Auditory and vestibular mouse mutants: models for human deafness.

We have shown here several examples of how hearing and vestibular impaired mouse mutants are generated and the insight that they provide in … variety of age-related and noise-induced hearing loss that varies between normal hearing and severe deafness throughout their life span /27/. Genetic diversity between inbred mouse strains has been shown to be a powerful tool for the discovery of modifier genes. Already two studies have found regions in which modifier genes for deafness may reside /28-29/. …

Sudden total bilateral deafness due to asymptomatic mumps infection.

Mumps is the most common cause of unilateral acquired sensorineural hearing loss in children. Although it usually affects the salivary glands. the inner ear may be involved. Deafness is usually unilateral, sudden in onset, profound and permanent. Bilateral total sensorineural hearing loss had been rarely reported in English literature. We present a case of total deafness due to asymptomatic mumps infection.

[Mass screening of deafness in neonates using otoacoustic emissions].

There is no clinical sign of hearing loss in the infant. Defective language acquisition and altered voice quality always occur late making early diagnosis essential for therapeutic management of deaf children. Subjective assessment of behavioral is highly dependent on the experience of the examinator and cannot be used as an effective routine method. Electrophysiological recordings of otoacoustic emissions have the advantage of allowing objective measurement. Otoacoustic emissions originate in the inner ear. A quantity of energy is transmitted via the tympanic membrane which acts as a micropho

[Sudden deafness disclosing acoustic neuroma. Apropos of 16 cases].

We performed a retrospective review of the audiologic, radiologic and clinical data on 239 patients operated on for acoustic neuroma from 1987 to 1995 at Beaujon Hospital. In 16 patients or 6.6% of the total group, we identified as having experienced sudden hearing loss by history. The 16 tumors involved were 1 stade I; 8 stade II, 5 stade III and 2 stade IV. In 14 cases, the tumor was removed by translabyrinthine approach, 1 case by masto-retrosigmoid approach and 1 case by middle fossa approach. The hearing was preserved in the two latter cases. The purpose of this study is to illustrate and

Deafness and cholesteatoma complicating fracture of the mandibular condyle.

A case of posterior fracture-dislocation of the mandibular condyle which resulted in conductive deafness and cholesteatoma is presented. Initial management by condylectomy improved auditory canal patency but failed to prevent the development of cholesteatoma, necessitating mastoid surgery. Although major complications following fractures of the condyle are not common the need to consider the possibility of damage to the ear in such fractures is emphasised.

Abrupt unilateral deafness modifies function of human auditory pathways.

We studied nine patients with unilateral abrupt deafness caused by acoustic neuroma surgery. Cortical responses to tones delivered to the intact ear were recorded postoperatively with a 122-channel whole-scalp neuromagnetometer. In three patients, followed for 12 months with 2-4 measurements, evoked responses originating in the auditory cortices were weak and delayed one month after the operation in both hemispheres. During the follow-up, the amplitudes reached the control level. No response abnormalities were found in patients who were studied 1.5-4.5 years after the operation. Our findings s…

Stargazer (stg), new deafness mutant in the Zucker rat.

We describe a new deafness mutant found in the Zucker rat. The mutant phenotype appears to be caused by an autosomal recessive gene, tentatively named stargazer, gene symbol stg. The phenotype is characterized by stargazing, head tossing, drawing back, circling, and hyperactivity, all of which are apparent by the third week of life. Although the affected animals sire or bear normal-sized litters, mortality is high for litters of affected dams, apparently due to trampling or neglect by the hyperactive dams. Affected animals are unable to swim and, when lifted by the tail, they are likely to cur…

[A case of cortical deafness with bilateral putaminal hemorrhage].

A 56 years old right-handed female, a housewife, had suffered from right putaminal hemorrhage which had been treated surgically in July, 198 … atively. Although her hearing loss had been gradually improving for 1 month, she suffered from word deafness, an inability to comprehend speech, for the following 2 months. Clinical features, CT findings as well as results of ABR suggest that hearing loss observed in this case, cortical deafness, was presumably due to bilateral damage of acoustic radiation …

[Familial deafness showing hearing pattern of low-tone losses].

Clinical and electrocochleographic studies of low tone familial deafness were carried out in 19 patients of 10 families. These hearing impairments were characterized by an upward-sloping pure tone audiogram with 50dB to 60dB hearing threshold below 2000Hz and with normal or near-normal hearing threshold above this frequency. The type of inheritance in these families showed autosomal dominant mode and no associated malformation. In 7 patients, hearing tests were repeated, it was observed that hearing threshold was not elevated. The short increment sensitivity index (SISI) tests were positive su…

[What can the additional diagnosis contribute in sudden deafness?].

