Social workers' interactions with physicians in hospitals have a long history, but there is also a history of differences between physicians and social workers, with a focus on distinct "tribalism" and separate "silos." However, in recent years there has been more emphasis on "boundary blurring," interprofessional and integrated working, although social work still seems concerned about having a legitimate role in health care and about gaining recognition from physicians. Only limited research has been undertaken this century about the attitudes and perceptions of hospital-based physicians towa

Every wave of preferred substance use in adolescence serves similar developmental functions. The recent explosion among adolescents of electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), popularly known as vaping, offers an opportunity to revisit models of the role of substance use in adolescent development. Social media's rise alongside that of ENDS distinguishes this recent phenomenon from previous historical waves of substance abuse: Vaping was and remains highly integrated into the digital culture, situating social media as a unique window into the adolescent users' subjective experience. To that

This study investigates the links between community readiness and the social networks among participants in Communities That Care (CTC), community-based prevention coalitions. The coalitions targeted adolescent behavior problems through community risk factor assessments, prioritization of risk factors, and selection/implementation of corresponding evidence-based family, school, and community programs. Key leaders (n = 219) in 23 new CTC sites completed questionnaires focusing on community readiness to implement CTC and the respondents' personal, work, and social organization links to other key

Domestic violence, defined as acts of verbal abuse and physical violence performed against women by current intimate main partners, was surveyed by means of the Conflict Tactics Scale. We examined the relationships between a biological variable (testosterone level), social variables (demographics, social integration), and behaviour (substance use) and self-reported domestic violence. Forced-entry OLS regression models allowed us to study how social and behavioural variables modified the effects of testosterone on this specific violent behaviour. The sample consisted of 54 men who had a main se…

BACKGROUND: Social determinants of health (SDOH) may influence cancer outcomes, although their integration in routine clinical records remains limited.
METHODS: This retrospective two-center cohort included adults with histologically confirmed advanced colorectal adenocarcinoma diagnosed in 2023. Clinical variables and prespecified SDOH were extracted from electronic medical records. The primary endpoint was documentation completeness for each SDOH variable.
RESULTS: Forty-four patients were included. Clinical variables were consistently documented, whereas SDOH showed substantial missing da

This study investigated how hunger and poverty influence children's willingness to share resources with a hungry recipient, as well as how these factors interact across development. Participants included 918 children aged 5 to 8 years from Bolivia, Haiti, and Cambodia, who were recruited from neighborhoods within each country varying in socioeconomic status. Children completed sharing tasks both before and after lunch. Linear mixed model analyses revealed that neighborhood poverty and acute hunger jointly influenced children's sharing behavior towards hungry recipients, but only when both fact

A child's sensory processing and sensory integration (SP-SI) differences can be a barrier to participation in daily life for both child and mother. Supporting mothers is advocated for, but little is known about the everyday experiences of these mothers. To gain an understanding of daily life for mothers and their children with SP-SI differences. Qualitative semi-structured interviews with six mothers were analyzed through thematic analysis. Theme 1 described the impact of child SP-SI on daily life, including challenges in occupations across environments, adaptations required, and the lack of k

The development of new therapeutic approaches is considered to be a major contributor to the re-evaluation of therapeutic outcomes in schizophrenia. The present review accentuates the recent dimensional concept of improvement, including the integration of social and clinical aspects of different treatment approaches together with the culture-specific pragmatic concept of the therapeutic success. The outpatient status of the patient in itself is no longer recognised as a final success of the therapy, if the very basic aspects of self-management and performance, education and employment of the s

Background: Armed conflicts affect mental health. In Colombia, many communities have been victims of armed conflict and multiple social inequalities and injustices for more than six decades. Our research explored the social determinants of mental health in fifteen municipalities affected by the armed conflict in Montes de María, Colombia. Method: A convergent parallel mixed methods design was conducted. In the quantitative component, we assessed mental health (PHQ-4 and DASS-21), social support (Medical Outcomes Study Social Support Survey - MOS), and sense of community (Brief Sense of Communi

INTRODUCTION: While recent studies have highlighted sexual dysfunctions as a common comorbidity of several psychiatric disorders very few have focused on social anxiety disorder. However, its shared impact with sexual dysfunctions on interpersonal relationships and self-esteem suggested a potential bidirectional relationship worth investigating.
OBJECTIVES: To provide an overview of the available literature on the relationship between social anxiety disorder and sexual dysfunctions, particularly by exploring the frequency and nature of sexual dysfunctions in patients with social anxiety disor

This study was designed to determine if ToM abilities of children with autism and Asperger syndrome differentiate into Intrapersonal ToM and Social ToM. A battery of Social and Intrapersonal ToM tasks was administered to 39 children with autism and 34 children with Asperger syndrome. For both groups of children, ToM differentiated and Intrapersonal ToM was stronger than Social ToM. This asymmetry was greater for children with autism, whose Social ToM was especially weak. These results support a differentiated, as opposed to integrated, ToM. Moreover, the findings provide a more thorough unders

BACKGROUND: Social adversity contributes to poor health outcomes for children after liver transplantation (LT), including greater morbidity and mortality. Although social risk screening is standard practice in pediatric primary care, its adoption in pediatric LT (pLT) remains limited, despite the significant prevalence of social risks among these families.
OBJECTIVES: To evaluate barriers and facilitators to social risk screening implementation in pLT settings across a multicenter learning health network.
RESEARCH DESIGN: A mixed-methods study utilizing surveys and semistructured interviews.

BACKGROUND: There is mounting evidence that, among musculoskeletal patients, variation in capability has more notable associations with variations in mental and social health factors than with variation in pathophysiology severity. This study sought factors that could limit the integration of this evidence into more comprehensive care models.
METHODS: In two scenario-based experiments, surgeon participants in an international collaborative, the Science of Variation Group, reviewed scenarios of (a) nontraumatic (83 participants) and (b) trauma-related (130 participants) pathophysiologies for w

Background: Gender is a determinant of health that intersects with other social stratifiers to shape the health and well-being of populations. Despite the recognition of gender in the global health agenda, limited evidence exists about the integration of gender considerations in interventions, including social marketing interventions, for the prevention and control of neglected tropical diseases. Social marketing is an ethical approach to behavior change aiming to benefit individuals, communities, and society. Since behaviors are gendered and affect disease transmission and healthcare patterns

PURPOSE: Humans evolved within the mammalian line as a highly social species. Indeed, sociality has been a major driver of human social intelligence. From birth, social relationships have emotional and self-regulating properties and operate through different body systems. This paper will explore how heart rate variability (HRV), an index of the vagal regulation of the heart and a central element of the physiological underpinnings of sociality, is related to mental health problems, with important implications for psychotherapy.
METHODS: We conducted a narrative review of the literature on the

Amygdala is an intensively researched brain structure involved in social processing and multiple major clinical disorders, but its functions are not well understood. The functions of a brain structure are best hypothesized on the basis of neuroanatomical connectivity findings, and of behavioral, neuroimaging, neuropsychological and physiological findings. Among the heaviest neuroanatomical interconnections of amygdala are those with perirhinal cortex (PRC), but these are little considered in the theoretical literature. PRC integrates complex, multimodal, meaningful and fine-grained distributed

INTRODUCTION: Burns affecting the head and neck (H&N) can lead to significant changes in appearance. It is postulated that such injuries have a negative impact on patients' social functioning, quality of life, physical health, and satisfaction with appearance, but there has been little investigation of these effects using patient reported outcome measures. This study evaluates the effect of H&N burns on long-term patient reported outcomes compared to patients who sustained burns to other areas.
METHODS: Data from the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Res
