After transcranial magnetic brain stimulation, two types of responses in muscles supplied by cranial nerves (trigeminal, facial, accessory, and hypoglosseal nerves) can be observed. With a placement of the coil center approximately 6 cm lateral of the vertex on the interaural line, purely ipsilateral responses can be evoked in the cranial muscles which are induced by excitation of the nerves at or near their intracisternal course ('short-latency' responses). With the coil center 4 cm lateral of the vertex bilaterally 'long-latency' responses can be evoked which are the result of an excitation

In Parkinson's disease (PD), in addition to degeneration of the nigrostriatal dopaminergic pathway, a variety of neuronal systems are involved, causing multiple neuromediator dysfunctions that account for the complex patterns of functional deficits. Degeneration affects the dopaminergic mesocorticolimbic system, the noradrenergic locus ceruleus (oral parts) and motor vagal nucleus, the serotonergic raphe nuclei, the cholinergic nucleus basalis of Meynert, pedunculopontine nucleus pars compacta, Westphal-Edinger nucleus, and many peptidergic brainstem nuclei. Cell losses in subcortical projecti

The history of biology reveals numerous interpretations of the relationship between ontogeny and phylogeny, among them Garstang's critical realization that phylogeny can only be the history of changes in an ancestral ontogeny. One extrapolation of Garstang's conclusion is that the study of phylogeny should involve comparisons of ontogenies, in order to allow a reconstruction of the sequence of changes that led to the present variation in these ontogenies as well as the mechanisms underlying these changes. It is suggested that this can be done by recognizing homologous developmental stages amon

A prominent and stereotypical feature of cortical circuitry in the striate cortex is a plexus of long-range horizontal connections, running for 6-8 mm parallel to the cortical surface, which has a clustered distribution. This is seen for both intrinsic cortical connections within a particular cortical area and the convergent and divergent connections running between area 17 and other cortical areas. To determine if these connections are related to the columnar functional architecture of cortex, we combined labeling of the horizontal connections by retrograde transport of rhodamine-filled latex

Using the axon degeneration method by R. Fink and L. Heimer, organization of intrathalamic connections between various areas of the lateral hypothalamus have been studied after unisided electrolitic lesion. At any location of the injury foci, similar patterns are observed in ipsilateral distribution of degenerating fibers along the whole lateral preoptico-hypothalamic area. The most massive degeneration is observed in the zone where the medial forebrain bundle (MFB) fibers run. The degenerating fibers spread forward--into the septal area, and backward--into the mesencephalic part of the brain.

The method of horseradish peroxidase retrograde axonal transport was used to study the connections between neurons of respiratory nuclei and reticular formation of medulla oblongata and descending fibre pathways from these structures in the spinal cord of cats. It is shown that neurons of the nucleus ambiguus and nucleus retroambiguus (the ventral respiratory group) are connected with the ventrolateral part of nucleus tractus solitarius (the dorsal respiratory group) and from direct bilateral connections with each other and with the medial part of medulla oblongata. A wide developed system of

As the taxonomic status of the Tupaioidea within the Order Primates is still unsettled, an attempt is being made to throw some light on this problem through investigations on the nuclear configuration and fibre connections of the diencephalon of the tree-shrew. Several tree-shrew species, particularly Tupaia glis and Urogale everetti have been involved in this qualitative study, and comparisons of diencephalic structures among the tree-shrews species, and with the Insectivores and Prosimii have been made. Thalamic and hypothalamic nuclei which show more advanced development than others, are nu

The localization of the olivo-cerebellar fibers in the inferior cerebellar peduncle was examined in a patient who showed severe degeneration of the left olivary nucleus due to an old hemorrhagic infarct in the contralateral cerebellum. Other precerebellar nuclei which send their cerebellipetal axons to the inferior cerebellar peduncle, such as the external cuneate nucleus, the lateral reticular nucleus and the arcuate nucleus, were normally preserved. The dorsal spino-cerebellar tract and the vestibular nuclei, together with the juxtarestiform body were also intact. Degeneration of the inferio

