It has been stated that general anesthesia is a risk factor for postcesarean infectious morbidity. A retrospective review of 252 women who had undergone primary cesarean section at the University of Iowa Hospital was conducted. Regional anesthesia was successfully administered to 170 patients, and general anesthesia was administered to 82 patients. In an effort to define the impairment in hips affected by Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease, we attempted to contact 112 patients whose disease had been diagnosed between 1920 and 1940. Over a 10-month period, 24 cases of Legionnaires' disease pneumonia occurred among patients admitted to an Iowa hospital, most of whom were immunosuppressed. Eleven patients died. Twenty-one patients were admitted to a recently completed hospital addition, 16 of these to a new hematology-oncology unit. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health evaluated farm pesticide exposure and glioma risk in a study that included 457 glioma cases and 648 population-based controls, all adult men (18-80 yr old) and nonmetropolitan residents of Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. INTRODUCTION: Iowa has the highest incidence of oropharyngeal cancer (OPC) in the US, and human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common cause of that disease. An HPV vaccine is approved for OPC prevention, but its uptake is low. We identified dental offices as novel settings in which the HPV vaccine can be recommended to patients, and we describe our use of the Intervention Mapping (IM) framework to develop an intervention that prepares dental providers to recommend the vaccine to parents of patients aged 9-17.
