Rats were given a single high dose of fluoride at the age of 5 days and killed after 24 h, 10 or 15 days. The maxillary first molars were prepared for scanning electron microscopic examination. It was concluded that a single dose of fluoride, preferentially affecting ameloblasts with a high secretory activity, leads to the formation of subameloblastic cysts and enamel hypoplasias covered with granular deposits.

Biopsy specimens of jejunal mucosa from children with coeliac disease (CD) were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and light microscopy (LM) before and after gluten-free diet. The results demonstrate that SEM is more sensitive than LM in documenting early morphological restoration of jejunal mucosa in patients treated with gluten-free diet.

Thin sections of supragingival calculus from lower anterior teeth of 26 subjects were examined. From each specimen, an average of 10 spectra was collected from a densely-mineralized area less than 100 micron diameter. Only spectra showing peaks for minor elements or unusual Ca:P peak ratios were collected, stored and analysed semi-quantitatively. Ca:P weight percentage ratios varied within each specimen. The eyes, kidneys and pancreas of mice (SJL/J) infected with encephalomyocarditis virus were examined by light and electron microscopy. A stereological electron microscopical technique was applied to biopsies of oral ulcers from patients with Behçet's syndrome in order to carry out a quantitative analysis of the cellular infiltrate. An extensive outbreak of acute gastroenteritis of unknown etiology occurred at Snow Mountain, Colorado, in December 1976. Virus-like particles, 27 nm in diameter, were observed by electron microscopy in two of five stool specimens from individuals in the outbreak. The electron-microscopic and light-microscopic findings on jejunal biopsies from a case of Whipple's disease are described. Seven biopsies were obtained over a 3-year period. In estrogen-induced cryptorchidism in mice, differentiation of the epididymis is arrested. Transformation of the Wolffian duct into the epididymis, which is androgen dependent, is incomplete. Simultaneous administration of estrogen and HCG prevents cryptorchidism, and the appearance of the epididymis in the transmission and the scanning electron microscope is similar to the appearance of the epididymis of control animals. According to our studies the epididymis differentiation is a prime mover in a process which leads to the descensus of the testis.

Ultrastructural studies of human prostatic corpora amylacea and corpora calculi, and prostatic calculi were conducted in order to delineate their etiology and pathogenesis. In addition to several anomalous structures, other general forms of definitely rod-shaped microorganisms have been found by scanning and transmission electron microscopy in the lung tissue taken at autopsy from a patient who succumbed to confirmed Legionnaires' disease with extensive necrotizing lobar pneumonia. The microorganisms were greatly varied in size and shape. They were micrographed in the act of fission. These forms have been found to some extent throughout the tissue. No nickel was demonstrated, either in the lung tissue or in the microorganisms.

2 cases of congenital glaucoma combined with a general metabolic disease are described. 1 patient displayed the symptoms of a mucopolysaccharidosis (Hurler's syndrome), the other patient showed the characteristics of Lowe's oculo-cerebrorenal syndrome. In both patients a surgical trabeculectomy was performed. The excised tissues were analysed by electron microscopy. Distinct vacuolar or fibrillar deposits were observed in both cases in the trabecular region and in Schlemm's canal. Possibly, these alterations could have contributed to the raised intraocular pressure in both patients.
