How Have Animal Models Increased our Understanding of Human Myopia?

The extent to which animal models of refractive development have increased our understanding of human myopia is reviewed. During postnatal development refractive errors converge on emmetropia in young animals but form deprivation disrupts this process. Their eyes compensate for optically imposed myopic or hyperopic defocus and recover from the induced refractive error when form deprivation or optical defocus is removed. All of these features have, to some extent, been observed in young children. The lens paradigm has been further leveraged in animals to investigate the influence of competing o

Effect of gradient-index lenses on the optical performance of SyntEyes.

This study analyzes the effect of two different gradient index (GRIN) crystalline lens models on ocular optical performance compared to that of a homogeneous lens. Using the biometric data of 200 SyntEyes (synthetically generated eyes), we implemented three lens models: homogeneous, GRIN, and GRINCU (gradient index and gradient curvature of the isoindicial surfaces). Using the three lens models, we conducted finite ray tracing on the SyntEyes samples, incorporating five different curvature gradients into the GRINCU setup. We calculated the average cardinal points and Zernike aberration coeffic

Retinal shadows produced by myopia control spectacles.

PURPOSE: To analyse ocular coherence tomography (OCT) images of the retinal shadows caused by defocus and diffusion optics spectacles. METHODS: One eye was fitted successively with the Hoya Defocus Incorporated Multiple Segments (DIMS) spectacle lens, two variations of the +3.50 D peripheral add spectacle (DEFOCUS) and the low-contrast dot lens (Diffusion Optics Multiple Segments, DOMS); each at a vertex distance of 12 mm. Simultaneously, a retinal image of the macular region with central fixation was obtained using infrared OCT. The corneal power and intraocular distances were determined usi

Utilising a visual image quality metric to optimise spectacle prescriptions for eyes with keratoconus.

PURPOSE: To compare optical performance, visual performance, and patient-perceived quality of vision with: (1) spectacles determined using subjective refraction and (2) spectacles determined using an objective optimisation method based on wavefront aberration data for eyes with keratoconus. METHODS: Thirty-seven eyes (20 subjects) with keratoconus underwent both subjective refraction and uncorrected wavefront aberration measurement. Wavefront aberration data were used to objectively identify a sphero-cylindrical refraction that optimised the visual image quality metric visual Strehl ratio (VS

Effect of mount location on the quantification of light intensity in myopia study.

PURPOSE: To investigate how the mounting location of wearable devices affects the measurement of light intensity. METHODS: Two commercially available wearable devices, HOBO and Clouclip, were used to compare the effects of different mount locations on light intensity measurement. We assessed the consistency of the measurements of the two devices by placing a HOBO and a Clouclip simultaneously in 26 different light environments and measuring the light intensity. To simulate the real-life usage scenarios of the two devices, we had 29 participants wear two HOBOs-one on the wrist and the other on

Surgically induced astigmatism made easy: calculating the surgically induced change in sphere and cylinder for corneal incisional, corneal laser, and intraocular lens-based surgery.

Net cylinder and spherocylinder formats characterize individual keratometries and prescriptions but must be converted to dioptric vectors to allow for calculations and statistical analyses. Næser's polar value system was specifically developed for the analysis of the surgically induced refractive change along the surgical meridian. This study provides a short description together with a practical manual and a computer program for the use of this dioptric vector method. Measurement techniques, vector equations, statistical methods, and terminology are reviewed. The analysis is identical for cor

Correcting for physical distortions in visual stimuli improves reproducibility in zebrafish neuroscience.

Optical refraction causes light to bend at interfaces between optical media. This phenomenon can significantly distort visual stimuli presented to aquatic animals in water, yet refraction has often been ignored in the design and interpretation of visual neuroscience experiments. Here we provide a computational tool that transforms between projected and received stimuli in order to detect and control these distortions. The tool considers the most commonly encountered interface geometry, and we show that this and other common configurations produce stereotyped distortions. By correcting these di
