[Untreated homocystinuria in adulthood].

HISTORY: Pronounced osteoporosis was discovered in a 44-year-old man presenting with an herniated intervertebral disk. He reported severe myopia, incomplete dislocation of the lenses and retinal detachment. He did not know of any thrombembolic events in the past. On physical examination Marfan-like appearance and a funnel chest were noted. Because of these findings Marfan syndrome was suspected. INVESTIGATIONS: Considering the findings of the x-rays, homocystinuria was suspected as a cause of osteoporosis, despite apparently normal cognitive functions. This diagnosis was confirmed by greatly

Late-onset bilateral lens dislocation and glaucoma associated with a novel mutation in FBN1.

PURPOSE: To describe the clinical and genetic findings in one Chinese family with late-onset bilateral lens dislocation and secondary glaucoma. METHODS: One family including three affected members and 16 unaffected family members was examined clinically. After informed consent was obtained, genomic DNA was extracted from venous blood of all participants. Linkage analysis was performed with two microsatellite markers around the fibrillin-1 (FBN1) gene (D15S992 and D15S126). Mutation screening was performed using direct DNA sequence analysis and single strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP).

Positive dysphotopsia after intrascleral intraocular lens fixation: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Positive dysphotopsia is a symptom caused by the reflection of incident light through the pupil at the inner surface of the intraocular lens (IOL) edge after cataract surgery and is perceived as an abnormal arcuate or radiating photopic image at night or indoors with a light source. Although positive dysphotopsia is one of the most important symptoms that affect patients after cataract surgery, it is still not well known even among ophthalmologists. Positive dysphotopsia as the cause of patient complaint following intraocular surgery other than cataract surgery has not been identif

[Pre-equatorial contusion syndrome. Analysis apropos of 59 cases].

The term "pre-equatorial syndrome" covers post-traumatic involvement of the anterior segment and of the pre-equatorial retina, due to a frontal distension mechanism. In a retrospective study, we studied 582 cases of ocular contusions from 1973 to 1986 in patients who required a brief hospitalisation in our clinic because of the severity of the initial injury. The aim of the study was to assess the occurrence of this syndrome, its clinical features and evolution. 59 complete pre-equatorial syndromes were found in this sample (10.2% of all the ocular contusions). The follow up ranged from one to
