lymphatic tissue. The patients' clinical presentations is dependent on cyst size, location and related complications such as partial or complete bowel obstruction, perforation, peritonitis, volvulus and malignant degeneration. Surgical resection is the treatment of choice. Ultrasound and CT are the most valuable modalities for

Past efforts to pharmacologically disrupt the development and growth of renal cystic lesions focused primarily on normalizing the activity of a specific signaling molecule, but the effects of stimulating apoptosis in the proliferating epithelial cells have not been well studied. Although benign, ADPKD renal cysts created by the sustained proliferation of epithelial cells resemble tumors, and malignant cell death can be achieved by cotreatment with TNF-α and a mimetic of second mitochondria-derived activator of caspase (Smac). Notably, TNF-α accumulates to high levels in ADPKD cyst fluid. Here,…

The clinical, radiographic findings in 12 patients with symptomatic Rathke cleft cysts (RCC) are presented. The mean age of these patients was 52 years, and 9 of the patients were female. Visual disturbance was the most common symptom, followed by headache. Magnetic resonance images (MRIs) were reviewed in 11 cases. In two cases, the cyst fluid had low signal intensity on T1-weighted images and high intensity on T2-weighted images. In eight cases the cyst fluid had iso-to-high intensity on both T1 and T2-weighted images. On dynamic MRI study using Gd-DTPA, normal anterior pituitary gland was s…
