The key roles of selection and migration in the ecology of Lyme borreliosis.

The roles of selection and migration of B. burgdorferi s. l. were studied. Questing adult Ixodes ricinus ticks were collected across Europe and analysed for infection with B. burgdorferi s. l. Analysis of the genospecies in individual ticks showed that B. garinii and B. valaisiana segregate from B. afzelii. Segregation of bird- and rodent-associated Borrelia genotypes can be explained by the operation of complement-mediated selection in the midgut of the feeding tick. Phylogenetic analyses of B. burgdorferi s. l. indicate high rates of migration for bird-associated genotypes. Altogether, it is…

[Differences in the distant transmission of the tick-borne encephalitis virus by ixodid ticks of 2 subfamilies].

Simultaneous but separate feeding of ticks on nonviremic animal (guinea pig) has shown that Amblyomminae ticks are practically unable to transmit distantly tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) to the specimens of their own subfamily and to Ixodinae as well. Ixodes persulcatus and I. ricinus displayed their ability as donors and recipients of TBEV (adults and nymphs) not only for their own subfamily representatives but also as donors for recipients of Amblyomminae subfamily (nymphs and adults of Dermacentor and Rhipicephalus and nymphs of Haemaphysalis). Experimental and literature data analysi…

RcAlb-PepII Perturbs the Proteomic Profile of Cryptococcus neoformans, Shutting Down Proteins Involved in Fungal Survival.

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) occur naturally in living organisms and play an essential role in defense against pathogens. Consequently, these peptides are significant in public health research as alternatives in addressing microbial resistance. Here, we present the proteomic profile of Cryptococcus neoformans treated with RcAlb-PepII, an AMP derived from the 2S albumin of Ricinus communis seed cake. This research is noteworthy, as C. neoformans is an emerging fungal pathogen classified by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a critical threat. Proteomic analysis revealed depletion of protei…

The Emergence and Dynamics of Tick-Borne Encephalitis Virus in a New Endemic Region in Southern Germany.

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is the most important viral tick-borne infection in Europe and Asia. It is emerging in new areas. The mechanisms of emergence are fairly unknown or speculative. In the Ravensburg district in southern Germany, TBE emerged, mainly over the last five years. Here, we analyzed the underlying epidemiology in humans. The resulting identified natural foci of the causal TBE virus (TBEV) were genetically characterized. We sampled 13 potential infection sites at these foci and detected TBEV in ticks (Ixodes ricinus) at eight sites. Phylogenetic analysis spurred the introduct…

Transnational exchange of surveillance data reveals previously unrecognized TBEV microfocus.

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is a tick-borne infection with an increasing presence in many European countries. It is caused by the TBE virus (TBEV), a flavivirus transmitted by the Ixodes ricinus tick in northern Europe. In Denmark, the virus exists endemically on the island of Bornholm. However, a large proportion of Danish cases are also imported from Sweden, where the incidence of TBE has steadily been increasing during the last few decades. With the prospect of expanding risk areas due to climate change, TBE surveillance data exchange between countries could facilitate the identification …

The spirochetal etiology of acrodermatitis chronica atrophicans Herxheimer.

Spirochetes were recovered from the skin lesion of 1 out of 10 acrodermatitis chronica atrophicans patients (ACA). Spirochetes from this skin isolate and from Ixodes (I.) ricinus and I. dammini spirochetes were used as antigens in indirect immunofluorescence tests. All sera from 17 ACA patients showed high antibody titers to the three antigens. Seven of the 17 sera which had the highest titers had crossreactive antibodies to treponemal antigen detectable in the FTA-ABS test. The results indicate that spirochetes are of importance for ACA and probably the causative agent of this disease. The co…

[The spirochetal etiology of erythema chronicum migrans and Garin-Bujadoux-Bannwarth meningo-polyneuritis].

Erythema chronicum migrans and tick-born meningo-polyneuritis Garin-Bujadoux-Bannwarth are caused by a spirochete transmitted by Ixodes ricinus. The same is true of Lyme disease, the erythema chronicum migrans infection of North America transmitted by ticks of the same genus. In Europe demonstration of IgG and IgM antibodies against Borrelia duttoni during the course of infection and by immunofluorescence staining of spirochetes in ticks at sites of infection indicate this etiology. In the USA a spirochete could be isolated from ticks and from blood, skin and cerebrospinal fluid of patients wi…

Co-infection of Ticks: The Rule Rather Than the Exception.

