PURPOSE: To describe the tear function and ocular surface disorders in a patient with ectrodactyly-ectodermal dysplasia-clefting (EEC) syndrome.
METHODS: Routine ophthalmic examinations were performed, including slit-lamp biomicroscopy, anterior segment photography including transillumination photos of the lids, Schirmer tests I and II, tear film break-up time (BUT) assessment, corneal fluorescein staining, DR-1 tear film lipid layer interferometry, and tear evaporation rate measurements.
RESULTS: Slit-lamp examination revealed conjunctival hyperemia, superficial punctate keratopathy, and co

Complex facio-audio-symphalangism syndrome. an autosomal recessive type?: This report describes a new case of facio-audio-symphalangism syndrome in a 32-year-old female patient from a consanguineous family. She had a severely mentally retarded and anophthalmic sister. These associations might be coincidental or demonstrate genetic heterogeneity in this syndrome We note the diagnostic features of the case, discuss the novel association with consanguinity and highlight the possible heterogeneity of the facio-audio-symphalangism syndrome.

A case of frontometaphyseal dysplasia (Gorlin-Cohen syndrome) in a child is described. The boy showed characteristic musculoskeletal changes, and had bilateral symptomatic cavovarus deformities of the feet. Surgical management of the foot deformities and the outcome are discussed.

We report on a girl with congenital scalp and acral reduction limb defects, consistent with the diagnosis of Adams-Oliver syndrome. The presence of constriction rings makes the limb anomalies in this case similar to those seen in the amniotic band disruption sequence. Vascular disruption--with or without secondary amniotic rupture--may be responsible for the observed anomalies. Therefore we believe that the present observation adds further evidence for the hypothesis that the Adams-Oliver syndrome is a vascular disruption sequence.

In this report we illustrate the variable expression and the different modes of inheritance in Larsen syndrome. The important contribution of the metacarpophalangeal profile pattern analysis in the final diagnosis is emphasized.

In this report we present the first case of Proteus syndrome associated with nephrogenic diabetes insipidus. The case is a 9-month-old girl, with macrodactyly of both feet and left hand, syndactyly of the 3rd and 4th fingers of the left hand, soft tissue masses in the paravertebral and gluteal regions, and a hyperpigmented epidermal nevus with hyperkeratosis on the left half of the body.

A patient with a proximal deletion of the long arm of chromosome 4 is presented. This patient and 6 others previously described appear to have similar findings of moderate to severe developmental delay, small size, small hands and feet, and similar facial appearance. These patients appear to be quite different from those with more distal 4q deletions.

The ability to make a prenatal diagnosis of Meckel syndrome (encephalocele, polydactyly, and polycystic kidney) by ultrasound is described. Three cases are detailed; in 2 of these the diagnosis was made at 18 and 36 weeks' gestation, respectively. In case 1 Meckel syndrome was identified by the presence of oligohydramnios, microcephaly, and enlarged cerebral ventricles. In case 2 oligohydramnios was associated with an encephalocele, bilateral renal enlargement, and a polydactyly. In case 3 the diagnosis was excluded in a fetus at risk. The usefulness of ultrasound in making this diagnosis is d

We report the anatomical variations of the limbs in eight infants with the trisomy-18 syndrome that were dissected and studied in detail. In each case, the upper limbs showed defects which further define the specific influence of this aneuploidy on the development of its preaxial (radial) component, and the tendency towards reduction defects. Abnormalities included muscle variations concentrated along the radial margin of the forearm and hand, the absence of the definitive musculocutaneous nerve in all of the limbs, and reductions of the radial artery in four of the bodies. Pathogenetic mechan

The Dyggve-Melchior-Clausen syndrome is an inherited disorder of skeletal development characterized by short-trunked dwarfism, mental retardation, and a distinctive pattern of bone changes. The radiographic features seen in the 15 patients described in this report include platyspondyly with notched end plates of the vertebral bodies, small ilia with broad, frequently lacy crests, lateral displacement of the capital femoral epiphyses, and accessory ossification centers of the first metacarpals, proximal and middle phalanges. Cytological and biochemical data, notably a normal sulfate incorporati

INTRODUCTION: Pathogenic DNA variants in the GLI-Kruppel family member 3 (GLI3) gene are known to cause multiple syndromes: for example, Greig syndrome, preaxial polydactyly-type 4 (PPD4) and Pallister-Hall syndrome. Out of these, Pallister-Hall is a different entity, but the distinction between Greig syndrome and PPD4 is less evident. Using latent class analysis (LCA), our study aimed to investigate the correlation between reported limb anomalies and the reported GLI3 variants in these GLI3-mediated polydactyly syndromes. We identified two subclasses of limb anomalies that relate to the under

Cutaneous findings are common in Costello syndrome, but have not been extensively reviewed in the dermatology literature. We present the cutaneous and histopathologic findings from two cases of Costello syndrome and review previously described cutaneous features of this syndrome. Both patients had manifestations of Costello syndrome with thick, lax skin on the dorsal aspects of hands and feet, deep palmar and plantar creases, curly hair, hyperkeratoses, acanthosis nigricans, papillomas, and multiple pigmented lesions. One patient had multiple syringomas on the forearms, a finding not previousl

Familial spastic paraplegia (FSP) with severe muscular atrophy of hands and feet is exceptional. Autosomal dominant forms were initially described by Silver in 1966. We report two cases, from the same Tunisian family, presenting FSP with severe amyotrophy of the hands. A brother and his sister, aged respectively 37 and 36 years old, presented practically the same clinical picture. Their parents were cousins. The female patient was hospitalized. Both patients developed gait disorders around the age of three years. Muscular atrophy of the hands arose much later, around the age of 20 years. The n

BACKGROUND: Hecht and Beals in 1969 described an autosomal dominant syndrome characterised by severe restriction of mouth opening, camptodactyly, shortness of leg muscles and, as a direct consequence, foot deformities.
CASE REPORT: A case of a 4-year-old girl affected by this unusual syndrome is described. The patient underwent bilateral resection of coronoid processes by intraoral approach. An intraoral device was used in the immediate postoperative period in order to maintain mouth opening. Once at home, the patient has had, for six months, phisiokinesic therapy by means of a modified Darci