The role of dorsal column (DC)-medial lemniscus and spinocervicothalamic systems on tactile reactions, placing and tactile localization (turning to localize a point touched on the body) was studied in cats with spinal and bulbar lesions. The cats with vision occluded were trained preoperately on horizontal bars for tactile localization. The bulbar lesions of cervicothalamic tract (CTT), which anatomically overlaps with gracile nuclear efferent projection, resulted in permanent loss of tactile placing and localization in contralateral hindlimb. Section of dorsal half of lateral funiculus at C3,

The anterior commissure (AC) is generally identified as one of the major interhemispheric pathways. Anatomical results, however, indicate that it has significant ipsilateral components. Further, as reported here, the ipsilaterally projecting axons are organized as a system of narrow, quasi-parallel stripes, especially prominent at the transverse decussation. These appear as a medio-lateral array in coronal tissue sections, but at higher magnification can be seen to consist of axonal segments aggregated in an obliquely anterior-posterior (AP) trajectory. This is counter-oriented to the interstr

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is unique in its requirement of an external stressor for the development of disease, leading to dysregulated mood, intrusive memories, and avoidance symptoms. Over the past decade, insights from human neuroimaging, mechanistic neural circuitry studies in animal models, and genomic work have revolutionized our understanding of this psychiatric illness, with emerging data from large-scale PTSD genome-wide association studies providing novel insights into the mechanism of PTSD. Despite these advances, therapeutic interventions remain limited, and psychotherapy

The sense of touch provides spatial and textural information but how tactile input is integrated with motor signals and selectively processed for adaptive behavior remain incompletely understood. Here, I review neuronal circuits contributing to whisker sensation in rodents at three different levels. First, I point to the columnar architecture of the primary somatosensory cortex in which whiskers are individually represented by barrel columns with intricate microcircuits, likely important for processing tactile information from individual whiskers. Next, I highlight the importance of lateral in

The subiculum, a key component of the medial temporal lobe (MTL), has traditionally been viewed as a relay station for hippocampal output to cortical regions. However, its intricate afferent and efferent connections with diverse brain areas suggest a more independent role in memory and spatial navigation. This review argues that the subiculum encodes regularities in environmental structures (e.g., boundaries, corners, axes) and behavioral patterns imposed by task demands, integrating hippocampal information into schematic representations for goal-directed actions. In conditions where perceptua

Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) shows a characteristic but incompletely defined pattern of neurodegeneration, in part because prior imaging studies have been limited by small and heterogeneous cohorts. Here, we consolidated evidence for PSP-related gray matter (GM) loss using a coordinate-based meta-analysis and interpreted the resulting atrophy pattern in a network and molecular framework to infer disease-relevant mechanisms. We conducted an Anatomical Likelihood Estimation (ALE) meta-analysis of whole-brain morphometry studies investigating atrophy in PSP, followed by functional decodin

Schizophrenia imposes a global health burden characterized by treatment-refractory cognitive deficits, with converging evidence implicating cerebellar-cortical circuit dysfunction as a pivotal pathophysiological mechanism. In this review, we focus on the advances from neuroimaging, molecular, and therapeutic studies to elucidate the cerebellum's role in schizophrenia-related cognitive pathology. Particularly, we aim to address the advances across four domains: cognitive subtyping in schizophrenia; cerebellar-cortical connectivity evidenced from anatomical, lesion, and neuroimaging studies; mul

Breathing regulation depends on a highly intricate and precise network within the brainstem, requiring the identification of all neuronal elements in the brainstem respiratory circuits and a comprehensive understanding of their organization into distinct functional compartments. These compartments play a pivotal role by providing essential input to three main targets: cranial motoneurons that regulate airway control, spinal motoneurons that activate the inspiratory and expiratory muscles, and higher brain structures that influence breathing behavior and integrate it with other physiological an
