Chronic wounds constitute a global crisis that has a substantial financial and social impact on healthcare systems. Many attempts have been made in recent decades to create bioceramic-based wound dressing materials to aid in the healing process. Bioceramics are frequently used as materials or alternatives for bone repair because of their strong mechanical qualities. Both soft and hard tissues can be repaired thanks to the release of various metallic ions from bioceramics. Cell motility, proliferation, differentiation, adhesion, angiogenesis, and antibiosis may all benefit from these ions. Thes

Long-term monitoring of electrophysiological signals is of great importance for continuous health monitoring, disease diagnosis, and intelligent human-machine interaction. However, developing a breathable and biocompatible skin-electrode interface with low interfacial impedance for long-term and motion-artifact-resistant epidermal monitoring remains a major challenge. To address this issue, we propose a bilayer design that enables functional decoupling via synergistic structural integration. An ultrathin bilayer epidermal electrode integrating an ultrathin poly(α-lipoic acid) (PLA) adhesive la

Viscoelastic biomaterials that exhibit biomimetic responses to applied stresses are important in studying physiology and designing biomaterial scaffolds. Particle-based hydrogels offer potential for engineering viscoelasticity through the design of both the component microparticles and their processing into bulk particle-based materials. When particles are not cross-linked to one another, particle movements in response to strain can potentially relieve applied stresses and facilitate the material's use in dynamic processes like bioprinting. In particle-based hydrogels based on spherical hydrog

Periodontitis affects nearly 50% of the global population. The main challenges are three major bottlenecks faced by traditional mechanical debridement and antibiotics: drug resistance, difficulty controlling deep infections, and imbalance in the immune-osteogenic microenvironment. This article systematically reviews how the latest 'bio-nanostructures' achieve mechanism-driven precision anti-infection and periodontal regeneration. First, it outlines the three major pathological networks, immunometabolism, autophagy, and gene-non-coding RNA, to identify key nodes in plaque evasion and bone homeo

Engineered tissues offer great promise for therapeutic organ repair. Yet, biofabrication of organ-scale tissues can take hours or days for large constructs with geometric complexity, during which living cells in the construct lack vascular support. To address this, we developed an approach to accelerate biofabrication by embedding microreservoirs of evacuation reagents throughout geometrically patterned sacrificial agents. We call this approach Suspended Particles for Omnidirectional Template Sacrifice (SPOTS). We show that microparticles can serve as both structural impurities as well as depo

Conventional optical imaging is constrained by photon absorption and multiple scattering in biological tissues. Extending excitation and emission into the second near-infrared window (NIR-II, 1000-1700 nm) markedly suppresses tissue autofluorescence and improves imaging fidelity. However, enhanced optical performance alone does not ensure clinical translatability. In this review, we distinguish the conceptual boundary between optical probes and translational optical agents, highlighting the critical role of formulation engineering in bridging material functionality with biomedical applicabilit

This study focuses on developing an efficient large-area graphene transfer method that combines high-throughput and precise laser engraving, simple polymer casting, and water immersion to fabricate conductive graphene and biodegradable polymer-based implantable flexible electronic devices. The low-temperature treatment of graphene sheets on a glass substrate reduced graphene sheet roughness and increased hydrophobicity, enabling facile and high-efficiency (∼100%) large-area graphene transfer to a flexible polymer substrate. This method also benefited from differences in the work of adhesion at

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a versatile class of crystalline porous materials with growing potential in pharmaceutical and biomedical applications due to their structural precision, modular chemistry, tunable porosity, and emerging biocompatibility. Unlike prior reviews centered mainly on individual applications, this review adopts a structure-property-bioperformance-translation framework to clarify how COF design governs biological function and clinical promise. We analyze how linkage chemistry, topology, pore environment, surface properties, and particle engineering influence prot

Unlike muscles, man-made shape-morphing biomaterials take much longer times to perform their actuation. Here we report a novel class of protein-based actuators that mimic muscle contraction through ethanol-induced fibril formation in bovine serum albumin (BSA) hydrogels, enabling reversible shape changes and fast, water-driven motion. These structural changes result in mechanical stiffening, enabling programmable and reversible shape changes, which take place over minutes to hours. At intermediate ethanol concentrations (40-80%), fibril formation dominates and contributes to shape retention, w

Gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) is a widely used photocrosslinkable biomaterial, yet routine laboratory synthesis is constrained by multi-day dialysis required to remove cytotoxic methacrylic anhydride (MAA) and methacrylic acid (MA). Here we introduce a simple post-reaction precipitation of GelMA in ethanol (EtOH) as a faster purification route. EtOH precipitation combined with cooling increased the isolated yield after purification (up to + 17.5% versus the control) and markedly accelerated impurity removal, reaching commercially relevant residue benchmark (< 30 ppm) within 2 days, whereas the

Approximately 150 million people worldwide wear contact lenses, and most wear them successfully. However, contact lens wear is a major risk factor for developing infections and inflammation of the eye. This review outlines the need for antimicrobial contact lenses to help reduce the incidence of infection and inflammation. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) have been probably the best researched as antimicrobial coatings for contact lenses, with one of these (Mel4) progressing to a successful stage III clinical trial. Other antimicrobials including metals such as silver and selenium, and quorum sen

Granulocytes, long considered short-lived effector cells, are increasingly recognized as key modulators of the foreign body response (FBR) to biomaterials and determinants of regenerative outcomes. This review summarizes current evidence on the roles of neutrophils, basophils, and eosinophils in biomaterial-associated inflammation and tissue remodeling. Particular focus is placed on protein adsorption, cytokine release, and downstream effects across diverse biomaterial classes, including bone substitutes, collagen scaffolds, titanium, magnesium, and synthetic polymers. Neutrophils dominate the

Nitric oxide (NO) is a key signaling molecule involved in many physiological processes including vasodilation, neurotransmission, inflammatory and antimicrobial responses. Despite its therapeutic potential, its clinical utility remains limited due to its extremely short half-life (less than 5 s), high reactivity (with oxygen radicals) and the need for precise spatiotemporal dose control. To overcome these limitations, recent advancements in biomaterials have led to the development of responsive systems capable of delivering NO in a targeted and controlled manner. These systems can respond to e

Articular cartilage, once damaged by trauma or diseases such as osteoarthritis, has a limited capacity for self-repair due to its avascular nature. Repairing this tissue remains a clinical challenge, further complicated by its high mechanical loading, hierarchical architecture, and specialized ionic environment. Current clinical treatments often yield inferior repair tissue and can cause donor-site morbidity. Cartilage tissue engineering (CTE) seeks to overcome these limitations by generating functional tissue in vitro, typically using growth factors to regulate cell migration, proliferation,

Biofilms represent the predominant microbial lifestyle in clinical and environmental settings, where the extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) matrix provides structural integrity, metabolic cooperation, and pronounced antimicrobial tolerance. This matrix forms a dynamic macromolecular network of polysaccharides, proteins, extracellular DNA (eDNA), lipids, and associated ions that collectively regulate hydration, adhesion, diffusion resistance, and persistence. Across ESKAPE (Enterococcus faecium, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumannii, Pseudomonas aeruginosa,

Biophotonic healthcare devices have been widely investigated for photochemical tissue bonding (PTB), photobiomodulation (PBM), photodynamic therapy (PDT), and photothermal therapy (PTT). However, their clinical applications remain limited due to the short light penetration depth and the incompliant light source, including externally powered light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Here, we present a stretchable photonic patch embedded with biocompatible room light- and sunlight-activatable luminescent particles (RSLPs) in an elastomeric matrix. This patch enables ambient light-activatable phototherapy wi
