Trajectories of social support are associated with health outcomes and depressive symptoms among older Taiwanese adults with diabetes following hip-fracture surgery.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined trajectories of social support and their relationships with health outcomes over 2 years post hip-fracture surgery for older adults with diabetes mellitus (DM). METHODS: This was a secondary analysis of data derived from a clinical trial, which included 158 hip fractured older adults with DM who had completed the Medical Outcomes Study Social Support Survey at 1-, 12-, 18-, and 24-months following hospital discharge. Health outcomes for self-care, physical and nutritional status, mental health, and depression were assessed at 3-month intervals up to 24-months af

Relationships between social factors and physical activity among elderly survivors of the Great East Japan earthquake: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Physical inactivity is a health issue that often occurs after serious disaster. Social factors, which can be disrupted by disaster, are important determinants of physical activity levels in everyday living. This study was designed to confirm the association between social factors and physical activity among elderly survivors of the Great East Japan Earthquake. METHODS: From September 2011 to February 2012, 4316 males and females aged 65 or older participated in a health survey of Great East Japan Earthquake survivors. Multiple logistic regression analyses were performed with the d

Autism and Homelessness: Risk and Protective Factors in a Bayesian Analysis of Autistic Characteristics.

Autistic individuals are overrepresented in homeless populations, yet mechanisms driving this association remain unclear, particularly in the context of diagnostic access and structural inequities. We surveyed 333 adults in Australia, assessing autistic traits (Autism-Spectrum Quotient [AQ]-50), homelessness risk factors, adaptive functioning and social support. Bayesian hierarchical logistic regression models were used to estimate associations. Associations between autistic traits and homelessness probability differed according to diagnostic status. Among participants without a formal diagnos

Investigation and analysis of mental health status of the older adult in western rural areas.

BACKGROUND: The mental health of the older adult in western rural areas is an area of growing concern. Mental health, as defined by the World Health Organization, encompasses emotional, psychological, and social well-being, affecting how individuals think, feel, and act. In this study, we operationalize mental health through four validated dimensions: depression (emotional well-being), anxiety (psychological stability), loneliness (social connectedness), and life satisfaction (overall subjective well-being), which together provide a comprehensive assessment of mental health status. Loneliness and smoking status: a pilot study of extended-stay hotel residents in Atlanta, Georgia.

INTRODUCTION: As the housing industry struggles to meet growth demands in the United States, more people rely on extended-stay hotels (ESH) as their primary housing source. These settings often serve as a last resort for low-income families, many of whom face substandard housing quality and other conditions that can intensify environmental health risks. One complex environmental issue that disproportionately impacts ESH residents is tobacco smoke exposure. Although ESH residents understand the negative impacts of smoking on themselves and bystanders, previous qualitative research has found tha

Shared Experience of Physical Vitality and Social Participation Among Caregiving Dyads: Comparing Dyads With and Without Dementia.

Social connection is a core component of well-being. Older adults with declining physical functioning or serious health conditions are at particular risk for social isolation and loneliness, and often rely on a family caregiver to facilitate their social participation. Using data from the 2015 and 2017 National Health and Aging Trends Study and the National Survey of Caregiving, this study sought to elucidate dyadic interdependence in the relationship between physical vitality and social participation, among care recipient-caregiver dyads (152 dyads with dementia; 475 dyads without dementia).

The association of the four social vulnerability themes and COVID-19 mortality rates in U.S. Counties.

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between social vulnerability and COVID-19 mortality rates during the whole outbreak in U.S. counties. COVID-19 deaths were gleaned from the USA Facts. Independent variables were gleaned from the CDC's Social Vulnerability Index. Spatial autoregressive models were used for data analysis. Results show that counties with more social vulnerability (socioeconomic) were positively associated with higher COVID-19 mortality rates. Counties with more social vulnerability (household composition & disability) were positively associated with higher

Psychosocial and economic factors related to better health among older adults in Europe - a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Healthy and positive aging are increasingly recognized in public health as multidimensional processes that integrate physical, psychological, and social resources to support autonomy, active engagement, and quality of life in later life. This systematic review synthesizes recent European evidence on psychosocial and socioeconomic determinants of healthy aging among older adults and contributes to the conceptualization of positive aging from a public health perspective. METHODS: A systematic search of PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase identified empirical studies published in En

Reactions to ethnic deviance: The role of backlash in racial stereotype maintenance.

Backlash effects are social and economic penalties for counterstereotypical behavior (Rudman & Phelan, 2008). Five experiments support a model of the role of backlash in racial stereotype maintenance from the standpoint of perceivers and actors (Rudman & Fairchild, 2004). In Experiment 1, perceivers sabotaged Asians and Whites for succeeding in counterstereotypical domains, thereby preventing their future success. In Experiment 2, a White rapper suffered prejudice and economic discrimination, relative to a Black rapper, and prejudice mediated discrimination. Further, actors threatened by backl

The predictability of relapses in schizophrenic patients.

The objective of this study was to identify clinically relevant predictors of short-term (2 years) outcome in schizophrenic patients and to gather these predictors into one simple prognosis model for the course of the disease. Ninety-nine schizophrenic outpatients classified according to DSM-III criteria were observed for 3 years with regard to their relapse (rehospitalization) frequency. Predictors of both a high and a low relapse risk permitting a prognostic assessment of the individual case were based on various sources: case history data, especially those relating to the previous course of

Youth Homelessness and Social Stigma.

Building upon previous exploratory qualitative research (Kidd SA (2003) Child Adol Social Work J 20(4):235-261), this paper examines the mental health implications of social stigma as it is experienced by homeless youth. Surveys conducted with 208 youths on the streets and in agencies in New York City and Toronto revealed significant associations between perceived stigma due to homeless status and sexual orientation, pan handling and sex trade involvement, and amount of time homeless. Higher perceived stigma was also related to low self esteem, loneliness, feeling trapped, and suicidal ideatio

Adolescent health and the intersectionality of ethnicity/race, sex, and sexual orientation: A national probability sample from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study.

Although children with marginalized sociodemographic characteristics are exposed to increased health risk and disparities, there is a paucity of population-based research on health status of children occupying multiple social marginalities. The present study investigated implications of children's intersectional sociodemographic characteristics on health risk indicators. In this longitudinal cohort study, we used longitudinal data from the ongoing Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study. The study used a population-based sample of 9- to 10-year-old children attending private and public sc

Impact of social network composition on cognitive decline: Digital Dementia Registry Bavaria (digiDEM Bayern).

BACKGROUND: Currently, there is no curative treatment for dementia. The implementation of preventive measures is of great importance. Therefore, it is necessary to identify and address individual and modifiable risk factors. Social isolation, defined through social networks, is a factor that may influence the onset and progression of the disease. The networks of older people are mostly composed of either family or friends. The aim of this study is to examine the influence of social isolation and network composition on cognition over the course of 12 months in people with cognitive impairment.
