[Visual evoked potentials. Their use in ophthalmology and other specialties].

The technique of investigating evoked visual potentials (EVP) is resumed within the context of electrophysiological methods as applied in optic neuritis. Several typical courses of the disease are case-reported in this account. In conclusion, authors recommend further on EVP implications due to its objectivity, non-invasiveness and time-sparing with a possible automated evaluation.

The repair of rhegmatogenous retinal detachments. American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Current techniques of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment repair allow most retinal detachments to be repaired successfully. The success of repair depends on a careful preoperative examination and choice of an appropriate surgical procedure. The surgical procedure must be tailored to the individual eye based on a detailed preoperative examination of the retina and vitreous. Postoperative complications are not infrequent compared to many other ophthalmic surgical procedures such as cataract extraction and strabismus repair. The surgeon must observe the eye carefully in the postoperative period to

Developing specialty-wide standards of practice: the experience of ophthalmology.

In 1986, the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) developed national guidelines for the diagnosis and treatment of major eye disease. A core committee of 10 AAO members detailed the framework and goals for the guidelines and wrote a series of broad criteria outlining the ophthalmologist's moral and ethical responsibilities. Several panels of AAO-physician experts were formed to develop guidelines for specific conditions. The panels were formed according to subspecialty and were assigned well-defined issues, such as the diagnosis and management of chronic, adult-onset open-angle glaucoma. Pr…

The present role of magnetic resonance imaging in neuro-ophthalmology.

At present, MR imaging is recommended as the primary imaging procedure in investigating neuro-ophthalmic disease of the orbit, chiasm, brain stem, optic radiations and craniocervical junction and in any lesion suspected to contain a hematoma. MR imaging and CT are complementary in investigating disease of the paranasal or cavernous sinus. MR imaging is contraindicated in disease of the orbit when there is any possibility of a metalic foreign body and when there are metalic clips on intracranial vascular structures, such as aneurysms. The field of imaging is rapidly changing. The evolution of M

[Artificial lenses at the Institute of Tropical Ophthalmology of Africa].

The authors present a report on the first set of twenty-three intra-ocular lenses fitting on subjects from Mali, performed at the "Tropical African Ophthalmology Institute" (I.O.T.A.) from december 1983 up to december 1984. This report deals mainly about the implants of the inner aqueous chamber of the eye after the intracapsular extraction. The mechanical complications and inflammatory corneal and retinal consequences which occurred after the surgical operation are being tested. None of these complications has questioned the visual and functional prognosis. So, the results seem quite good. Ne…

Department of Ophthalmology, University of Alabama, School of Medicine, Birmingham.

Evaluation of over 255 patients with sellar and parasellar lesions allowed study of the computed tomographic (CT) appearance of the cavernous sinus. Optimal visualization of the cavernous sinus was obtained with continuous contrast enhancement of both axial and coronal tomograms. The coronal projection provided imaging of cranial nerves with the cavernous sinus. The intracavernous carotid artery was seen only if it were calcified or encased by tumor extending into or invading the sinus. CT criteria suggesting an abnormal cavernous sinus are: (1) asymmetry of size, (2) asymmetry of shape, parti

Costello Syndrome and Ophthalmologic Issues: Unveiling the Unseen.

Costello syndrome (CS) is an ultra-rare condition belonging to the RASopathies, a group of disorders characterized by aberrant RAS/MAPK pathway signaling, which is involved in ocular development and in some eye pathologies. However, only a few studies assessing the ophthalmic features of individuals with CS are available. In this article, we describe the main ophthalmic anomalies and MRI findings in a large cohort of CS patients and compare our data with theliterature. 21 individuals with CS were enrolled and performedvisual acuity and refractive error assessment, intraocular pressure (IOP) ev

The Neuro-Ophthalmologic Manifestations of SPG7-Associated Disease.

The gene SPG7 codes for the protein paraplegin, a subunit of the m-AAA protease in the inner mitochondrial membrane involved in protein quality control. SPG7 was initially identified as causing autosomal recessive hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP), with a pure (insidiously progressive bilateral leg weakness and spasticity) and complex (with additional neurologic features including cerebellar signs and optic atrophy) forms. Now identified as one of the most common causes of HSP, SPG7-associated disease has been linked to additional neuro-ophthalmologic features, including isolated dominant op

The role of cGAS/STING signaling in ophthalmological diseases.

The eye is one of the most vulnerable parts of the human body. There are many kinds of ophthalmic diseases, which are caused by multiple factors. Generally, ophthalmic diseases have the characteristics of complicated etiology and difficult therapy. With the development of the times, ophthalmic diseases have become a major problem that affects people's lives. Inflammation, a major factor inducing ocular diseases, is one of the most popular research directions. The cGAS/STING pathway is a recently discovered inflammatory signaling pathway, which recognizes double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) as an activ

Ophthalmologic Findings in Children with Neurofibromatosis Type 1.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the ophthalmologic findings in children with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) and compare these findings in eyes with and without optic pathway gliomas (OPGs). We carried out a retrospective chart review of children with NF1. We recorded demographic characteristics, clinical manifestations of disease, and ophthalmologic findings including visual acuity, intraocular pressure, cup-to-disc ratio, visual field testing, and optical coherence tomography findings. Ophthalmologic findings were examined for the cohort for initial and final appointments. These fin

Polydactyly-Myopia Syndrome: Genetic and Ophthalmologic Perspectives.

Polydactyly-myopia syndrome is a rare genetic condition characterized by the co-occurrence of polydactyly and myopia. Herein, we present the case of a 28-year-old Muslim male, born of consanguineous parents, who presented with complaints of diminished vision since childhood. Ophthalmologic examination revealed severe myopia with characteristic fundus changes indicative of high myopia. Additionally, the patient exhibited polydactyly in all limbs, with a positive family history of both polydactyly and myopia. This case underscores the importance of recognizing and managing rare syndromes to prov
