Immediate Implant Placement in Sockets with Asymptomatic Apical Periodontitis.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of the present study was to evaluate if the presence of granulation tissue in asymptomatic apical periodontitis compromised immediate implant placement. METHODS: Patients requiring extraction of one tooth (maxillary and mandibular incisive, canine or premolar) with asymptomatic apical periodontitis, were recruited for this prospective study. They were randomly scheduled into two groups: in first group (A) including 30 teeth, reactive soft tissue was debrided before implant placement, and in second group (B) including 30 teeth, reactive soft tissue was left in the apica

Nerve lesions following apical extrusion of non-setting calcium hydroxide: a systematic case review and report of two cases.

We present two cases of apical extrusion of non-setting, calcium hydroxide paste which had been placed as an interappointment root canal dressing during routine endodontic treatment resulting in tissue necrosis of a large part of the mandible. Surgical intervention consisted of resections in both instances. In relation to the cases presented, a systematic review of similar cases in the literature between 1980 and April 2013 was conducted which resulted in eight cases meeting the criteria outlined. As with the two presented cases, half of these eight cases showed serious adverse effects and the

The relationship between radionuclide bone scans and dental examinations.

Bone scans were evaluated in 57 patients referred from the nuclear medicine clinic. Areas of normal and abnormal radiopharmaceutical accumulation in the maxilla and mandible were correlated with a clinical and radiographic dental examination. There was an 80% agreement between the areas of normal and abnormal uptake with the clinical and radiographic findings. This was statistically significant (p less than 0.001). Twenty-one patients had clinical and radiographic dental examinations that were within normal limits and yet had abnormal bone scans. Five of these 21 patients were subsequently see

Influence of Osteoporosis on the Course of Apical Periodontitis.

Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by disruption of the bone microarchitecture. It is observed in both sexes, but to a greater extent in women. It affects the whole body, including the jaws. The main indicator of the presence of osteoporosis accepted by the World Health Organization is bone mineral density. The aim of this article is to find data on the influence of osteoporosis on apical periodontitis, to investigate how the intake of osteoporosis drugs affects apical periodontitis, and to establish various data that may be of benefit to the dental practitioner when treating patients wit

Regenerative endodontic therapy in a case of external inflammatory lateral resorption following a luxation.

BACKGROUND: The insurgence of external inflammatory lateral resorption (EILR) is one of the consequences of dental trauma and it can further complicate the prognosis of a compromised tooth. Long term treatment with Ca(OH)2 is the gold standard to manage EILR, and, recently, regenerative endodontic procedure (REP) has been suggested as an alternative clinical approach. The purpose of this report is to describe a case of post-traumatic EILR treated using REP. CASE REPORT: A 9 years-old girl experienced an extrusive luxation of tooth #11. At the first visit the tooth was asymptomatic and respons

Biomechanical behaviour of tilted abutment after fixed partial denture restoration of CAD/CAM materials.

BACKGROUND: Failure to restore missing teeth in time can easily lead to the mesial tilting of the distal abutment teeth. However, a fixed partial denture (FPD) can improve stress conduction and distribution and prevent periodontal injuries. In these more complex cases, it is necessary to consider various factors comprehensively to improve conventional treatment planning and achieve better results. METHODS: We selected a patient with a missing first molar and a mesial inclination of the second molar, leaving inadequate space or bone mass for implant denture restoration, necessitating an FPD fo

Bacterial dynamics in the progression of caries to apical periodontitis in primary teeth of children with severe early childhood caries.

BACKGROUND: Early childhood caries (ECC) are a prevalent chronic disease in young children. However, there has been limited research on the microbiota in different tissue levels of the same tooth in children with ECC. This study aimed to investigate the dynamic changes in bacterial diversity during the progression of Severe Early Childhood Caries (S-ECC) within the same tooth, from the tooth surface to the root canal, by collecting tissue samples from different areas of the affected tooth. METHODS: Twenty primary teeth with periapical periodontitis were selected from 20 children aged 3-5 year

[Research progress in the bidirectional relationship between oral infectious diseases and mental health issues].

Infectious oral diseases represent the most prevalent categories of oral conditions, including dental caries, periodontitis, periapical lesions, and pericoronitis. Their bidirectional relationship with mental health has emerged as a critical interdisciplinary research frontier. This paper integrates epidemiological findings and molecular mechanism evidence to analyze the significant comorbidity and correlation characteristics between infectious oral diseases such as caries and periodontitis, and psychological disorders including depression and anxiety. Oral diseases not only directly impair me

Bacterial Viability in Persistent Apical Periodontitis: A Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: Apical inflammatory lesions are a response to microbial infections. However, their persistence despite adequate clinical and radiographic conditions remains incompletely understood. This systematic review aimed to analyze the evidence regarding the presence of viable microorganisms in cases of persistent apical periodontitis. METHODS: A search was conducted in MEDLINE/PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus, Web of Science, The Cochrane Library, the CAPES Bank of Theses and Dissertations, and gray Literature. Restrictive inclusion criteria were applied, limiting the selection to studies in which

[Die externe zervikale Resorption bei Oberkiefer-Eckzähnen].

External cervical resorptions (ECRs) are challenging dental hard tissue lesions. They are frequently missed due to their asymptomatic progression. Three-dimensional imaging and increased awareness within the dental community have likely contributed to the observed rise in ECR prevalence over the recent years. While the exact etiology of ECR remains unclear, numerous risk factors have been identified, encompassing both physical and chemical factors. However, idiopathic cases have also been documented. Literature highlights the propensity of ECRs to occur in anterior teeth and molars, often link

A preclinical study comparing single- and double-root 3D-printed Ti-6Al-4V implants.

Recently, double-root implants have been investigated using 3D-printed technology. Here, we investigated damping capacity, microcomputed tomographic (micro-CT) and histological analyses of double-root 3D-printed implants compared with single-root 3D printed implants. Single- and double-root 3D-printed implants were fabricated and placed at both sides of mandibular third and fourth premolars in four beagle dogs. The damping capacity was measured, and periapical X-rays were taken every 2 weeks for 12 weeks. The bone volume/tissue volume (BV/TV) and bone mineral density (BMD) around the implants

[Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) a success story in apical surgery].

The objective of apical surgery is to retain teeth with persistent apical pathosis following orthograde root canal treatment if endodontic non-surgical revision is difficult or associated with risks, or is even declined by the patient. Since the most frequent cause of recurrent apical disease is bacterial reinfection from the (remaining) root canal system, the bacteria-tight root-end filling is the most important step in apical surgery. In the early 1990s, mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) was developed at the Loma Linda University in California/USA. Preclinical studies clearly showed that MTA
