PURPOSE: To report a case of idiopathic vortex vein dilatation diagnosed using multimodal imaging, including indocyanine green angiography (ICGA), sodium fluorescein angiography (FFA), wide-angle color fundus photography, fundus autofluorescence (FAF), and ocular ultrasound.
METHODS: Vortex vein dilatation is a clinically rare phenomenon, often incidentally detected during imaging. Its characteristic fundus appearance can mimic choroidal tumors or vascular lesions, potentially leading to unnecessary intervention. Current literature lacks sufficient reports of idiopathic cases and detailed des

A 34-year-old man presented to our emergency department with a 6-day history of bloody stools. He had no complaints of alteration in bowel habits in the stool. He did not consume alcohol and was a non-smoker. The patient had no any previous notable medical history or family history of similar complaints. Physical examination was unremarkable. In the local hospital, laboratory studies showed a hemoglobin level of 6.0g per deciliter (normal range, 11.5 to 15.5). After blood transfusion, an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and complete colonoscopy did not reveal any bleeding lesion. In our hospit

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: This study assessed whether a model incorporating clinical features and a polygenic score for ascending aortic diameter would improve diameter estimation and prediction of adverse thoracic aortic events over clinical features alone.
METHODS: Aortic diameter estimation models were built with a 1.1 million-variant polygenic score (AORTA Gene) and without it. Models were validated internally in 4394 UK Biobank participants and externally in 5469 individuals from Mass General Brigham (MGB) Biobank, 1298 from the Framingham Heart Study (FHS), and 610 from All of Us. Model fit

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Ectasia of the cornea can occur decades after penetrating keratoplasty (PK), especially in keratoconus eyes. The purpose of this study was to characterise ectasia after PK by morphological findings in anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT).
METHODS: In this retrospective, single-centre case series, 50 eyes of 32 patients with a history of PK at an average of 25±10 years earlier were included. The eyes were classified either as ectatic (n=35) or as non-ectatic (n=15). The main parameters included central corneal thickness (CCT), lowest corneal thickness at the

Purposes: Dilatation of cystic duct is very rare and had been classified as Todani type VI choledochal cyst. Choledochal cyst combined with dilatation of cystic duct is difficult to diagnose preoperatively. The purpose of this study is to report the rare variants and discuss the significance and laparoscopic management strategy in children. Methods: The subjects for this study were 10 consecutive patients with type VI choledochal cyst who had laparoscopic procedures at our institute between January 2009 and January 2023. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy, excision of the dilated cystic duct, and ch

BACKGROUND: Bowel dilation and bowel wall thickness are common prenatal ultrasound measurements for fetuses with gastroschisis. Data regarding antenatal sonographic bowel findings and postnatal outcomes are conflicting. Our objective was to evaluate the impact of in utero bowel measurements on perinatal outcomes in gastroschisis pregnancies.
METHODS: Retrospective cohort study of 116 pregnancies complicated by gastroschisis between 2011 and 2020. We reviewed ultrasounds documenting fetal bowel measurements. To evaluate the association of these measurements with antepartum and delivery outcome

INTRODUCTION: Esophageal strictures are a common condition, and pediatric surgeons confront them regularly. Despite being performed very frequently, there ared not studies that clearly identify prognostic factors for pediatric patients.
METHODS: Medical records of the children who were taken to esophageal dilatation due to strictures from January 2015 to December 2018 were reviewed. Statistical analysis was performed to establish prognostic factors.
RESULTS: Six hundred sixty-three procedures were performed in 111 patients. The majority of patients had antecedent of esophageal atresia 56%, c

OBJECTIVES: Endoscopic balloon dilatation (EBD) offers a safe and non-invasive surgical option for the treatment of subglottic stenosis. Patient selection is important to achieve good results and to detect which patients are more prone to the development of complications. The aim of this study was to determine predictors of postoperative problems and early complications in primary EBD surgeries.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was made of patients with acquired subglottic stenosis who were operated on with the EBD technique between January 2010 and December 2019 in the Otolaryngology-Head a

