Spinal position sense in ankylosing spondylitis.

STUDY DESIGN: A cross-sectional comparison of spinal position sense in 50 patients with mild ankylosing spondylitis and 50 healthy controls. OBJECTIVES: To determine if spinal position sense is impaired in patients with mild ankylosing spondylitis. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Pathologic processes in ankylosing spondylitis target sites in the spine where joint capsules, ligaments, and tendons attach into bone. Because these sites contain receptors conveying position sense, proprioception may become impaired, and this may contribute to the spinal deformity that often develops in the more advan…

Dynamic and Context-Dependent Modulation of Somatosensory Input in the Primate Primary Motor Cortex.

During voluntary movement, somatosensory input is attenuated, a phenomenon known as sensory gating, which may prevent the CNS from being overwhelmed by predictable afferent feedback not essential for motor control. In the cerebral cortex, sensory gating has been demonstrated in primary (S1) and higher-order sensory areas. The primary motor cortex (M1) is the major cortical output relay to the spinal cord and muscles, and proprioceptive feedback is crucial for shaping motor output. However, whether proprioceptive signals to M1 are attenuated during movement and, if so, for what functional purpo

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation Effect on Virtual Hand Illusion.

Virtual reality (VR) is effectively used to evoke the mirror illusion, and transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) synergistically facilitates this illusion. This study investigated whether a mirror virtual hand illusion (MVHI) induced by an immersive, first-person-perspective, virtual mirror system could be modulated by tDCS of the primary motor cortex. Fourteen healthy adults (average age 21.86 years ±0.47, seven men and seven women) participated in this study, and they experienced VR with and without tDCS-the tDCS and sham conditions, each of which takes ∼30 minutes-on separate days

Improved balance performance accompanied by structural plasticity in blind adults after training.

Postural control requires the sensory integration of visual, vestibular, and proprioceptive signals. In the absence of vision, either by blindfolding or in blind individuals, balance performance is typically poorer than with sight. Previous research has suggested that despite showing compensatory vestibular and proprioceptive processing during upright standing, balance performance in blind individuals is overall lower than in sighted controls with eyes open. The present study tested whether balance training, which places demands on vestibular and proprioceptive self-motion perception, improves

Behavioural and neural basis of anomalous motor learning in children with autism.

Autism spectrum disorder is a developmental disorder characterized by deficits in social and communication skills and repetitive and stereot … . In random trials the reach was perturbed, resulting in errors that were sensed through vision and proprioception. The brain learned from these errors and altered the motor commands on the subsequent reach. We measured learning from error as a function of the sensory modality of that error, and found that children with autism spectrum disorder outperformed typi …

[Nonpharmacological treatment of osteoporosis].

Exercise and prevention of falls are the cornerstone of nonpharmacological treatment of osteoporosis (OP). Mechanical stress has osteogenic properties. Proprioceptive training can improve balance. Intermittent mechanical stimuli are most appropriate type of functional bone adaptation. Recommendations for exercises include type (aerobic, weight-bearing, resistance), frequency (minimum 3x weekly), duration (minimum 20-30 minutes) and intensity of 50-80% of repetitive maximum (RM). Target muscle groups for intervention are spine extensors and hip muscles. Eliminaton of risk of falls and proprioce

[Peroneal reaction time: study of a normal sample].

Chronic functional instability is a residual problem after acute ankle sprain. Reasons may be weak ligaments and/or a deficit in the proprioceptive system. Studies have shown that peroneal reaction time (PRT) can be used to quantify proprioceptive performance. To test the influence of anthropometric data on PRT, an experimental study with 120 healthy volunteers was performed. Surface electrodes recorded the activity of the peroneal muscles after a sudden inversion on a tilting platform. It was found that PRT is not influenced by extrinsic or anthropometric data. Furthermore, the results prove

The influence of skin colour on the experience of ownership in the rubber hand illusion.

Racial prejudice is associated with a fundamental distinction between "us" and "them"-a distinction linked to the perceived overlap between representations of the self and others. Implicit prejudice has been shown to reduce the intensity of White individuals' hand ownership sensation as induced by the Rubber Hand Illusion (RHI) with dark rubber hands. However, evidence for this link to implicit prejudice comes from self-report questionnaire data regarding the RHI. As an alternative, we assessed the onset time of the RHI. We hypothesized that onset time of the RHI would be higher for the black

Development of nonunions in the rat fibula after removal of periosteal neural mechanoreceptors.

Periosteal proprioceptive nerve receptors may act as mechanoreceptors of long bones during adaptive remodeling after fracture. They may also contribute to the mechanisms of coordinated functional activity of fractured limbs and thus inhibit harmful overloading of fracture callus. The area of proprioceptive nerve receptors around the distal part of the rat fibula was stripped surgically, and a standard fracture of the fibular shaft was produced. Animals failed to unite their fractures and developed mainly atrophic nonunions. Atrophy of ununited fragments was due to osteoclastic bone resorption.

Visual modulation of vestibular-evoked balance response disturbed by posterior cortical atrophy.

We have recently shown that perception of uprightness is disturbed in typical Alzheimer's disease (tAD) and posterior cortical atrophy (PCA; 'visual-variant Alzheimer's'); disturbances were attributed to disrupted spatial transformation of graviceptive information. Here, we extend investigations to the vestibular control of uprightness during stance using galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) under various proprioceptive and visual conditions. An appropriately directed response to GVS requires spatial transformation of the vestibular signal based on head orientation relative to the feet, while

Balance rehabilitation: promoting the role of virtual reality in patients with diabetic peripheral neuropathy.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with diabetic peripheral neuropathy frequently experience concomitant impaired proprioception and postural instability. Conventional exercise training has been demonstrated to be effective in improving balance but does not incorporate visual feedback targeting joint perception, which is an integral mechanism that helps compensate for impaired proprioception in diabetic peripheral neuropathy. METHODS: This prospective cohort study recruited 29 participants (mean ± SD: age, 57 ± 10 years; body mass index [calculated as weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squa…

Prolonged reaction time in patients with chronic lateral instability of the ankle.

Impaired proprioception has been suggested as one cause of chronic lateral instability of the ankle. We subjected 15 ankles in 13 patients with symptoms of chronic lateral instability to sudden angular displacement. The reaction times in the peroneus longus and the tibialis anterior muscles were recorded and compared with those from 15 control ankles. Significantly longer ipsilateral reaction time was recorded in the patients (65 ms) compared with the controls (49 ms). We concluded that delayed proprioceptive response to sudden angular displacement of the ankle may predispose an individual to …

The Cornea Harbors a Tricellular Neuro-Immune Niche that Underpins Touch Sensation.

Piezo2 is a mechanosensitive ion channel essential for touch and proprioception, yet the mechanisms that maintain this sensory modality in adult tissues are unknown. Using multiphoton imaging of the cornea in live mice, we discovered that the Cx3cr1 Cre locus targets not only macrophages, but also a distinct subset of nerves. Spatial-RNAseq resolved that Cx3cr1 Cre -driven labeling was uniquely enriched in Piezo2-expressing neurons, a result of temporal Cx3cr1 expression during development. Through lineage tracing, scRNAseq, and imaging, we identified a novel tripartite cellular niche at the e…
