PURPOSE: To review cross-linking the cornea using riboflavin and ultraviolet A light, which has been widely adopted, refined and applied in a range of corneal surgeries and pathologies where the strength of the cornea might be compromised.

Bullous morphea is a rare variant of localised scleroderma characterised by skin thickening and blister development. The following case report describes a woman in her 60s diagnosed with bullous morphea. The patient initially presented with a shiny, pruritic rash that spread from her back to her legs. RATIONALE: Eye rubbing (ER) is a proven factor that can trigger the onset and progression of keratoconus (KC). Apart from allergy, ER is a repetitive motor stereotypy. Eye rubbing is frequently observed in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) and in individuals who may be at risk for developing KC. The relative genetic and immune protection against melanoma and nonmelanoma skin cancers in those with vitiligo is reassuring. The results of recent studies allow us to be cautiously optimistic when discussing the risk of skin cancer caused by therapeutic exposure to narrow-band ultraviolet B light. BACKGROUND: Treatment of depigmented skin is an unmet medical need.
OBJECTIVE: Melanocytes or stem cells thereof residing in the outer root sheath (ORS) of hair follicles might be used to repigment skin.
METHODS: After de-epidermisation, autologous ORS cell solutions were applied to 5 patients with vitiligo and 1 with leucoderma.
RESULTS: Stable repigmentation in a variable percentage was documented in all the patients.
CONCLUSION: Applying ORS-derived melanocytes is a promising technology to improve autologous melanocyte transplantation.
