BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The spectrum of patients requiring adult spinal deformity (ASD) surgery is highly variable in baseline (BL) risk such as age, frailty, and deformity severity. Although improvements have been realized in ASD surgery over the past decade, it is unknown whether these carry over to high-risk patients. We aim to determine temporal differences in outcomes at 2 years after ASD surgery in patients stratified by BL risk.
METHODS: Patients ≥18 years with complete pre- (BL) and 2-year (2Y) postoperative data from 2009 to 2018 were categorized as having undergone surgery from 2

INTRODUCTION: Pectus excavatum and scoliosis are associated conditions with a high rate of coincidence. However, there are no reports to guide surgeons on the management of adolescents with moderate scoliosis and pectus excavatum, because there are conflicting conclusions in the literature regarding how the Nuss procedure with substernal bar affects scoliosis.
CASES: In 2017, we encountered two patients with moderate scoliosis treated with a spinal orthosis. After undergoing the Nuss procedure for pectus excavatum, their scoliosis acutely progressed into surgical magnitude requiring posterior

INTRODUCTION: Camptocormia is characterized by a pathological forward flexion of the trunk, which is reversible when lying and worsened by standing and walking. So far there is no consensus on how to measure the angle of flexion, and studies therefore give differing results. Harmonization is needed for both research and clinical practice. Orthopedic measures are not useful for this purpose.
METHODS: Two expert raters independently analyzed the photographs of 39 Parkinson patients with camptocormia while standing. They used four different methods to determine the camptocormia angle. The result

UNLABELLED: We evaluated the relationship between sagittal spinopelvic parameters and the occurrence of adjacent vertebral fractures (AVF) and determined the possible risk factor. The most important factors for AVFs are the degree of osteoporosis and altered biomechanics due to the spinopelvic imbalance in the fractured area of the spine.
INTRODUCTION: We intend to evaluate the relationship between sagittal spinopelvic parameters and the occurrence of adjacent vertebral fractures following the initial compression fracture and to determine the possible dominant risk factor associated with new

OBJECTIVES: Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is a group of pathological syndromes of unknown aetiology, observed at the developmental age. Their common feature is sustained chronic arthritis with flares and remissions. Clinical signs and symptoms include joint pain, periarticular tissue oedema or articular exudate, frequently associated with hypertrophy of the synovial membrane. The intra- and extra-articular structural damage impairs the motion range and smoothness. The disease process may involve any joint. The knee joint is the most frequently affected in oligo- and polyarthritis. The ai

Progressive spinal curvature in juvenile idiopathic scoliosis (JIS) is challenging to treat. When conservative management fails, treatments include growing rods (GRs) or posterior spinal fusion (PSF). The purpose of this study is to compare the patient characteristics and outcomes of GR and PSF treatment of JIS. We performed a retrospective review of demographic, radiographic, and surgical data for all JIS patients requiring surgical treatment between 2012 and 2020. Patients who underwent any GR treatment were compared to PSF patients. A total of 36 patients (13 GR, 23 PSF) were reviewed. PSF

PURPOSE: Surgical management of patients with multilevel CSM aims to decompress the spinal cord and restore the normal sagittal alignment. The literature lacks of high level evidences about the best surgical approach. Posterior decompression and stabilization in lordosis allows spinal cord back shift, leading to indirect decompression of the anterior spinal cord. The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy of posterior decompression and stabilization in lordosis for multilevel CSM.
METHODS: 36 out of 40 patients were clinically assessed at a mean follow-up of 5, 7 years. Outcome

OBJECTIVE: Correcting sagittal alignment is important in surgery for adult spinal deformity (ASD) surgery. T1 slope (TS) is a key parameter for evaluating whole spine alignment. Many patients with a large TS have thoracolumbar and cervical spine deformities. The aim of this study was to compare alignment changes before and after ASD surgery in two groups categorized by a preoperative TS of ≥ 40° or < 40°.
METHODS: The authors included patients aged ≥ 40 years who underwent spinal correction surgery for ASD between 2010 and 2019 and had at least 5 years of follow-up. The patients were divided

BACKGROUND: Anterior column realignment (ACR) is a powerful minimally invasive surgery technique to restore sagittal alignment in adult spinal deformity (ASD). This can accomplish similar segmental lordosis restoration as 3-column osteotomy with less blood loss and comparable complication rates. ACR can be performed at adjacent disease segments in the proximal lumbar spine in revision cases. However, two thirds of physiologic lordosis occurs between L4-S1, and concerns remain about altered lumbar morphology. We evaluated patients who underwent proximal lumbar ACR for iatrogenic flatback deform
