Penile and scrotal lymphedema is characterized by an abnormal retention of fluid in the subcutaneous tissue of the penis and scrotum, due to a deficiency in lymphatic drainage, causing edema, pain, dysuria and sexual dysfunction. The present report describes a patient with a giant penile and scrotal lymphedema after syphilitic infection, treated by excision of all the compromised skin and subcutaneous cellular tissue, with primary reconstruction with partial skin autograft and flap rotation. Literature review showed good functional results (erections and ejaculation) with the use of techniques

Unusual angiomatous or lymphangiomatous vascular malformations are rarely seen. One of them is lymphangioma (LA), which is a rare benign lymphovascular abnormality. LA is usually seen in the types of circumscriptum (or capillary), cavernous and cystic. Here, we report a unique case of LA with a patchy appearance. The patient presented due to unusual symptoms and eccentric clinical manifestation of the lesion. Here, we present a new lymphatic entity which was diagnosed as LA with its clinical, radiological and pathological findings. Written informed consent of the patient was obtained for this

BACKGROUND: Eccrine angiomatous hamartoma (EAH) is recognized as a vascular hamartoma composed of abnormal proliferation of blood vessels and eccrine glands.
OBJECTIVE: We sought to investigate the immunohistochemical results of D2-40 and Prox1 in EAH in order to gain further insight into its histogenesis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We collected 21 cases of EAH diagnosed in a dermatology department. Immunohistochemical staining of D2-40 and Prox1 was performed on all cases.
RESULTS: Prox1 was universally positive in the endothelial cells of proliferated vessels in all cases. D2-40 was universal

We describe a patient wih subacute cor pulmonale caused by tumor emboli in the lungs. A 64-year-old female suffering from a subacute progressive cough and shortness of breathing died of severe pulmonary hypertension seven days after admission. Neither chest CT scans nor lung perfusion scintigraphy showed any abnormal findings. Microscopic examination after an autopsy revealed diffuse intravascular tumor emboli occluding not only the small pulmonary arteries and arterioles, but also the lymphatic vessels, which were suggested to be metastases of a breast carcinoma resected five years previously

A patient with polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) is reported in whom, at the time of diagnosis, the number of lymphocytes in peripheral blood and bone marrow was normal. Lymphocytic infiltration typical of PMR was detected in renal and muscle biopsy specimens, and a liver fine-needle aspirate contained an abnormal lymphocytic infiltration, probably leukaemic. The number of lymphocytes gradually increased in bone marrow and peripheral blood until, almost 5 years after PMR had been diagnosed, a typical picture of chronic lymphatic leukaemia (CLL) was observable. The significance of the reported combi

The yellow nail syndrome, a combination of yellow discolouration of and dystrophic changes in the nails, pleural effusions and lymphedema, is thought to be relatively rare; to date 44 cases have been reported. Of a further three patients with this syndrome, one had all three features, one had the yellow nails alone and the other had pleural effusions and lymphedema without classic nail changes. Each had recurrent lower respiratory tract infections; and of all 47, chronic pulmonary infections occurred in approximately one quarter and were frequently associated with chronic sinus infections. OBJECTIVES: At our institution, in vivo facial nerve mapping (FNM) is used during vascular anomaly (VAN) surgeries involving the facial nerve (FN) to create an FN map and prevent injury. During mapping, FN anatomy seemed to vary with VAN type. This study aimed to characterize FN branching patterns compared to published FN anatomy and VAN type.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study of surgically relevant facial nerve anatomy.
METHODS: VAN patients (n = 67) with FN mapping between 2005 and 2018 were identified. Results included VAN type, FN relationship to VAN, FNM image with branch pattern, and s

BACKGROUND: Chronic hydrocele is the most common manifestation of bancroftian filariasis, an endemic disease in 80 countries. In a prospective study, we evaluated the occurrence of intrascrotal lymphangiectasia, gross appearance/consistency of the testis, and the efficacy of complete excision of hydrocele sac in patients living in a bancroftian filariasis endemic area who underwent hydrocelectomy at the Center for Teaching, Research and Tertiary Referral for Bancroftian Filariasis (NEPAF).
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: A total of 968 patients with uni- or bilateral filarial hydrocele (Group

Microdeletion syndromes are rare chromosomal abnormalities causing diverse clinical features due to gene dosage imbalances. Deletions in chromosome 17q23.3 have been linked to neurodevelopmental and growth disorders, although the genotype-phenotype correlations remain unclear. An eight-month-old male baby presented with short stature, low-set ears, cardiac anomalies, and multiple congenital malformations. He was born via C-section due to intrauterine growth restriction and exhibited craniofacial dysmorphism, lymphatic vessel dysplasia, micropenis, undescended testes, atrial septal defect, and