100 patients suffering from sudden hearing loss were examined with regard to cardiovascular risk factors and compared with a control group without ear diseases. Hypercholesterinaemia and hypertriglyceridaemia were significantly more often seen in patients with sudden hearing loss. No accumulation of pathological findings in neurological, orthopaedic or ophthalmological examinations was observed in patients with sudden hearing loss.

[Bilateral simultaneous sudden deafness--a report of five cases].

Five cases of bilateral simultaneous sudden deafness were reported. Two patients were male and three patients were female. The age of the patients ranged from five to 54 years. All the five cases were profoundly deaf on both sides. The elevation of the mumps virus antibody titer was found in the three cases out of four in those examined. The recovery pattern of hearing was seen symmetrically on both sides in four cases. Although complete recovery of hearing was obtained in one case and remarkable improvement was observed in two cases bilaterally, no improvement was seen in one case on either s…

The Rinne test for conductive deafness. A critical reappraisal.

The Rinne tuning fork test for the detection of conductive hearing loss is the most widely used tuning fork test in clinical medicine. However, the frequency of the tuning fork used to perform the test has not been standardized. In a study of 200 patients with known air-bone gaps, we found that the 256-Hz tuning fork was more sensitive than the 512-, 1024-, and 2048-Hz tuning forks for discriminating conductive from sensorineural hearing deficits. However, the occurrence of false-positive responses limits its usefulness. Therefore, we believe that the 512-Hz tuning fork should become the stand

[Screening tympanometry in detection of conductive deafness in children].

Tympanometric examination of the air pressure in the middle ear and of the mobility of the tympano-ossicular system was carried out on 82 ot … ion tympanometry is a very advantageous method in early detection of diseases of the middle ear and deafness in children, especially of the forms with poor symptomatology and evolutive processes. The authors plead for the routine use of screening tympanometry in otologic practice, which should prevent conductive deafness in children and improve both therap …

[Atypical erythrokeratodermia with deafness, keratitis and double mycotic infection].

We report on a male patient suffering from a congenital ichthyosiform dermatosis, whose family history offered no clue to the diagnosis. The skin lesions were mainly localized on the trunk, hands, elbows, and knees. During the last few years, the cutaneous lesions had slowly changed for the worse and the following additional symptoms had developed: keratitis, deafness, diffuse alopecia, dysarthria, and ataxic abasia. According to the clinical features, we established the diagnosis of KID syndrome (keratitis, ichthyosis, deafness). Although the skin lesions of our patient clinically and histolo…

Surgery for congenital conductive deafness in Klippel-Feil syndrome.

A wide variety of anomalies of the middle and inner ear has been reported in association with congenital deafness in Klippel-Feil syndrome. Findings of six new exploratory tympanotomies are added to a review of 14 previously reported; for this entire group, better hearing was achieved in eight ears. When the only anomaly is a disconnection of the incudostapedial joint, good results can be expected from reconstruction of the ossicular chain. With the addition of the six newly reported stapedectomies, the success rate for this procedure now equals 50%. None of the fenestrations of the promontory…

Incidence and prognosis of acute profound deafness in Japan.

The Acute Profound Deafness Investigation and Research Group of the Japanese Ministry of Health and Welfare conducted nation-wide studies on idiopathic sudden deafness, mumps deafness, and deafness accompanied by perilymphatic leak. In the epidemiological study, data were accumulated from 11 institutions on the incidence and prognosis of patients with idiopathic sudden deafness, especially involving total deafness or near-total deafness; mumps deafness; and deafness accompanied by perilymphatic leak. Out of 1,331 patients with sudden deafness, total deafness was found in 8.6% of the patients, …

[Acute unilateral deafness caused by mumps--a case description].

Reports of the aetiology of mumps induced deafness in the auditory pathway have not appeared in the literature in recent years. It is now possible to distinguish between sensory deafness and other types of profound hearing loss by combining the results of promontory testing (PT) and electrocochleography (ECochG). A very extensive examination of a case of profound sudden hearing loss due to mumps is described. It was impossible to prove a relation between the mumps virus and sudden hearing loss in this case but the site of the lesion in the auditory pathway could be localised. The hearing loss …
