Visual inspection methods for cervical cancer prevention.

The need for simple, cost-effective screening approaches for cervical cancer prevention in low-resource countries has led to the evaluation of visual screening with 3-5% acetic acid. The low reproducibility and wide variation in accuracy reflect the subjective nature of the test. Pooled sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values were 80%, 92%, 10% and 99%, respectively, for detecting cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 2 or worse lesions. Realistic sensitivity of a quality- assured single visual inspection with acetic acid is around 50%. A single round of visual ins…

Gastroprotective and ulcer healing profile of the mast cell stabilizer quazolast in rats.

Quazolast, a mast cell stabilizer, was evaluated for efficacy against acid independent (alcohol, HCl), or dependent (aspirin, indomethacin) gastric damage in rats. Its gastroprotective profile was compared to that of ranitidine. In addition, the antisecretory and gastric ulcer (acetic acid induced) healing capabilities of these agents were examined. Quazolast, in direct contrast to ranitidine, protected the rat gastric mucosa from acid-independent, but not acid-dependent gastric damage. Quazolast lacked antisecretory activity in rats; however, it did heal acetic acid induced gastric ulcers in …

Effect of basic fibroblast growth factor on reinnervation of gastric microvessels. Possible relevance to ulcer recurrence.

Basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) has well-established angiogenic and ulcer healing actions. bFGF has also been found to induce neural regeneration in the central nervous system. Thus, the present study was undertaken to clarify the effect of basic fibroblast growth factor on the regeneration of autonomic nerves in the granulation tissues following the induction of experimental gastric ulcer induced by acetic acid in rats. Rats were divided into control, acetic acid alone, and acetic acid plus acid-stable human recombinant basic fibroblast growth factor (CS23, 1 microgram/100 g body wt., e…

Automated analysis of cervix images to grade the severity of cancer.

This paper discusses a method to objectively analyze the severity of cancer in images obtained from cervix. We propose a novel method to identify the transformation zone in post Lugol's iodine images and acetic acid images that are obtained from the cervix to grade the severity of cancer. We segment the Lugol's iodine image to identify the abnormal tissues and map them to acetic acid images to accurately identify the abnormal tissues in post acetic acid images as well. This information is further used to obtain an opacity difference score that could be used for grading the cancer.

Optimized Chemical Extraction Methods of Antimicrobial Peptides from Roots and Leaves of Extremophilic Plants: Anthyllis sericea and Astragalus armatus Collected from the Tunisian Desert.

Extraction methods depend mainly on the chemical nature of the extracted molecule. For these reasons, the selection of the extraction medium … icient solvents and extraction solutions, we used sulfuric acid, dichloromethane, phosphate buffer, acetic acid and sodium acetate, and we tested them on leaves and roots of both the studied plants. The extracts obtained using sulfuric acid, dichloromethane and phosphate buffer extraction did not show any antimicrobial activity, whereas the acetic acid and so …

Reduction in activity by noxious chemical stimulation is ameliorated by immersion in analgesic drugs in zebrafish.

Research has recently demonstrated that larval zebrafish show similar molecular responses to nociception to those of adults. Our study explored whether unprotected larval zebrafish exhibited altered behaviour after exposure to noxious chemicals and screened a range of analgesic drugs to determine their efficacy to reduce these responses. This approach aimed to validate larval zebrafish as a reliable replacement for adults as well as providing a high-throughput means of analysing behavioural responses. Zebrafish at 5 days post-fertilization were exposed to known noxious stimuli: acetic acid (0.…

Quantitative characterization of acid- and alkali-induced corneal injury in the low-volume eye test.

Defining the extent of initial injury has proven to be a useful basis for differentiating the ocular irritation potential of surfactants; however, the applicability of this method to other types of irritants has not been demonstrated. In the following studies we characterized the extent of corneal injury following exposure to different concentrations of acetic acid and sodium hydroxide (NaOH) in the rabbit low-volume eye test. Groups of rabbits received 3% acetic acid, 10% acetic acid, 2% NaOH, or 8% NaOH and were evaluated in vivo by macroscopic and in vivo confocal microscopic examination an…

Effect of level of input of different proportions of volatile fatty acids on energy utilization in growing ruminants.

