Impact of Dental Malocclusions on Age and Gender-Related Masticatory Performance in Orthodontic Patients.

BACKGROUND: Orthodontic treatment is often sought for aesthetic and psychosocial reasons, while the functional consequences of dental malocclusions remain less frequently integrated into clinical decision-making. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate how the presence, type, and combinations of dental malocclusions affect masticatory performance using Indicator of Anatomical Malocclusion (IAM) with objective physiological measures of mastication. METHODS: Masticatory performance was assessed using a two-colour chewing gum mixing test (20 chewing cycles; Hue-Check Gum), with colour homogeneity quantified as

Prevalence of congenitally missing upper lateral incisors in an orthodontic adolescent population.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the frequency of congenitally missing maxillary lateral incisors (LIs) and to find out its variability in relation to gender. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was carried out between January 2017 and December 2017. Orthopantomographs (OPGs) and lateral cephalographs record search of all orthodontic adolescent patients aged 12 to 18 years were taken from the archival records of the department. Orthopantomographs helped to diagnose the presence of unilateral/bilateral maxillary lateral incisors while the ANB angle was calculated from the lateral cephalographs

Impact of extracted primary teeth on occlusion and its relation to weight status among a group of children.

Introduction: Premature loss of primary molars can disrupt dental arch integrity, alter occlusal relationships, and predispose to malocclusion. Concurrently, undernutrition may influence craniofacial growth, compounding occlusal disturbances. Aims: The study’s objectives were to assess the effects of early primary molar extraction on the formation of occlusal relationships and investigate its relationship to children’s weight-for-age status. Materials and methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 200 children between the ages of 7 and 8. Each child was examined to ascertain the presenc

Long-term outcome in a patient with a dentoskeletal open-bite malocclusion treated without extraction.

This case report describes the treatment of a patient with a Class II malocclusion with an anterior open bite. The patient, a girl 16 years of age, had a significant anteroposterior discrepancy and a high-angle tendency. Her face was convex, with competent lips. Intraorally she had an anterior open bite of 3 mm, space in the mandibular arch, and an overjet of 2 mm. High-pull headgear, anterior intermaxillary elastics, and appropriate wire bending were used to close the bite and to correct the anteroposterior dental relationship. Modification of a tongue thrust habit helped to correct this sign

[Interdental distraction osteogenesis: a retrospective case study].

Skeletal Class II malocclusion is the most common indication for combined orthodontic-orthognathic treatment. Interdental distraction osteogenesis can be applied during the pubertal growth spurt with the aim of avoiding orthognathic surgery at a later age. This retrospective case study included 20 patients with mandibular retrognathia for whom orthodontic treatment with functional appliances had yielded insufficient results and who were subsequently treated with interdental distraction osteogenesis. A Class I occlusion was achieved in all patients. The average mandibular length gain was 9.6 mm

Proposed differential diagnosis and classification of non-syndromic and syndromic supernumerary teeth.

BACKGROUND: Supernumerary teeth (SPNs), as common odontogenic developmental anomalies, not only cause local complications such as dental crowding and impaction but also serve as key oral manifestations of multiple genetic syndromes. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of multiple SPNs (7 teeth with an odontoma) in a 17-year-old Chinese male who presented without any genetic syndromes. Clinical examination revealed a permanent dentition exhibiting Angle Class II malocclusion with dental crowding, featuring an ectopically erupted tooth 34 positioned lingual to tooth 35, two supernumerary teeth i
