[American cutaneous leishmaniasis: phlebotomine transmission area in the Municipality of Uberlândia, MG].

From May 2000 to January 2001 four, 15 hour-long collections of phlebotomine were done to the insect monitoring. The collection was done in an area of infection of American cutaneous leishmaniasis in the basin of the Araguari River in the municipality of Uberlandia (MG). The first collection was made in May (a cold, damp month), the second in June 2000 (a cold, dry month) the third in October 2000 (a hot, dry month) and the fourth in January 2001 (a hot, rainy month). CDC and Shannon light traps were used 6551 phlebotomne were captured and identified, 1990 male and 4562 female, comprised of tw

The ecology of infectious disease: effects of host diversity and community composition on Lyme disease risk.

The extent to which the biodiversity and community composition of ecosystems affect their functions is an issue that grows ever more compell … on hosts" (e.g., squirrels), characterized by high tick burdens, low reservoir competence, and high population density, as well as "rescue hosts" (e.g., shrews), which are capable of maintaining high disease risk when mouse density is low. Density-dependent host selection in ectoparasites: an application of isodar theory to fleas parasitizing rodents.

Parasites should make the same decisions that every animal makes regarding fitness reward. They can maximize reproductive success by selection of those habitats that guarantee the greatest fitness output. We consider the host population as a habitat of a parasite population. Consequently, hosts (=habitats) that differ quantitatively or qualitatively will support different numbers of parasites. The nature of habitat selection can be detected by isodars, lines along which habitat selection yields equivalent fitness reward. We applied this approach to study host selection of five fleas, each infe

Mapping disease incidence in suburban areas using remotely sensed data.

A method using remotely sensed data was developed to map the incidence of Q fever in the vicinity of Cayenne, French Guiana. A satellite image was processed to map land cover and generate a population density index, which was used to determine areas of high disease incidence during the 1996-2000 period. A comparison with results obtained using population census data showed strong concordance between the two incidence maps. All high-incidence areas identified using population census data were also detected using remotely sensed data. This demonstrates the potential of remote sensing as a new to…

[Short-term prediction of a change in the total stock of Daursk suslik fleas in the Transbaikal natural focus of plague].

Based on 20-year studies of changes in the total store of the imago of Daursk souslik fleas in the Transbaikal natural focus of plague and on observations of variations in some environmental factors, equations of the short-term prediction of the size of fleas have been constructed for each month (from May to September inclusive). The equations include from one to three predictors that significantly influence the dynamics in the abundance of exoparasites. A nonlinear regression analysis was used for statistical data processing. The results and reliability of short-term stepwise prediction of th

Impact of a 26-month Bacillus sphaericus trial on the preimaginal density of Culex quinquefasciatus in an urban area of Recife, Brazil.

A field trial using the entomopathogen Bacillus sphaericus against Culex quinquefasciatus was conducted in a district of Recife, Brazil, an area with a high prevalence of lymphatic filariasis. In this urban area more than 2,500 Cx. quinquefasciatus breeding sites within a 1.2-km2 area were found and subsequently submitted to a long-term treatment with B. sphaericus. To evaluate the impact of treatment on the densities of Cx. quinquefasciatus preimaginal forms, 26 breeding sites, representative of the major site types found in that area, were monitored for 3 years. Parameters such as mean and m

Abundance of Ixodes scapularis (Acari: Ixodidae) larvae and nymphs in relation to host density and habitat on Long Point, Ontario.

Ixodes scapularis Say populations were evaluated within 4 habitats on Long Point, Ontario, from 1990 to 1992 to ascertain whether differences in density of mouse populations within and among habitats were correlated with that of immature I. scapularis populations. I. scapularis immatures were rarely collected by dragging within the cottonwood dune habitat. Significantly more larvae (P < or = 0.05) were collected by drag sampling within the maple forest habitat than in the oak savannah or white pine habitats for the 1989, 1990, and 1991 cohorts, whereas the size of the 1992 larval cohort did no

Anthropophilic blackflies (Diptera: Simuliidae) and onchocerciasis transmission in southwest Ethiopia.

From May 1984 to May 1985, the transmission of onchocerciasis by blackflies (Dipteria: Simuliidae) was studied around Gilgel Ghibe and Gojeb rivers in southwest Ethiopia. The predominant anthropophilic species of Simulium at both localities were S. (Edwardsellum) damnosum sensu lato and S. (Lewisellum) ethiopiense. Some S. (Anasolen) dentulosum also landed on human bait at Gilgel Ghibe river. Dissections of S. damnosum from Gilgel Ghibe and Gojeb revealed mean parous rates of 92% (n = 18,291) and 84% (n = 9530), respectively. S. ethiopiense from Gilgel Ghibe and Gojeb showed mean parous rates

[Contribution of a mathematical model in the control of a parasitosis: the case of human African trypanosomiasis due to Trypanosoma brucei gambiense].

Trypanosoma brucei gambiense sleeping sickness transmitted by tsetse flies (Glossina spp.) is lethal if not treated adequately. The endemicity was generally well under control in the sixties. However, since the seventies the disease is returning in most of its old foci, with alarming endemic levels in several areas. Mathematical modelling provides a rational basis for finding the optimal strategies to control these recrudescences. We present a deterministic model of the basic transmission of trypanosomiasis between human and vector hosts in natural situations. The parameters were quantified on

Transmission of Schistosoma mansoni under experimental conditions using the bovine--Biomphalaria glabrata-bovine model.

Three calves experimentally infected with Schistosoma mansoni, and passing viable eggs in feces, as well as 5 normal calves (coming from a non-endemic area for schistosomiasis) kept as controls, were maintained in an enclosure (850 m2 in area). In this enclosure, a tank with water received 500 laboratory reared Biomphalaria glabrata. All the control calves were infected for a period ranging from 79 to 202 days after the beginning of the experiment, and afterwards presented viable S. mansoni eggs in feces. The mean worm recovery was 555. The snail population increased throughout the experimenta

Study of a population of Biomphalaria tenagophila (Orbigny, 1835) and of schistosomiasis transmission in "Alto da Boa Vista", Rio de Janeiro.

The present study was performed using data from a Biomphalaria tenagophila population located in a watercress garden in the Alto da Boa Vista region representing an isolated focal point of schistosomiasis in the city of Rio de Janeiro. The density and age structure of this B. tenagophila population and its rate of infection by Schistosoma mansoni were studied for a period of 15 months. The snail population showed seasonal variation in density, with a decrease in number of individuals at the beginning of the rainy season. At the end of this season, the population consisted mainly of adults (92.

[Ecology of Lutzomyia longipalpis (Lutz & Neiva, 1912) and possibilities of the existence of visceral leishmaniasis in Costa Rica].

A semiarid area of northwest Costa Rica where Lutzomyia longipalpis is common in corrals around houses is described. Monthly captures of the sandfly during two consecutive years for fixed periods of time indicated that the insect bites avidly cows, horses, pigs, dogs and humans. From a total of 14,215 specimens, 90.5% were males and the species is markedly more abundant during the dry season decreasing considerably when rain comes. The possibility that visceral leishmaniasis could become in the future established in the area is discussed, in view of the fact that it already exists endemically

Puberty delay by a urinary cue from female house mice in feral populations.

Urine produced by wild female house mice, living in high- and low-density populations and confined to areas within a highway cloverleaf, was tested for its ability to delay puberty in juvenile female mice. Only urine collected from females in the dense population at its maximum density delayed puberty in test females. Urine collected when the population was less dense, or from a population that remained sparse, failed to delay puberty. These results suggest that a urinary factor present at high densities may delay puberty and thus help to slow further population growth.
