Lactic acid bacteria and human health.

Although claims for health and nutritional benefits have been made for lactic acid bacteria in fermented dairy products for nearly a century, the nutritional and therapeutic value of these organisms is still controversial. This article will review the scientific basis of these claims. There are numerous studies showing fermentation of food with lactobacilli increase the quantity, availability, digestibility, and assimilability of nutrients. The basis for this conclusion comes from direct measurements of vitamin synthesis and from increased feed efficiency when fermented products are fed to ani

Karyotyping and population genetics in Cold War Mexico: Armendares's and Lisker's characterization of child and indigenous populations, 1960s-1980s.

This paper focuses on geneticists Salvador Armendares's and Rubén Lisker's studies from the 1960s to the 1980s, to explore how their work fits into the post-1945 human biological studies, and also how the populations they studied, child and indigenous, can be considered laboratories of knowledge production. This paper describes how populations were considered for different purposes: scientific inquiry, standardization of medical practices, and production or application of medicines. Through the narrative of the different trajectories and collaborations between Armendares and Lisker, this paper

Effects of ferulic acid on the growth performance, antioxidant capacity, and intestinal development of piglets with intrauterine growth retardation.

Neonates with intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) are prone to suffer from delayed postnatal growth and development during the early stages of life. Ferulic acid (FA) is a phenolic compound that is abundantly present in fruits and vegetables and has various health benefits. Hence, we explored whether FA supplementation could favorably affect the growth performance, antioxidant capacity, and intestinal development of piglets with IUGR. In total, eight normal-birth-weight (NBW) piglets and 16 piglets with IUGR (age, 7 d) were assigned to be fed either basic formula milk (NBW and IUGR groups,

Agreement between indirect calorimetry and traditional tests of lactose malabsorption.

BACKGROUND: Lactose malabsorption occurs frequently and the variable consequent intolerance may seriously impair quality of life. No reliable and convenient test method is in routine clinical practice. A recent animal study showed that the respiratory quotient changed significantly after ingestion of sucrose and lactose in naturally lactase-deficient rats. AIMS: This exploratory study evaluated the relevance of monitoring the respiratory quotient after lactose ingestion to detect malabsorption. METHODS: Healthy volunteers were identified and classified lactose absorbers and malabsorbers by a

A novel acid-stable, acid-active beta-galactosidase potentially suited to the alleviation of lactose intolerance.

Extracellular beta-galactosidase produced by a strain of Aspergillus niger van Tiegh was purified to homogeneity using a combination of gel filtration, ion-exchange, chromatofocusing, and hydrophobic interaction chromatographies. The enzyme displayed a temperature optimum of 65 degrees C and a low pH optimum of between 2.0 and 4.0. The monomeric glycosylated enzyme displayed a molecular mass of 129 kDa and an isoelectric point of 4.7. Protein database similarity searching using mass spectrometry-derived sequence data indicate that the enzyme shares homology with a previously sequenced A. niger

Correlation between symptoms developed after the oral ingestion of 50 g lactose and results of hydrogen breath testing for lactose intolerance.

BACKGROUND: Lactase deficiency is a common condition responsible for various abdominal symptoms. Lactose hydrogen breath test is currently the gold standard in diagnosing lactose intolerance. AIM: To assess sensitivity and specificity of symptoms developed after oral lactose challenge. METHODS: Intensity of nausea, abdominal pain, borborygmi, bloating and diarrhoea was recorded every 15 min up to 3 h after ingestion of 50 g lactose in patients with positive (i.e. breath H2-concentration > or =20 p.p.m. above baseline) and negative lactose hydrogen breath test. RESULTS: Between July 1999 and

Extrauterine growth restriction in preterm infants: importance of optimizing nutrition in neonatal intensive care units.

Extrauterine growth restriction in preterm infants secondary to suboptimal nutrition is a major problem in neonatal intensive care units. Evidence is emerging that early growth deficits have long-term adverse effects, including short stature and poor neurodevelopmental outcomes. The parenteral route of feeding is essential to maintain nutritional integrity before successful transition to the enteral route of feeding is achieved. Nevertheless, early initiation of enteral feeding in sub-nutritional trophic quantity is vital for promoting gut motility and bile secretion, inducing lactase activity

A retrospective assessment of the clinical value of jejunal disaccharidase analysis.

BACKGROUND: The measurement of jejunal disaccharidases is used by several gastroenterologists when investigating suspected small-bowel disease. The clinical value of this analysis is assessed. METHOD: The histology and disaccharidase results in 1585 jejunal biopsy specimens were reviewed retrospectively. RESULTS: Disaccharidase and histology results concurred in most cases (72%). However, disaccharidases were an insensitive indicator of small-bowel disease: low levels were found in only 65% of coeliac patients with villous atrophy, 15% of patients with giardiasis, and 6% of patients with vil

Small intestinal glucoamylase deficiency and starch malabsorption: a newly recognized alpha-glucosidase deficiency in children.

