Genetic testing is an integral component in the workup of male infertility as genetic conditions may be responsible for up to 15% of all cases. Currently, three genetic tests are commonly performed and recommended by major urologic associations: karyotype analysis (KA), Y-chromosome microdeletion testing, and CFTR mutation testing. Despite widespread adoption of these tests, an etiology for infertility remains elusive in up to 80% of cases. Recent work has identified intriguing new targets for genetic testing which may soon see clinical relevance. This review will discuss the indications and t

The past two decades of research have demonstrated that Tourette's syndrome (TS) is likely to be more genetically heterogeneous than initially appreciated. Nonetheless, important progress toward the understanding of genetic influences in TS has been made by the combination of family and twin studies, segregation analyses, parametric and nonparametric linkage analyses, and association studies. The identification of genetic factors involved in TS will have important implications for clinical research. Once it is possible to stratify patients meaningfully with respect to known genetic markers, a

BACKGROUND: Primary care physicians face multiple challenges in integrating clinical cancer genetics into routine care. Most studies of genomic medicine come from countries with well-developed primary healthcare systems, while research on the integration of clinical genetics in primary care remains limited in Japan and Asia. In Japan, where family medicine is still emerging as a specialty, no prior studies have examined Japanese family physicians' engagement with clinical cancer genetics, including genetic counseling and referral. This study investigates Japanese family physicians' knowledge,

Research suggests that people who have relatively secure attachment styles tend to experience better mental and physical health across the lifespan (Pietromonaco & Beck, 2019; X. Zhang et al., 2022). Despite the growing body of research linking attachment styles to health outcomes, relatively little is known about why or how these associations arise. The present study analyzed data from 1,377 older adult twins, who completed measures of their general and relationship-specific attachment styles and five health assessments-depressive symptoms, self-reported mental and physical health, physical i

Background: Lymphedema is a debilitating and progressive clinical entity characterized by abnormal accumulation of lymph and fluid in the extracellular space. Most of the cases in western population are related to cancer treatment. Research on cancer-related lymphedema (CRL) is mounting for potential risk factors associated to disease, treatment, or patient. However, only a few cancer survivors with the same risk factors will develop lymphedema, giving rise to the hypothesis that inherited genetic susceptibility may play a role in CRL pathophysiology. This systematic review aimed to identify,

With the advancement of medicine, more and more researchers have turned their attention to the study of fetal genetic diseases in recent years. However, it is still a challenge to detect genetic diseases in the fetus, especially in an area lacking access to healthcare. The existing research primarily focuses on using teenagers' or adults' face information to screen for genetic diseases, but there are no relevant directions on disease detection using fetal facial information. To fill the vacancy, we designed a two-stage ensemble learning model based on sonography, Fgds-EL, to identify genetic d

Genetic research, techniques, and knowledge have rapidly expanded in the last two decades with the completion of the Human Genome Project and other major advances in discovery research and diagnostic technologies. Although these developments have obvious potential, they also raise significant challenges related to programs for the actual delivery of useful genetic testing and services. This challenge is particularly acute in rural and remote areas, where lack of access to genetic services is pervasive resulting in significant inequities in access and availability of services. Huntington diseas…

This review provides an historical and personal perspective on the discovery of genetic causes for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). Extraordinary insights by physicians who initially detailed remarkable and varied manifestations of the disorder, collaboration among multidisciplinary teams with skills in clinical diagnostics and molecular genetics, and hard work by scores of trainees solved the etiologic riddle of HCM and unexpectedly demonstrated mutations in sarcomere protein genes as the cause of disease. In addition to celebrating 20 years of genetic research in HCM, this article serves a…

Pharmacogenetics can enhance cardiovascular disease (CVD) treatment by tailoring drug therapy to genetic profiles and minimising trial-and-error approaches. Genetic variability influences responses to common CVD drugs, including antiplatelet drugs (clopidogrel and aspirin), anticoagulants (warfarin), statins, and antihypertensives (ACE inhibitors and β-blockers). Understanding genetic polymorphisms can improve efficacy and safety. Despite this progress, further research is needed to optimise pharmacogenomic applications and advance personalised medicine to improve CVD treatment outcomes.

Developmental dyslexia was until recently considered to belong solely in the domain of educational psychology. With the advent of better theories on language and reading, and better methods for assessing the structure and function of living human brains and for determining genetic transmission, dyslexia is now poised to become a focal concern of cognitive neuroscience, neurology, and genetic research. Still unresolved are questions relating to how much a reading disability represents a normal variation or a separate pathological entity, and whether the cognitive disorder is primarily cognitive…

Despite the evidence for genetic factors in schizophrenia, the underlying hereditary defect is unknown. The author reviews recent advances in genetic research methodologies and discusses their strengths and limitations. He concludes that in the face of genetic heterogeneity current models of segregation analysis are not likely to unravel the mode of inheritance of schizophrenia. The author underscores the potential contribution of both molecular genetics (as a means to generate DNA markers) and studies with biologic vulnerability traits to identifying and quantitating the genetic component in …

Advances in animal models of retinoblastoma have accelerated research in this field, aiding in understanding tumor progression and assessing therapeutic modalities. The distinct pattern of mutations and specific location of this unique intraocular tumor have paved the way for two types of models- those based on genetic mutations, and xenograft models. Retinoblastoma gene knockouts with an additional loss of p107, p130, p53 and using promoters of Nestin, Chx10, and Pax6 genes show histological phenotypic changes close to the human form of retinoblastoma. Conditional knockout in specific layers
