Recurrent dysplasia epiphysealis hemimelica: a case report and review of the literature.

This paper presents a case of Dysplasia Epiphysealis Hemimelica that recurred 3 months following the initial surgical intervention. The recurrence was notably characterized by increased pain, limping, and significant ankle stiffness compared to the initial presentation. Histopathological analysis of the recurrence revealed immature fibrocartilaginous tissue, nodular proliferation of collagenous fibrous tissue, and cartilage fragments, accompanied by a foreign-body granulomatous reaction. A review of the literature suggests that recurrence of this condition is closely linked to incomplete surgi

A case of tattoo-related sarcoidosis with generalised lymph node enlargement.

We report the case of a 39-year-old man who was admitted for evaluation of enlarged lymph nodes. A lymph node biopsy showed CD68- and 1α-hydroxylase-positive non-caseating epithelioid granuloma. Sarcoidosis was diagnosed because of mildly elevated angiotensin-converting enzyme levels and hypercalcemia. We noted tattoos (which were created 10 years earlier) on the left upper arm and forearm. It was hypothesised that some component in the tattoos had triggered a systemic foreign body reaction by macrophages, resulting in sarcoidosis. Treatment with steroids was ineffective, but additional treatm

Advanced strategies to thwart foreign body response to implantable devices.

Mitigating the foreign body response (FBR) to implantable medical devices (IMDs) is critical for successful long-term clinical deployment. The FBR is an inevitable immunological reaction to IMDs, resulting in inflammation and subsequent fibrotic encapsulation. Excessive fibrosis may impair IMDs function, eventually necessitating retrieval or replacement for continued therapy. Therefore, understanding the implant design parameters and their degree of influence on FBR is pivotal to effective and long lasting IMDs. This review gives an overview of FBR as well as anti-FBR strategies. Furthermore,

Osteolytic Lesion of the First Metatarsal After Catfish Spine Injury: A Case Report.

CASE: A 17-year-old adolescent boy complained of plantar pain at the first metatarsal 2 months after a catfish spine injury. Imaging was consistent with a retained foreign body, and surrounding osteolysis was concerning for osteomyelitis. He underwent surgical debridement and was found to have inflammation and necrosis, apparently caused by catfish spine venom. CONCLUSION: Although osteolytic lesions are commonly attributed to infection or tumor, in the situation of venomous injuries, osteolysis can be a sequela of the severe local inflammatory reaction due to the toxins. Debridement is vital

A case of small bowel obstruction due to infection with Bolbosoma sp. (Acanthocephala: Polymorphidae).

A case of small bowel obstruction caused by Bolbosoma sp. infection is reported. A 27-year-old woman admitted with abdominal pain was diagnosed as small bowel obstruction. Laparoscopic surgery revealed induration in jejunum at ca. 120 cm distal to the ligament of Treiz, attributed to a band connecting the serosa to the ascending mesocolon. Resected band contained an acanthocephalan accompanying foreign body reaction with abscess formation. The parasite belonged to the genus Bolbosoma, of which identification was made by DNA sequence analysis. This is the eighth case of Bolbosoma infection in h

Idiopathic orofacial granulomatosis with varied clinical presentation.

Orofacial granulomatosis is a granulomatous disease of orofacial region, which can occur for a variety of reasons. The clinical features are highly variable and sometimes so insidious that signs and symptoms are not frequently severe to cause alarm. The lips are most commonly involved with persistent/recurrent swelling. The medical history is very important as Crohn's disease and sarcoidosis can present oral manifestation. Other causes like mycobacterial infection, foreign body reaction, fungal infection, and allergy were excluded with further investigation to establish diagnosis. Here and we

Temporomandibular joint reconstruction after failed teflon-proplast implant: case report and literature review.

Multiple reports document that a foreign-body giant cell reaction forms around Proplast-Teflon temporomandibular joint (TMJ) implants. This results in destruction of surrounding bone and instability of the implants. This case presents a patient whose Proplast-Teflon TMJ implants became displaced into her middle cranial fossa. The staged reconstruction of this patient is described, including removal of the TMJ implants, reconstruction of the defect, concomitant orthodontic treatment and final reconstruction with TMJ Concepts. This process involved a multidisciplinary approach between several me

Paraffinoma of the knee.

We present the case of a 90-year-old man with a swollen, painful knee and a history of paraffin injections. Radiography showed soft tissue streaky and nodular calcifications without erosions. MR imaging showed globular areas of low signal intensity on T1- and T2-weighted images which became even more hypointense on STIR sequences, and an infiltrative hypointense region containing areas of high signal on T1-weighted, T2-weighted and STIR images. Biopsy confirmed soft tissue foreign body granulomata, fibrous reaction and areas of inflammation. We believe this to be the first report of MR imaging

Sudden death caused by giant cell myocarditis following coronary artery bypass.

