Climate change and the emerging ecology of helminthiases: a One Health perspective integrating microbial and environmental drivers.

Helminthiases affect more than one billion people worldwide and remain tightly linked to environmental conditions, yet they are often underrepresented in discussions of climate-sensitive infectious diseases. As global temperatures rise and ecosystems shift, the life cycles, geographic distributions, and transmission dynamics of parasitic helminths are being reshaped in complex and sometimes contrasting ways. Here, we argue that helminthiases should be understood as ecological outcomes emerging from interactions among climatic drivers, environmental conditions, microbial communities, and host p

The costs of climate change: a study of cholera in Tanzania.

Increased temperatures and changes in rainfall patterns as a result of climate change are widely recognized to entail potentially serious consequences for human health, including an increased risk of diarrheal diseases. This study integrates historical data on temperature and rainfall with the burden of disease from cholera in Tanzania and uses socioeconomic data to control for the impacts of general development on the risk of cholera. The results show a significant relationship between temperature and the incidence of cholera. For a 1 degree Celsius temperature increase the initial relative r

Environmental consequences of interacting effects of changes in stratospheric ozone, ultraviolet radiation, and climate: UNEP Environmental Effects Assessment Panel, Update 2024.

This Assessment Update by the Environmental Effects Assessment Panel (EEAP) of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) addresses the interacting effects of changes in stratospheric ozone, solar ultraviolet (UV) radiation, and climate on the environment and human health. These include new modelling studies that confirm the benefits of the Montreal Protocol in protecting the stratospheric ozone layer and its role in maintaining a stable climate, both at low and high latitudes. We also provide an update on projected levels of solar UV-radiation during the twenty-first century. Potential e

Delineating the Seasonality of Varicella and Its Association With Climate in the Tropical Country of Colombia.

BACKGROUND: Varicella causes a major health burden in many low- to middle-income countries located in tropical regions. Because of the lack of surveillance data, however, the epidemiology of varicella in these regions remains uncharacterized. In this study, based on an extensive dataset of weekly varicella incidence in children ≤10 during 2011-2014 in 25 municipalities, we aimed to delineate the seasonality of varicella across the diverse tropical climates of Colombia. METHODS: We used generalized additive models to estimate varicella seasonality, and we used clustering and matrix correlation

Underestimated agricultural losses due to flooding.

Flooding poses a growing threat to global food security in a warming climate, yet a critical gap remains in quantifying flood-induced agricultural losses, hindering the design of effective adaptations to potential food crises. Here, we present a methodological framework for projecting crop losses from flooding, using a flooding stress algorithm to refine yield simulations from existing crop models. This approach ensures that simulated yield reductions for maize, soybean, and wheat align with observations in the United States and demonstrates strong agreement between estimated and reported floo

Fast expansion and slow contraction of the ITCZ in response to CO2 forcing.

The Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) strongly shapes tropical rainfall and global circulation, yet its response to carbon dioxide (CO2) forcing remains uncertain. Climate models project a long-term narrowing of the ITCZ under warming, but recent decades instead show a poleward expansion linked to eastern tropical Pacific cooling. Using a 30-member ensemble of abruptly quadrupled CO2 experiments, we identify a two-phase evolution: a fast expansion over the first decade, driven by basin-wide relative cooling in the equatorial Pacific, followed by a slow contraction as equatorial warming str…

Climate extremes intensify global lake eutrophication by increasing the stress resistance of harmful bloom-forming algae.

Lake eutrophication is increasingly shaped by climate extremes, but how short-lived events yield persistent blooms remains unclear. Using global satellite records and laboratory and field experiments, here we show that heatwaves and extreme precipitation drive bloom dynamics beyond gradual warming. In harmful bloom-forming algae (HBFA), heatwaves trigger oxidative stress that rapidly induces intracellular polyphosphate and stabilisomes, dense polyphosphate-rich organelles. As intracellular ballast, stabilisomes drive downward migration, enabling access to sediment-derived phosphorus while avoi

Warming induces unexpectedly high soil respiration in a wet tropical forest.

Tropical forests are a dominant regulator of the global carbon cycle, exchanging more carbon dioxide with the atmosphere than any other terrestrial biome. Climate models predict unprecedented climatic warming in tropical regions in the coming decades; however, in situ field warming studies are severely lacking in tropical forests. Here we present results from an in situ warming experiment in Puerto Rico, where soil respiration responses to +4 oC warming were assessed half-hourly for a year. Soil respiration rates were 42-204% higher in warmed relative to ambient plots, representing some of the…

Climate and urbanization drive changes in the habitat suitability of Schistosoma mansoni competent snails in Brazil.

Schistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease caused by Schistosoma parasites. Schistosoma are obligate parasites of freshwater Biomphalaria and Bulinus snails, thus controlling snail populations is critical to reducing transmission risk. As snails are sensitive to environmental conditions, we expect their distribution is significantly impacted by global change. Here, we used machine learning, remote sensing, and 30 years of snail occurrence records to map the historical and current distribution of forward-transmitting Biomphalaria hosts throughout Brazil. We identified key features influenc

Dataset of top-down nitrogen oxides fire emission estimation in northeastern Asia.

