Unraveling the secrets of Histoplasma capsulatum. A model to study morphogenic adaptation during parasite host/host interaction.

Early in the developmental period of microbiology, Pasteur first observed the phenomenon of dimorphism in fungi when he noticed that the bread mold Mucor grew as a filamentous mold aerobically on the surface of broth cultures but at the bottom of the flask where the environment was anaerobic it reproduced as budding yeast cells. Several infectious fungal pathogens of humans, namely Histoplasma capsulatum, Blastomyces dermatitidis, Paracoccidioides brasiliensis, Sporothrix schenkii, and Coccidioides immitis change from a multicellular filamentous form to an unicellular morphology when they inva

Fermentation impact: A comparative study on the functional and biological properties of Banana peel waste.

Banana fruit is a highly consumed and widely cultivated world food crop that generates plenty of waste globally. In this work, the phytochemical, nutritional, scavenging and therapeutic potentials of banana peel (BP) extracts were compared before and after fermentation. Halophilic fungi (Alternaria alternata, Pleosporaceae spp., Fusarium culmorum) were used in fermentation media designated as fermented banana peel FBP1, FBP2, and FBP3, respectively. Phytochemical coumarins, terpenoids, tannins, saponins, quinones, flavonoids, alkaloids, carbohydrates, proteins and steroids were found in all ex

The fecal mycobiome in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Studies investigating the gut-liver axis have largely focused on bacteria, whereas little is known about commensal fungi. We characterized fecal fungi in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and investigated their role in a fecal microbiome-humanized mouse model of Western diet-induced steatohepatitis. METHODS: We performed fungal internal transcribed spacer 2 sequencing using fecal samples from 78 patients with NAFLD, 16 controls and 73 patients with alcohol use disorder. Anti-Candida albicans (C. albicans) IgG was measured in blood samples from 17 contr

[Invasive Mold Infections in Patients with Hematologic Malignities: The Effects of Environmental Factors].

Invasive fungal infections (IFI) continue to be an important cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with hematological malignancies. Candida and Aspergillus species constitute most of the IFI in these patients.. It has been reported that most of the invasive aspergillosis epidemics are related to the construction works in the hospital. In this study, we aimed to investigate the frequency of IFI in the old and the new hospital building after relocation in patients with hematological malignancies. Of 8042 patients who were hospitalized in the Department of Hematology, Ondokuz Mayıs Univers

Zygomycetes in human disease.

The Zygomycetes represent relatively uncommon isolates in the clinical laboratory, reflecting either environmental contaminants or, less commonly, a clinical disease called zygomycosis. There are two orders of Zygomycetes containing organisms that cause human disease, the Mucorales and the Entomophthorales. The majority of human illness is caused by the Mucorales. While disease is most commonly linked to Rhizopus spp., other organisms are also associated with human infection, including Mucor, Rhizomucor, Absidia, Apophysomyces, Saksenaea, Cunninghamella, Cokeromyces, and Syncephalastrum spp. A

Reservoirs of spoilage fungi in the built environment of cultured dairy facilities vary by season and location.

UNLABELLED: The processing environment is a source of spoilage fungi in cultured dairy products. However, fungi within the built environment (i.e., non-food contact and architectural structures) of dairy processing facilities have not been well characterized. This study identified the seasonal and spatial variations in fungal identity, relative abundance, and diversity within the built environment of three cultured dairy facilities. Furthermore, we compared fungal genera in spoiled cultured dairy products to fungal genera in their facility's built environment. We used internal transcribed spac

Nano-bioremediation of metal-polluted industrial wastewater using myco-synthesized iron oxide nanoparticles derived from Aspergillus niger AUMC 16028.

The presence of heavy metals in wastewater poses serious ecological and environmental issues. Using biogenic nano adsorbents to remove heavy metals from industrial wastewater could be beneficial and serve as an alternative to traditional chemical and physical methods in real-world applications. The aim of this study is to biosynthesize green iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) for the removal of heavy metals from industrial wastewater. This process utilizes a cell-free extract derived from heavy metal-resistant fungi that were isolated from various industrial wastewater effluents in Egypt. Severa

Detection of Mucorales antigen in bronchoalveolar lavage samples using a newly developed lateral-flow device.

A murine IgG2b monoclonal antibody, named TG11, binding to an extracellular polysaccharide antigen secreted by all Mucorales fungi has been recently developed and integrated into a lateral-flow device (TG11-LFD). The aim of this study was to establish the clinical performance of TG11-LFD on bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluids for the diagnosis of mucormycosis. Thirteen BAL samples from 13 patients with mucormycosis, all of which tested positive for Mucorales qPCR (Mucor/Rhizopus [n = 5], Lichtheimia [n = 2], Rhizomucor [n = 5], and Cunninghamella [n = 1]), were used to assess the TG11-LFD. Neuroinfections caused by fungi.

BACKGROUND: Fungal infections of the central nervous system (FIs-CNS) have become significantly more common over the past 2 decades. Invasion of the CNS largely depends on the immune status of the host and the virulence of the fungal strain. Infections with fungi cause a significant morbidity in immunocompromised hosts, and the involvement of the CNS may lead to fatal consequences. METHODS: One hundred and thirty-five articles on fungal neuroinfection in PubMed, Google Scholar, and Cochrane databases were selected for review using the following search words: "fungi and CNS mycoses", CNS funga