An unusual case of idiopathic giant cell myocarditis (GCM) is described. The patient had a 5-year history of stable and unstable angina, poorly controlled by medical treatment. He underwent a successful coronary artery bypass, but 2 months later died suddenly at home. A coroner's autopsy revealed isolated GCM. This newly described possible association between the surgery and the condition is discussed and the pertinent literature is reviewed. We suggest that the list of causes of GCM in postoperative patients should also include foreign-body reaction. Our findings support the view that myocard…

[Study of some physical and biological properties of an endodontic sealer composed of calcium hydroxide].

The authors present a study of the physical and biological properties of a new endodontic cement known as Sealapex. In its composition the presence of calcium hydroxide is introduced in order to induce calcification of the periapical tissue. Our results using glass round cover slips implanted on the subcutaneous tissue of mice indicated a persistent foreign body reaction (60 days). The physical properties studied compared to N-Rickert ciment indicated, a decreased leakage. Adhesivity tests didn't give us significant values. Laboratorial studies and clinical trials are necessary to a complete a

[Histopathophysiology of Gout].

Despite being a frequent cause of arthritis and bone erosions, the underlying cellular and subcellular reaction in gout is insufficiently understood. The inflammasome as intracellular sensor for crystals plays an important role, notably resulting in interleukin (IL)-1 production. Morphologically, hyperplasia of the synovial membrane with joint effusion, along with fibrinogen deposition and influx of neutrophils and lymphocytes are observed. Extracellular NET formation by neutrophils is involved in the regulation of inflammatory tissue reaction. Furthermore, the release of IL-10 and tumor necro

Unraveling the Enigma of Gossypiboma: A Series of 14 Cases Highlighting the Prevalence, Root Causes, and Outcomes in Resource-Limited Settings.

BACKGROUND: Gossypiboma or textiloma is the unintentional retention of textile material in a patient's body, often occurring during abdominal surgery and involving surgical sponges. The body may respond to this foreign body with an exudative inflammatory reaction or an aseptic fibrotic reaction, encapsulating the cotton material and forming a mass. This rare but dramatic event can lead to life-threatening complications, and due to legal and ethical concerns, few publications exist. There were no published papers regarding this issue in our nation (Yemen). This study aims to report the retained

Zwitterionic Topological Hydrogel Coatings for Robust Mitigation of the Foreign Body Response.

Implantable medical devices are prone to foreign body response (FBR) during long-term use. Zwitterionic materials have attracted significant attention for their excellent antifouling properties and have been applied to implantable devices to enhance immunocompatibility. However, in vivo studies have yielded inconsistent results regarding their effectiveness as anti-FBR surface coatings. In this study, three types of zwitterionic poly(2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine) (PMPC) coatings, including PMB30 copolymers, polymer brushes constructed via ATRP (atom transfer radical polymerization)

Revolutionizing care: Recent innovations and the future of treating implant-induced infections and inflammation.

Medical implants are crucial for restoring function and regenerating injured organs and tissues. However, beyond design, material properties and placement, the risk of a foreign body reaction (FBR) upon interaction between the host immune system and the biomaterial, as well as the risk of infection at the implant site significantly influence treatment success. FBR has been confirmed to severely affect the integration of medical implants into the host tissue, often leading to therapy failure. This has led to the engineering of several novel biomaterials to improve the biocompatibility and integ

Immunoinflammatory Mechanisms and Biocompatibility of Bioactive Dental Biomaterials: From Fundamental Insights to Clinical Translation.

Biomaterials are substances designed to interact with living systems for diagnostic, therapeutic, or regenerative purposes. Their clinical success is governed not only by their bulk physicochemical properties but more importantly, by their surface properties and interfacial characteristics, which regulate early protein adsorption and subsequently downstream cellular responses. Biocompatibility, therefore, extends far beyond the absence of toxicity, encompassing the ability of a material to modulate the foreign body response, promote tissue repair, and tissue integration. Understanding these me

Decoding fibrotic encapsulation in plastic surgery implants: From biological mechanisms to precision interventions frontiers.

Mitigating fibrotic encapsulation around implants is critical to ensuring the long-term success of implant-based procedures in plastic surgery. Fibrous capsule formation is a pathological foreign body reaction (FBR) that not only causes capsular contracture and implant failure but also creates a permissive microenvironment for bacterial colonization, thereby increasing the risk of infection. These adverse outcomes may ultimately necessitate implant removal or replacement, significantly compromising surgical results and patient satisfaction. Therefore, a thorough understanding of the mechanisms

Strategies for extended lifetime of implantable intraperitoneal insulin catheters.

Implantable insulin infusion systems using the intra-peritoneal route have dramatically changed the management of diabetes paving the way toward the realization of the potential "holy grail" of a fully implantable artificial pancreas. However, the wear duration of delivery catheters is compromised by the foreign body-mediated immune response. Both occlusion material present at the distal catheter tip end and fibrotic encapsulation surrounding the catheters influence the controlled and precise delivery of insulin, which eventually leads to the need for surgical intervention. The novel part of t
