Video self-modeling as a post-treatment fluency recovery strategy for adults.

PURPOSE: This multiple-baseline across subjects study investigated the effectiveness of video self-modeling (VSM) in reducing stuttering and bringing about improvements in associated self-report measures. Participants' viewing practices and perceptions of the utility of VSM also were explored. METHODS: Three adult males who had previously completed speech restructuring treatment viewed VSM recordings twice per week for 6 weeks. Weekly speech data, treatment viewing logs, and pre- and post-treatment self-report measures were obtained. An exit interview also was conducted. RESULTS: Two partici

Does Patient Race/Ethnicity Influence Physician Decision-Making for Diagnosis and Treatment of Childhood Disruptive Behavior Problems?

Race/ethnic disparities in utilization of children's mental health care have been well documented and are particularly concerning given the long-term risks of untreated mental health problems (Institute of Medicine, 2003; Kessler et al. Am J Psychiatry 152:10026-1032, 1995). Research investigating the higher rates of unmet need among race/ethnic minority youths has focused primarily on policy, fiscal, and individual child or family factors that can influence service access and use. Alternatively, this study examines provider behavior as a potential influence on race/ethnic disparities in menta

Cue-induced craving and physiological reactions in recently and long-abstinent heroin-dependent patients.

OBJECTIVE: To understand the different patterns of cue-induced craving and physiological reactions among recently abstinent and long-abstinent heroin-dependent patients. METHOD: 26 healthy adult controls (HC), 29 long-abstinent (more than 1 year, LA), and 26 recently abstinent (less than 1 month, RA) heroin-dependent individuals were exposed to heroin-related and neutral video cues, one video per session, on different days in random order. Self-reported heroin craving by a 10-point visual analog scale (VAS), physiological reactions [skin conductance (SC), muscle electromyography (MEG), skin t

The impact of two educational interventions on osteoporosis diagnosis and treatment after fragility fracture: a population-based randomized controlled trial.

UNLABELLED: This study assessed whether osteoporosis diagnosis and treatment after an osteoporotic fracture can be increased by providing osteoporosis reading material to patients and family doctors or by watching a videocassette about osteoporosis. Educating patients about osteoporosis had little impact on whether a woman received an osteoporosis diagnosis or treatment. INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact of two education-based interventions on osteoporosis diagnosis and treatment in women ≥ 50 years of age after fragility fracture. METHODS: Six to eight mo

Manual therapy in infantile torticollis: a randomized, controlled pilot study.

AIM: Torticollis in infancy is routinely treated by child physiotherapists. The addition of manual therapy to the treatment is a new approach in Norway. As the effect of manual therapy for this condition is poorly documented, we designed a pilot study to evaluate measurement methods and examine the short-time effect of manual therapy in addition to child physiotherapy. METHODS: Randomized controlled trial, double blinded. Thirty-two patients aged 3-6 months were randomized to intervention group (manual therapy and child physiotherapy) and control group (child physiotherapy alone). PRIMARY OU

Social perception in children with intellectual disabilities: the interpretation of benign and hostile intentions.

A key aspect of social perception is the interpretation of others' intentions. Children with intellectual disabilities (IDs) have difficulty interpreting benign intentions when a negative event occurs. From a cognitive processing perspective, interpreting benign intentions can be challenging because it requires integration of conflicting information, as the social cues accompanying the negative event convey non-hostile intentions. The present study examined how children with ID process conflicting social information in a more diverse set of situational circumstances than was investigated previ

Visual search strategies and decision making in baseball batting.

The goal was to examine the differences in visual search strategies between expert and nonexpert baseball batters during the preparatory phase of a pitcher's pitching and accuracy and timing of swing judgments during the ball's trajectory. 14 members of a college team (Expert group), and graduate and college students (Nonexpert group), were asked to observe 10 pitches thrown by a pitcher and respond by pushing a button attached to a bat when they thought the bat should be swung to meet the ball (swing judgment). Their eye movements, accuracy, and the timing of the swing judgment were measured.

Ictal grasping: prevalence and characteristics in seizures with different semiology.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to investigate ictal grasping (IG), defined as the act of gripping something firmly during focal epileptic seizures, and to evaluate whether it characterizes specific seizure types. METHODS: We analyzed the video-recordings of 694 seizures in 109 consecutive candidates to epilepsy surgery. Seizures with motor manifestations (n = 511) were selected and divided into four semiological groups: (a) frontal "hyperkinetic" seizures (FHS): 30 seizures, 12 patients, (b) frontal lobe seizures (FLS) other than FHS: 228 seizures, 26 patients, (c) temporal lobe seizures

Communication in cancer genetic counselling: does it reflect counselees' previsit needs and preferences?

This study sought to describe counsellor-counselee interaction during initial cancer genetic counselling consultations and to examine whether the communication reflects counselees' previsit needs. A total of 130 consecutive counselees, referred mainly for breast or colon cancer, completed a questionnaire before their first appointment at a genetic clinic. Their visit was videotaped. Counselee and counsellor verbal communications were analysed and initiative to discuss 11 genetics-specific conversational topics was assessed. The content of the visit appeared relatively standard. Overall, counse

Relationship among glottal area, static supraglottic compression, and laryngeal function studies in unilateral vocal fold paresis and paralysis.

