Incidence and Risk Factors Associated With the Development of Neovascular Glaucoma Following a Diagnosis of Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy or Retinal Vein Occlusion.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate cumulative incidence and risk factors for neovascular glaucoma (NVG) in patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR), central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO), or branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO). PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective cohort study using an aggregated, de-identified electronic health record platform (TriNetX), with data from 60+ health care organizations, identified patients with ICD-10 encounter diagnoses for PDR, CRVO, or BRVO and subsequent NVG. NVG cumulative incidence was calculated at 1 day, 1 month, and 3…

The Efficacy of Simultaneous Injection of Dexamethasone Implant and Ranibizumab Into Vitreous Cavity on Macular Edema Secondary to Central Retinal Vein Occlusion.

The purpose of this study was to determine the safety and effectiveness of simultaneous vitreous injection of dexamethasone implant and ranibizumab on macular edema secondary to central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO). We conducted a 6-month retrospective self-control study. Twenty-five patients diagnosed with macular edema secondary to CRVO were enrolled in this study. The patients received intravitreal injection of dexamethasone implant and ranibizumab. The changes in best corrected visual acuity (BCVA), central retinal thickness (CRT) and interocular pressure (IOP) before and at 2w, 1, 2, 3, …

Central retinal vein occlusion due to herpes zoster as the initial presenting sign in a patient with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).

Central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) due to herpes zoster has rarely been reported. Varicella zoster virus is a common opportunistic infection in patients with AIDS. This case report is about a 40-year-old man with herpes zoster ophthalmicus and central retinal vein occlusion of the right eye who is HIV-positive. Although the lesion resolved following treatment with intravenous acyclovir and oral steroid, the patient subsequently developed florid disc neovascularization and vitreous hemorrhage. The paper highlights CRVO as the initial presentation in an AIDS patient with herpes zoster ophthal…

Unilateral optic disk edema with central retinal artery and vein occlusions as the presenting signs of relapse in acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

CLINICAL CASE: A 39-year-old man with Philadelphia chromosome-positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia (LAL Ph+) developed progressive vision loss to no light perception in his right eye. He had optic disk edema and later developed central artery and vein occlusions. Pan-photocoagulation, as well as radiotherapy of the whole brain were performed in several fractions. Unfortunately the patient died of hematological relapse 4 months later. DISCUSSION: Optic nerve infiltration may appear as an isolated sign of a leukemia relapse, even before a hematological relapse occurs. Leukemic optic neuropathy

Hyperhomocysteinemia and low plasma folate as risk factors for central retinal vein occlusion: a case-control study in a Chinese population.

PURPOSE: To determine whether hyperhomocysteinemia and low plasma folate are risk factors for central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) in the Chinese population. METHODS: A matched case-control study was conducted between July 2004 and May 2005. The study cohort consisted of 64 individuals that had been diagnosed to have CRVO and 64 normal controls (matched for age, gender, hypertension, smoking and drinking habits). None of the cases or controls had a history of diabetes, glaucoma, medication or any other vascular events that might minimize the influence on plasma homocysteine levels. A cross-s…

Real-World Insights on Switching Aflibercept Dosage for Enhanced Outcomes in Retinal Vein Occlusion (RISE-RVO): visual, anatomical and durability outcomes.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Evaluation of durability outcomes after switching to aflibercept 8 mg for macular oedema in retinal vein occlusion (RVO). METHODS: We evaluated eyes with branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) or central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO), switching from other anti-vascular endothelial growth factor treatments to off-label aflibercept 8 mg under an observe-and-plan regimen. Eyes receiving ongoing treatment with ≥10 prior injections were eligible. Treatment discontinuation during the 12-month follow-up period resulted in exclusion. All data were obtained through the review of medical…

PURPOSE: To report the 5-year outcomes of intravitreal aflibercept in patients with macular edema due to central retinal vein occlusion(CRVO). METHODS: Participants in this study were 51 treatment naïve patients with macular edema due to CRVO, who received intravitreal aflibercept 2.0mg using a treat-and-extend regimen after a loading dose of three-monthly injections. The primary outcomes were the mean change in best-corrected visual acuity(BCVA) and central subfield thickness(CST) at month 60 compared to baseline. RESULTS: At month 60, there was a statistically significant improvement in BC…

Demography, clinical profile and risk of retinal vein occlusion among patients with age-related macular degeneration - a tertiary hospital based study.

PURPOSE: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and retinal vein occlusion (RVO) share common risk factors and the risk of blindness is higher when both diseases coexist. This study aims to evaluate the risk factors of developing RVO among AMD patients and describe their clinical characteristics. METHODS: In this single-center cohort study, 5618 Patients with AMD were divided into two groups: those who developed RVO and those who did not. Demographic, clinical and comorbidity profile were compared and multivariable logistic regression was performed to identify risk factors for RVO among patie…

Extended Real-World Efficacy of Faricimab in Therapy-Resistant Macular Edema Due to Retinal Vein Occlusion: 9-Month Follow-Up Results.

Background: Macular edema (ME) secondary to retinal vein occlusion (RVO) is a significant cause of vision impairment. Many patients show suboptimal responses to anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) monotherapy, prompting the exploration of alternative treatments. Faricimab is a bispecific antibody that targets VEGF-A and angiopoietin-2. We report 9-month real-world outcomes of switching to faricimab in therapy-resistant RVO-associated ME. Methods: In this retrospective study at a single tertiary center, patients with persistent or recurrent ME despite prior treatments (ranibizum…

BACKGROUND: The study was designed to investigate microvascular and morphological changes in retinal vein occlusion (RVO) using multimodal imaging after intravitreal ranibizumab (IVR) with or without triamcinolone acetonide (IVTA) injections. METHODS: This was a retrospective and observational study. Fifty patients (52 eyes) diagnosed with RVO were enrolled. Caspase-9 inhibition confers stronger neuronal and vascular protection compared to VEGF neutralization in a mouse model of retinal vein occlusion.

PURPOSE: Retinal vein occlusion (RVO) is a sight-threatening condition typically treated with intravitreal injection of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) antagonists. Treatment response to anti-VEGF therapies is highly variable, with poor visual outcomes and treatment response in patients with significant retinal nonperfusion following RVO. Recently, caspase-9 has been identified as a potent regulator of edema, gliosis, and neuronal dysfunction during acute retinal hypoxia. The purpose of this study was to compare the therapeutic effect of caspase-9 inhibition against VEGF-neutralizati…