Fire emission is a major source of atmospheric nitrogen oxides (NOx = NO2 + NO), accounting for a large part of global NOx emission, which profoundly changes atmosphere physicochemical property and impacts human society. An effective evaluation of these impacts relies on accurate NOx fire emission estimation. In this article, we developed a full top-down NOx fire emission dataset for northeastern Asia based on the satellite-derived emission coefficient (EC) and fire radiative power (FRP) density. In the dataset, daily NOx fire emissions during 2012-2019 were estimated at 1°x1° resolution acros

Early-warning prediction of visceral leishmaniasis mortality using a multivariate STL-deep learning hybrid approach on 20 years of monthly time series.

INTRODUCTION: Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a preventable disease, but continues to cause mortality in Sudan, with transmission dynamics and potentially fatal outcomes strongly affected by local environmental conditions. METHODS: This research presents an innovative hybrid forecasting framework that amalgamates Seasonal-Trend decomposition using Loess (STL) with four sophisticated models: Gaussian Process Regression (GPR), Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), Temporal Pattern Attention-LSTM (TPA-LSTM), and Light Gradient Boosting Machine (LightGBM), to forecast climate-induced multivariate VL mort

Attitudes toward gender equality in sport among Europeans.

INTRODUCTION: This study examines the role of societal, interpersonal, and individual factors in explaining Europeans' attitudes toward gender equality in sport and the role of interactions between gender, age, and social class. METHODS: The empirical analysis uses survey data from residents in 27 European countries in 2022 (n = 19,396). Respondents' attitudes toward gender equality in sport are captured by two statements about evenly following female and male sport in the media and the inspirational potential of female role models among managers, athletes, officials, and coaches. Use of soil moisture active passive satellite data and WorldClim 2.0 data to predict the potential distribution of visceral leishmaniasis and its vector Lutzomyia longipalpis in Sao Paulo and Bahia states, Brazil.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is a neglected tropical disease transmitted by Lutzomyia longipalpis, a sand fly widely distributed in Brazil. Despite efforts to strengthen national control programs reduction in incidence and geographical distribution of VL in Brazil has not yet been successful; VL is in fact expanding its range in newly urbanized areas. Ecological niche models (ENM) for use in surveillance and response systems may enable more effective operational VL control by mapping risk areas and elucidation of eco-epidemiologic risk factors. ENMs for VL and Lu. longipalpis were generated usi

Risk mapping and early warning systems for the control of meningitis in Africa.

Epidemics of meningococcal meningitis in Africa have plagued the continent for over a century. These epidemics have a strong association with the environment and efforts are being made to develop models to predict both their location and their incidence. This review describes the predictive models based on climate/environmental information currently available, describes work in progress, and presents evidence that the distribution of the epidemics is changing in a pattern that is compatible with changes in the environment. Discussion of priorities for research in the context of the new conjuga

Spatio-temporal machine learning for multi-horizon prediction of bluetongue outbreaks.

Reliable early warning of infectious disease outbreaks remains a major challenge for surveillance systems, particularly for vector-borne pathogens whose transmission depends on interactions among hosts, vectors, and climate-sensitive environmental conditions. Data-driven forecasting offers a promising approach for predicting outbreak risk using surveillance and environmental data. This study develops a logit-weighted ensemble (LWE), a machine-learning framework that predicts outbreak occurrence 1-6 months ahead at the administrative unit-month scale using routinely available outbreak notificat

Impact of global change on the distribution of mountain mammals and birds.

Climate change and land-use changes are key drivers of global biodiversity loss. Many species are shifting to higher elevations or latitudes in response to global warming, often encountering unfavorable land-use conditions during the shift. These changes can lead to reduced range size and increased extinction risks, particularly for mountain species that are often confined to narrow high-altitude habitats. Predicting future distributions of mountain species requires accounting for their bioclimatic responses, topographical distribution, land-use preferences, and ability to colonize new areas v

Mechanistic drivers of climate-induced reproductive collapse in African catfish: Multi-stressor interactions under IPCC scenarios.

Climate change is increasingly disrupting freshwater ecosystems in sub-Saharan Africa, posing severe threats to the reproductive success and population viability of key fish species. This study investigated the mechanistic effects of elevated temperature across a gradient and the combined impact of elevated temperature, acidification and hypoxia under a simulated future climate scenario (IPCC SSP5-8.5) on the reproductive physiology and early life stages of Clarias gariepinus in the Cross River Estuary. Single-stressor trials examined the effect of temperature (28-38°C) on oestrogen synthesis,

Climate change and infertility: global evidence on temperature-related reproductive risks and demographic vulnerability.

The global infertility crisis and the escalating challenges of climate change are becoming increasingly and inextricably intertwined. However, a fundamental question remains unresolved: do the observed reproductive risks primarily stem from the cumulative impact of sustained temperature increases, or from the growing frequency and intensity of short-term temperature fluctuations? Using data from the Global Burden of Disease study for 1990–2019, we examined associations between mean temperature (MT), short-term temperature variability, represented by diurnal temperature range, temperature chang
