Twenty patients (28 eyes) with primary keratoconus of stages I-II (Amsler) were operated using photorefraction keratectomy (PRK) supplemented by phototherapeutic keratectomy (PRK). The effect of rigid contact lenses on the course of keratocone during different stages is studied. A total of 121 patients (234 eyes) aged 11 to 49 years were examined. Early onset of keratocone is associated with its more rapid progress; the evolution of the disease from the initial to terminal stage takes 7 years with lenses and 4 without them; the progress of keratocone from one stage to another with contact correction takes more than 2 years versus less than 1.5 years without correction. Rigid contact lenses inhibit the progress of keratocone only at the initial stage of the disease.

A family with keratoconus combined with corneal granular dystrophy is reported. The patients are a mother and her two sons. The mother and her elder son have both keratoconus and corneal granular dystrophy; the younger son has keratoconus. Thus, the keratoconus in this family is thought to be of autosomal dominant inheritance. These familial cases suggest that the gene loci for both diseases localize in proximity or have a close relationship.

We carried out a retrospective study to evaluate the relationship between vitreous cavity length, graft size, and final spherical equivalent refraction after penetrating keratoplasty (PK) for keratoconus. We found a straight-line relationship between vitreous cavity length and spherical equivalent for a one-surgeon series using the same technique throughout.