Yellow nail syndrome (YNS) is a rare disease of unknown etiology that is characterized by varying degrees of pulmonary manifestations, lymphedema, and yellow discoloration of the nails. Herein, we report the efficacy of oral terbinafine and topical minoxidil in treating the associated nail abnormalities of YNS in a 66-year-old woman. The patient presented with yellow, brittle, slow-growing nails, which had developed progressively over the past 8 months; left ankle edema; a chronic, purulent, productive cough; and exertional dyspnea. Based on these symptoms, she was diagnosed with YNS. She fail

BACKGROUND: Ultrasound-guided automated percutaneous core needle biopsy (US-CNB) for breast tumors has been introduced into clinical practice, but it has not yet been used routinely. We evaluated its usefulness, especially in terms of histological accuracy.
METHODS: Thirty-one consecutive patients underwent mammography followed by breast biopsy with the automated core needle biopsy device.
RESULTS: Mammography was highly suggestive of malignancy or suspicious abnormalities in 17 cases whose histological findings from US-CNB specimens were invasive ductal carcinoma without exception. The othe

Nuchal translucency refers to the normal subcutaneous space, observed on first trimester ultrasound examination, between the skin and the cervical spine in the fetus. Increased nuchal translucency is known to be associated with an increased risk of aneuploidy, particularly Down syndrome. In addition to this association with aneuploidy, multiple studies have now identified increased nuchal translucency as a nonspecific marker of a wide range of fetal structural abnormalities, to include congenital diaphragmatic hernia, cardiac defects, and various genetic syndromes. The degree of nuchal translu

The purpose of the study was to evaluate ultrasound and computed tomography in the assessment of distant metastases, supraclavicular and abdominal, in 113 patients with carcinoma of the oesophagus and gastrooesophageal junction. Ultrasound and computed tomographic findings were compared with the cytological data in 29 patients and with the surgical data in 84 patients. In assessing distant metastases, ultrasound and computed tomography had a sensitivity of 61% and 70%, and a specificity of 93% and 85%, respectively (p = 1.0). When ultrasound and computed tomography were combined the sensitivit

BACKGROUND Morbihan disease, also known as Morbihan syndrome, is a rare medical condition characterized by chronic facial edema predominantly affecting the upper two-thirds of the face. Despite being recognized in medical literature for decades, its true prevalence and underlying pathophysiology remain poorly understood. Various hypotheses, including impaired lymphatic drainage, abnormal vascular permeability, immune dysregulation, and inflammatory reactions to demodex infestation, have been proposed to explain the etiology. CASE REPORT We present a case of a 61-year-old man with organized per

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is a common surgical option for gallstone disease with minimal trauma and rapid recovery. Ascites is a relatively uncommon complication after laparoscopic cholecystectomy and is more frequently observed in patients with preoperative abnormal liver function. However, patients without underlying liver disease develop refractory ascites after laparoscopic cholecystectomy are rare. We report a case of massive ascites caused by lymphatic injury after laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

To assess the significance of lymphatic filariasis for the development of chronic genital manifestations and for reproductive health in women, we conducted a cross-sectional study of 2 villages in north-eastern Tanzania including interview and gynaecological examination of adult women, focusing primarily on reproductive history and genital health. In a population of 2165 residents, prevalence of Wuchereria bancrofti microfilaraemia was 28%, and geometric mean intensity of microfilariae (mf) was 722 mf/mL. Leg lymphoedema (elephantiasis) was present in 4.2% of adults aged > or = 15 years, and h

BACKGROUND AND METHODS: Indocyanine green (ICG) lymphography is one of several methods of lymphography to detect lymphatic channels and evaluate patients clinically with limb lymphedema. ICG imaging is made possible by the use of a near-infrared camera device. The fluorescence images were digitalized for real-time display.
RESULTS: ICG lymphography findings are largely classifiable into two patterns: normal linear pattern and abnormal dermal backflow (DB) pattern. ICG lymphography pattern changes from the normal linear pattern to abnormal DB patterns in obstructive peripheral lymphedema; with

A variety of diseases can arise from the normal contents of the retrotracheal space or from adjacent structures. Mediastinal diseases in the retrotracheal space typically manifest radiographically as a contour abnormality or an area of increased opacity, although computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance (MR) imaging is usually required for diagnosis. The most common aortic arch anomaly, a right subclavian artery that originates from an otherwise normal left-sided aortic arch, appears at posteroanterior chest radiography as an obliquely oriented soft-tissue area of increased opacity that

BACKGROUND: Peritoneal spread of tumour cells is a major source of morbidity and mortality in patients with colorectal cancer. In order to develop strategies to prevent intraperitoneal dissemination and to treat peritoneal carcinomatosis, the spread of tumour cells in the peritoneal cavity was studied.
METHODS: Two million CC531 colon carcinoma cells were administered intraperitoneally in five groups of eight rats. The rats were killed after 1, 2, 4 and 8 hours and 3, 7, 14 and 21 days. After inspection of the abdominal cavity, samples of blood and ascites were taken. Liver, spleen, omentum,