INTRODUCTION: Ticks are the most common arthropod vectors of both human and animal diseases in Europe, and the Ixodes ricinus tick species is able to transmit a large number of bacteria, viruses and parasites. Ticks may also be co-infected with several pathogens, with a subsequent high likelihood of co-transmission to humans or animals. However few data exist regarding co-infection prevalences, and these studies only focus on certain well-known pathogens. In addition to pathogens, ticks also carry symbionts that may play important roles in tick biology, and could interfere with pathogen mainte…

Different tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) prevalences in unfed versus partially engorged ixodid ticks--evidence of virus replication and changes in tick behavior.

There is some evidence that tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) prevalence in ticks, removed from humans, is higher than that in field-collected ticks from the same area. There are two possible explanations: (i) Infected ticks are more active and aggressive and can be found on humans more often. (ii) Some questing ticks are infected with TBEV in a low, undetectable concentration; during tick feeding, virus replicates and reaches the titers that can be detected. The aim of our work was to evaluate both hypotheses. Using unfed adult Ixodes ricinus, we compared three methods of tick infection wi…

Pathogens and symbionts in ticks: prevalence of Anaplasma phagocytophilum (Ehrlichia sp.), Wolbachia sp., Rickettsia sp., and Babesia sp. in Southern Germany.

Tick-transmitted diseases like tick-borne encephalitis and Lyme borreliosis have been well known in Germany for decades. Ongoing research now gives an additional focus to a broad range of other bacteria and parasites in ticks like Anaplasma phagocytophilum, former Ehrlichia sp., Rickettsia sp. and Babesia sp. Knowledge about the prevalence of these infectious agents in ticks is an important prerequisite for risk assessment of human diseases. Therefore nymphs and adult Ixodes ricinus ticks were collected and examined for Anaplasma phagocytophilum (n = 5424 ticks), Rickettsia sp. (n = 1187), and…

Full genome sequences and preliminary molecular characterization of three tick-borne encephalitis virus strains isolated from ticks and a bank vole in Slovak Republic.

The full genome sequences of three tick-borne encephalitis virus strains, two isolated from Ixodes ricinus ticks and one from the brain of a bank vole, Myodes glareolus, originating from the Slovak Republic were determined. Nucleotide sequences were found to be very similar (>99.5 % nt-identity) with only one distinct amino acid (aa) difference to each other. They all shared 30 aa-changes when compared to type strain Neudoerfl, isolated in neighboring Austria. An internal poly(A)-stretch similar to that of strain Neudoerfl was found only in TBEV strain 114 from a tick. Despite this heterogenei…

Sensitivity of a point of care tick-test for the development of Lyme borreliosis.

BACKGROUND: A commercially available self-test for the detection of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato in ticks was evaluated for its ability to predict erythema migrans formation. FINDINGS: The self-test was performed on 127 Ixodes ricinus from 122 humans that reported tick bites at enrolment and occurrence of symptoms during follow-up. The self-test gave negative results on all the 122 individuals, 14 of whom reported erythema migrans (EM) at follow-up of which 10 were confirmed by their GP. The estimated sensitivity of the self-test for prediction of EM formation is 0% (95% CI: 0%-28%). CONC…

Pollution tolerance and distribution pattern of plants in surrounding area of coal-fired industries.

Higher concentration of SO2 and particulate matters was reported in surrounding areas of coal-fired industries which influences the distribution pattern of plants. Sensitive plant species are abolished from such areas, however, only pollution tolerant species survive under stress conditions. The present study was designed to investigate the vegetation composition around coal-fired industries i.e. brick industries. To categorise plants as sensitive or resistant air pollution tolerance index (APTI) value was calculated. Out of 99 plants studied, Ricinus communis with APTI 81.10 was found to be t…

[Ticks, tick bites and how best to remove the tick].

As a rule, the tick, Ixodes ricinus, is picked up when its victim walks through low vegetation and brushes it off a leaf or blade of grass. Often hours later, the tick scores the skin at the site it selects and then pushes its barbed hypostome into the tiny wound to anchor itself to its victim with the aid of a cement-like substance and the barbs. While it sucks up blood, Borrelia burgdorferi spirochetes pass out of the tick's intestine into its salivary glands and thence into the host. It is therefore of decisive importance that the tick be removed with a special forceps as early as possible.…

Borrelia burgdorferi infections with special reference to horses. A review.

This review discusses the literature on B. burgdorferi infections in view of the rising incidence of this infection in general and the increasing concerns of horse owners and equine practitioners. Lyme disease, the clinical expression of Borrelia infections in man is an important health problem. The geographic distribution of B. burgdorferi infections in equidae should resemble that of human cases because the vector tick involved, Ixodes ricinus, feeds on both species and, indeed, the infection has been established many times in horses. However, a definite diagnosis of the disease "Lyme borrel…