In this study, we evaluated the relationship between laryngeal function measures and glottal gap ratio and normalized measures of supraglottic behaviors in patients with unilateral vocal fold paresis (UVFP). Thirty-one patients were found to have unilateral vocal fold paresis by videoendoscopy and laryngeal electromyography, and 13 controls participated in this study. Patients with UVFP demonstrated significantly larger glottal gap ratios (p = 0.016) than control subjects. The nonparalyzed or contralateral vocal fold was associated with significantly more static false vocal fold compression (p

The validity of the ISAAC written questionnaire and the ISAAC video questionnaire (AVQ 3.0) for predicting asthma associated with bronchial hyperreactivity in a group of 13-14 year old Korean schoolchildren.

To validate the prevalence rate of symptoms of asthma produced by the phase I ISAAC (International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood) study, hypertonic saline challenge test was carried out during the phase II study at a year after the phase I study. For the phase II study, six middle schools from three cities in the phase I study were selected. Finally, 499 children who responded to both studies were analyzed. All subjects were asked to complete the written questionnaire (WQ) first, followed by a video questionnaire (AVQ 3.0) during the phase I study. Of the 499 children, only 19 (3.

Patient pain during colonoscopy: an analysis using real-time magnetic endoscope imaging.

BACKGROUND AND STUDY AIMS: Colonoscopy is generally perceived as being a painful procedure. Contributory factors are: stretching of the colonic wall and mesenteric attachments from looping of the instrument shaft, overinsufflation, the degree of torque or force applied to the colonoscope shaft, and patient pain threshold. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of pain episodes experienced during diagnostic colonoscopy and the corresponding colonoscope configuration, utilizing real-time magnetic endoscope imaging (MEI). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Consecutive outpatients undergoing col

Re-ventriculostomy for treatment of obstructive hydrocephalus in cases of stoma dysfunction.

In this article, 12 re-ventriculostomies in the treatment for obstructive hydrocephalus are described. The etiology of the hydrocephalus was a benign aqueductal stenosis in 9 patients, a tumor around the aqueduct in 2 patients and intraventricular bleeding in one patient. In all cases the initial ventriculostomy was successful, but after a time interval of 2 weeks to 6 years the patients developed similar clinical symptoms as preoperatively. In all except one case the radiological findings spoke in favour of stoma closure. Intraoperatively the stoma was completely closed in 9 patients and in 3

Pupillary and cardiovascular responses to a video movie in senior human subjects.

The effects of watching video movies on autonomic functions were estimated by measuring changes in pupillary and cardiovascular parameters in 10 senior subjects. The subjects looked at a series of video images (with accompanied sounds) taken during the execution of motor vehicles. The images were rear-projected on a large screen for 15 min. Pupil diameter and parameters of the light reflex were measured by an infrared pupillometer before and after the video presentation. Their electrocardiograms (ECG) and blood pressure were measured continuously. Subjects were divided into two groups dependin

Controlled pilot study of piracetam for pediatric opsoclonus-myoclonus.

Piracetam is an effective symptomatic treatment for some types of myoclonus in adults. To survey the efficacy and safety of piracetam in pediatric opsoclonus-myoclonus, we conducted an open, randomized, two-period, dose-ranging, double-blind, crossover, clinical trial of five children comparing the antimyoclonic properties of oral piracetam to placebo. We devised and validated a new rating scale, specifically for pediatric opsoclonus-myoclonus. Two parents while blinded were able to identify the active phase by improvement in behavior, but another thought the behavior was worse. None of the pa

Pharyngeal dysesthesias as an aura in temporal lobe epilepsy associated with amygdalar pathology.

PURPOSE: Pharyngeal dysesthetic auras are typically described with centrotemporal and opercular seizure-onset localizations. In this report we describe the fourth case in literature with temporal lobe seizures, apparently secondary to an amygdalar lesion on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), presenting with prominent pharyngeal dysesthesias as the initial, or only, seizure manifestation. METHODS: Because of diagnostic uncertainty regarding the nature of the pharyngeal sensations, our case underwent prolonged extracranial video-EEG monitoring. RESULTS: Video-EEG information documented the epil

Life-threatening dystonia-dyskinesias in a child: successful treatment with bilateral pallidal stimulation.

We report a 13-year-old boy who developed severe, refractory dystonia-dyskinesias as an abrupt worsening of a previously nonprogressive movement disorder. The movements became continuous, requiring artificial respiration and continuous sedation in the intensive-care unit. Various drugs and drug combinations failed to achieve control. The child was then treated successfully with bilateral pallidal (GPi) stimulation as shown in the videotape. Four months later and without medication, the boy regained autonomous gait and audible speech; his neurologic condition continues to improve.