BACKGROUND: Vaginal stenosis (VS) is a common side effect of pelvic radiotherapy for gynecological cancer in women. It has a high incidence variability, likely due to unstandardized and subjective assessment methods. Furthermore, even though the worldwide standard treatment for VS is vaginal dilation, low compliance rates have been noted.
AIM: To evaluate the parameters used to diagnose VS and to assess whether the lack of an objective measure of VS hampers vaginal dilator use.
METHODS: A systematic review in accordance with the PRISMA reporting guidelines was conducted. PubMed, EMBASE, and

Dural ectasia, also known as meningocele of the optic nerve sheath, is a rare benign pathology. Magnetic resonance imaging has a great role in the diagnosis of this condition, which has nonspecific symptoms such as progressive blurred vision. It is observed as cerebrospinal fluid accumulation within the expanded nerve sheath around the optic nerve. Treatment is planned after differential diagnosis of other pathologies such as mass and inflammation in addition to diagnosis with magnetic resonance imaging. Medical treatment is usually sufficient, and surgical treatment is planned for progressive

BACKGROUND: Pneumosinus dilatans (PD) is a rare condition in which one or more paranasal sinuses are pathologically hyperaerated. Patients commonly present with an aesthetic complaint, however it has been associated with several serious conditions. The etiology is largely theoretical and the management remains unstandardized, potentially leading to missed diagnoses. This article aims to establish a presumptive classification scheme and management algorithm based on a comprehensive review of the literature.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic review of all available publications on the search

BACKGROUND: Congenital nasal pyriform aperture stenosis (CNPAS) is a rare condition that may occur alone or as part of a multi-formative syndrome. Management remains difficult. There is no specific treatment protocol. Traditional surgery would be anachronistic; a non-invasive or minimally invasive therapeutic option is required. However, the rarity of the disease and the infantile context render randomised clinical trials difficult.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present the case of a one-month-old Caucasian boy with CNPAS. He presented to the Emergency Department of the Bambino Gesù Pediatric Hospita

INTRODUCTION: Benign gastrointestinal strictures are common, and can be congenital or acquired (anastomotic, corrosive, induced by Crohn's disease or endoscopic treatments, etc.). Patients usually present with stricture-related symptoms such as vomiting, dysphagia, dyschezia, abdominal pain, which impair their quality of life. Endoscopic balloon dilation (EBD) is the first-line treatment for most of the benign strictures; however, long-term efficacy is suboptimal, and the recurrence rate can be up to 38%. Endoscopic incision (EI) was firstly reported for treatment of congenital membranous stri

Lone atrial fibrillation (AF) can cause functional mitral regurgitation (MR), commonly referred to as "atrial functional MR (AFMR)." This type of MR has recently received much attention as an important cause of heart failure, and it represents a considerable therapeutic target in heart failure patients with AF. Mitral annular dilatation due to left atrial (LA) dilatation can be recognized as an original cause of AFMR, whereas the exact cascade of AFMR etiologies has not been established. AFMR is typically classified as Carpentier type I, and is likely to have a central jet. In contrast, a prop

BACKGROUND: A multidisciplinary urinary tract dilation (UTD) classification system was published in 2014 to standardize definitions and renal/bladder ultrasound image interpretation.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate intra- and inter-rater reliability of this system on postnatal RBUS.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Renal/bladder US of 60 infants (<12 months) with urinary tract dilation were anonymized, retrospectively reviewed and scored twice using the UTD classification system by a pediatric urologist and four pediatric radiologists. Exams included supine and prone images of each kidney. Raters recorded the

The main pancreatic duct can become dilated in a number of conditions. We describe a patient with gross dilatation of the main pancreatic duct without evidence of causative underlying pathology suggesting congenital dilatation of the pancreatic duct. A 36-year-old man presented with signs of intestinal obstruction and a history of surgery for congenital pyloric stenosis. Incidental findings on CT showed a massively dilated main pancreatic duct. On MRI there was no duct irregularity or solid mural nodule, making a main duct intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm unlikely. Endoscopic ultrasound
