We describe a case with unilateral chorea associated with thyrotoxicosis. A 23-year-old female with no family history of neurological diseases acutely developed choreic movements of the left extremities during gross thyrotoxicosis. CT scan and MRI study demonstrated no abnormality. Single-photon emission CT with technetium Tc 99m-labeled hexamethylpropyleneamine oxime revealed normal cerebral perfusion. Although the choreic movements were partially improved by dopamine antagonist, they persisted for two months until successful treatment of the thyrotoxicosis finally abolished these movements.

One hundred and- eighteen newly diagnosed patients with Graves' disease were treated by tapazole for 6 months (short-term course) and followed up for another 12 months. Forty three percent remission rate was found in this group. A regular course of antithyroid drug therapy for 1.5-2 years with 50% remission rate was taken as control. The authors analysed the results of therapy with plasmapheresis of 46 patients with diffuse toxic goiter showing intolerance to antithyroid therapy for the purpose of preoperative preparation. A therapeutic effect was achieved in 45 patients. Plasmapheresis resulted in the reduction of a period of preoperative preparation, the concentration of T4 and JgG, IgA and IgM decreased and the TTH level increased.