Four steers were maintained wholly by intragastric infusion of volatile fatty acids (VFA) and protein, together with a mineral-vitamin supplement. The infusion was given at three levels of energy, namely 450, 675 and 900 kJ/kg live weight0.75, calculated to supply energy at 1.0, 1.5 or 2.0 times that required for maintenance. The VFA provided 0.837 and the protein 0.163 of the energy infused. The molar proportions of individual VFA were varied so that the infusate contained 0.36-0.91 of acetic acid, 0.56-0.01 of propionic acid and a constant 0.08 of butyric acid. Heat production was measured i…

Effect of different volatile fatty acids mixtures on energy metabolism in cattle.

Four Friesian steers (mean BW = 282 kg) were given mixtures of VFA and casein by intragastric infusion to give a total energy input of 675 kJ/kg BW.75. Casein supplied 16.3% of the energy and 777 mg N/kg BW.75. The molar proportion of butyric acid was held constant at 8 mol/100 mol, and the acetic and propionic acids varied inversely. Acetic acid was varied in 12 increments from 11 to 91 mol/100 mol and propionic acid proportion varied inversely. Heat production, blood (urea, insulin, beta-hydroxybutyrate, free fatty acids) and urine metabolites (urea, N, VFA) were measured. There were no diff…

Lycium barbarum Polysaccharides Improved Glucose Metabolism in Prediabetic Mice by Regulating Duodenal Contraction.

Lycium barbarum polysaccharides (LBPs) have been shown to exert an antiglycemic effect. Emerging evidence suggests that patients with hyperg … Ps ameliorated the gut microbiota composition and the levels of short-chain fatty acids, especially acetic acid, which might bind to the receptor on neurons to regulate the contraction of the duodenum. Acetic acid was hypothesized to play a key role in the above process. Then, acetic acid was determined to exert an antiglycemic effect as expected. In conclusi …

Predicting Nucleation of Isonicotinamide from the Solvent-Solute Interactions of Isonicotinamide in Common Organic Solvents.

The interactions of isonicotinamide (INA) with seven common solvents (acetic acid, acetonitrile, acetone, chloroform, ethyl acetate, and methanol) have been studied to examine solute-solvent effects on the nucleation of INA from these solvents. In a simple model of 1:1 solute-solvent interactions, the strongest INA-solvent interaction is with acetic acid (binding energy, Δ Ebind = -64.05 kJ mol-1) and the weakest is with chloroform (Δ Ebind = -24.85 kJ mol-1). This arises since acetic acid and INA form a hydrogen-bonding motif containing two moderate strength N-H···O hydrogen bonds, while chlo…

Date Vinegar: First Isolation of Acetobacter and Formulation of a Starter Culture.

There is a lack of scientific analysis and control over the production of date vinegar in Oman, despite its growing demand in the worldwide market. Traditional production of date vinegar may lead to elevated amounts of ethanol (≥0.5%) and reduced content of acetic acid (<4%) compared to the standard acceptable levels. This study aimed to isolate non-Gluconobacter species from date vinegar produced by spontaneous fermentation and formulate starter cultures for quick and efficient production of date vinegar. In spontaneous fermentation date vinegar samples, the highest concentration of acetic ac…

Selective Enrichment of Chlorogenic Acid and Related Phenolic Acids from Spent Coffee Grounds by Ultrasound-Assisted Extraction with Deep Eutectic Solvents.

Spent coffee grounds (SCGs), a major by-product of coffee consumption, remain an underused source of chlorogenic acid (CGA) and other phenolic constituents. This study investigated an ultrasound-assisted extraction strategy using deep eutectic solvents (DESs) to improve the recovery and phenolic-acid enrichment of SCGs. Among the tested DES formulations, the betaine-acetic acid system gave the best CGA extraction performance and was therefore used for further optimization by response surface methodology. The optimized process, conducted at a liquid-to-solid ratio of 28 mL/g, 75 °C, and 50 min,…