To determine the prevalence of short polymers of glucose and starch malabsorption caused by small intestinal glucoamylase deficiency in children with chronic diarrhea, we studied small bowel biopsy specimens from 511 children (aged 1 month to 9 years) with chronic diarrhea evaluated at 54 medical centers. Glucoamylase and disaccharidase (lactase, sucrase, maltase, and palatinase) enzyme assays were performed. Of the 511 children, 15 had glucoamylase deficiency. Six who had significant small intestinal mucosal injury and disaccharidase deficiencies were defined as having secondary glucoamylase

Klotho protein and insulin resistance.

Klotho was initially identified as an anti-ageing protein expressed mainly in renal distal tubular cells and the choroid plexus. The Klotho family comprises several members, including α-Klotho (αKl), β-Klotho (βKl), Klotho-LPH related protein (KLPH; lactase-phlorizin hydrolase), and Klotho-related protein (KlrP), which perform a multitude of functions related to various physiological processes. The effects of Klotho on various ageing-related and renal diseases, such as its antiapoptotic effects, ability to reduce oxidative stress, anti-inflammatory effects, and other functions, have extensivel

Intestinal Disaccharidase Deficiency in Adults: Evaluation and Treatment.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Disaccharidase deficiency in adults causes carbohydrate malabsorption, resulting in symptoms which significantly overlap with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). This article discusses the diagnosis and treatment of disaccharidase deficiency within the context of recent literature. RECENT FINDINGS: Disaccharidase deficiency in adults is more common than previously thought, which includes lactase, sucrase, maltase and isomaltase enzymes. Deficiency in disaccharidases, which are produced by the intestinal brush border, will interfere with the breakdown and absorption of carbohydr

Regression of lactose malabsorption in coeliac patients after receiving a gluten-free diet.

OBJECTIVE: In a recent study by our group, it was shown that a large proportion of patients with lactose malabsorption and with no bacterial overgrowth are affected by silent coeliac disease (CD). Our aim was to evaluate the effect of a gluten-free diet on lactose malabsorption assessed using the hydrogen lactose breath test (LBT) and also the relationship with normalization of duodenal biopsies in coeliac patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Fifteen patients (11 F, 4 M; mean age 35.8+/-6) affected by CD with a positive LBT and negative glucose breath test were enrolled. All were started on a glut

Does small intestinal atresia affect epithelial protein expression in human newborns?

OBJECTIVES: Bowel segments distal to a congenital intestinal obstruction have been suggested to be immature. In other words, luminal components such as amniotic fluid (before birth) and/or enteral nutrition (after birth) may be required to activate intestinal epithelial protein expression, thereby influencing epithelial differentiation. We investigated cell-type-specific protein expression proximal and distal to jejunal and ileal atresias in human newborns. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We immunohistochemically studied intestinal tissue specimens of 16 newborns who had undergone surgery for jejunal o

Vitamin A deficiency leads to severe functional disturbance of the intestinal epithelium enzymes associated with diarrhoea and increased bacterial translocation in gnotobiotic rats.

A disturbance of the integrity of the intestinal epithelium with an increased risk for bacterial translocation is one of the suggested factors underlying the increased incidence of infections and septicaemia during vitamin A deficiency. In the present study the effects of vitamin A deficiency on the enzymic activity of enterocytes in response to bacterial colonization with a non-pathogenic Escherichia coli strain were studied in monocolonized and conventional Wistar rats. The monocolonized, but not the conventional, vitamin A-deficient rats had markedly reduced weight compared to their pair-fe

Celiac sprue among US military veterans: associated disorders and clinical manifestations.

The present study aimed to describe the clinical manifestations of celiac sprue related to malnutrition and to analyze the associations between celiac sprue and other diagnoses. A case-control study compared the occurrence of comorbid diagnoses in case and control subjects with and without celiac sprue, respectively. All patients with a primary or secondary diagnosis of celiac sprue (ICD-579.0) who were discharged from hospitals of the Department of Veterans Affairs between 1986 and 1995 were selected as case subjects. In a multivariate logistic regression analysis, the occurrence of celiac di

Lactose malabsorption is associated with early signs of mental depression in females: a preliminary report.

Lactose malabsorption is characterized by a deficiency of mucosal lactase. As a consequence, lactose reaches the colon where it is broken down by bacteria to short-chain fatty acids, CO2, and H2. Bloating, cramps, osmotic diarrhea, and other symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome are the consequence and can be seen in about 50% of lactose malabsorbers. Having made the observation that females with lactose malabsorption not only showed signs of irritable bowel syndrome but also signs of premenstrual syndrome and mental depression, it was of interest to establish whether a statistical correlation

Duodenal brush-border mucosal glucose transport and enzyme activities in aging man and effect of bacterial contamination of the small intestine.

Duodenal biopsies were collected from 38 subjects (24 female and 14 male) ranging in age from 55 to 91 years. Evidence of bacterial contamination of the small bowel (BCSB) was sought at the same time by bacterial culture of duodenal aspirates and by hydrogen and [14C]glycocholic acid breath tests; subjects were considered to be positive for BCSB if any one of the three tests was abnormal. Biopsies were analyzed for six brush-border membrane enzyme activities: maltase, sucrase, lactase, alkaline phosphatase, leucine aminopeptidase, and alpha-glucosidase. Analysis of covariance with age as the c
