Balloon catheter assisted excision of benign cervical cyst.

OBJECTIVES: Benign cystic masses that develop in the neck are easily excised with a wide skin incision. However, if the cyst is perforated and the contour of the cyst is not maintained during surgery, complete excision may be difficult. We developed a surgical method that can maintain the contour of a cyst and decrease the wound size with a balloon catheter. METHODS: Two cases with a branchial cleft cyst (BCC) were removed using this method without recurrence. The surgical technique includes a skin incision above the cyst, and fine dissection to expose the cyst wall. Then a small tap incision

Skin excision and osteophyte removal is not required in the surgical treatment of digital myxoid cysts.

BACKGROUND: Digital myxoid cysts (DMCs) are ganglia of the adjacent distal interphalangeal joint (DIPJ) caused by leakage of fluid from the joint into the surrounding tissues. The connection between the DIPJ and the cyst can be identified by the injection of methylene blue into the DIPJ. However, the injection of methylene blue into the DIPJ is difficult and time-consuming. Based on this understanding of the cause of DMCs, we have used a surgical technique to treat DMCs without the need for skin excision. Herein, we have adapted the technique and demonstrated that precise leakage point identif

Intracranial white epidermoid cyst with dystrophic calcification - A case report and literature review.

White epidermoids are a rare variant of an intracranial epidermoid cyst that do not exhibit typical 'near- cerebrospinal fluid (CSF)' CT density or MRI intensity. Here, the authors present the case of a 58year old man with an acute onset of aphasia and altered consciousness, due to a large heterogeneous cranial mass in the left frontal region with unusual signal intensity. Subsequent histopathological analysis identified the lesion as an epidermoid cyst.

Spongiosis Hepatis in a Wild Aquarium-Maintained Red Irish Lord.

An aquarium-maintained female Red Irish Lord Hemilepidotus hemilepidotus presented with severe coelomic distension. The fish was anesthetized for ultrasonographic examination, which highlighted multiple cyst-like lesions in the liver and a distended ovary that was filled with follicles and an inspissated egg mass. Multiple exploratory celiotomies were performed for egg mass removal, liver biopsy, ovariosalpingectomy, and body wall rupture repair. Fourteen weeks after original presentation, and subsequent to 2 weeks of anorexia, the fish died. At necropsy, the liver was severely enlarged and di

Glycogen synthase kinase-3β promotes cyst expansion in polycystic kidney disease.

Polycystic kidney diseases (PKDs) are inherited disorders characterized by the formation of fluid filled renal cysts. Elevated cAMP levels in PKDs stimulate progressive cyst enlargement involving cell proliferation and transepithelial fluid secretion often leading to end-stage renal disease. The glycogen synthase kinase-3 (GSK3) family of protein kinases consists of GSK3α and GSK3β isoforms and has a crucial role in multiple cellular signaling pathways. We previously found that GSK3β, a regulator of cell proliferation, is also crucial for cAMP generation and vasopressin-mediated urine concentr

[Aneurysmal cyst of the mandible: radiologic approach and therapy of this benign tumor].

The authors present a case of mandibular aneurysmal bone cyst with emphasis on the radiological aspects. The presence of fluid-fluid levels on CT and MR images is highly suggestive of ABC especially where there is no evidence of solid lesion. These findings help narrow differential diagnoses before making a therapeutic decision.

Hepatic cysts: a survival guide.

Hepatic cysts are quite common in the daily practice of radiologists and are generally described as simple cysts or as cystic lesions sparsely distributed throughout the parenchyma, often without the discrimination they merit. Simple cysts have, by definition, thin walls, one or two thin septa, and homogeneous fluid content. Such cysts include congenital epithelial cysts, biliary hamartomas, and peribiliary cysts, as well as those representing Caroli's disease or polycystic liver disease. Complex cysts have variable walls, septa, and contents. They also have various etiologies. A detailed asse

Diagnosis and surgical treatment of bronchogenic cysts.

Between 1974 and 1993, 22 patients with bronchogenic cysts were operated on in our hospital; there were 14 men and 8 women, ranging in age from 11 to 62 years. The cyst locations were mediastinal in 13 (59.1%) and intrapulmonary in 9 (40.9%). There were symptoms (chest pain and recurrent bronchiolitis) in 20 patients (91%). The preoperative complications included infection in the lung and in the cyst and dysphagia due to esophageal compression. Chest pain was the main symptom in mediastinal cyst and recurrent infection of lung in intrapulmonary cyst. Plain chest radiograms showed that a round

Symptomatic Expanding Porencephalic Cyst after Evacuation of Intracerebral Hematoma in an Adult: A Case Report.

Porencephalic cysts are very rare in adults. Herein, we present a case of an 88-year-old man with a symptomatic expanding porencephalic cyst after intracerebral hematoma evacuation. He was admitted because of disturbed consciousness and right hemiparesis. A computed tomography (CT) showed a large subcortical hematoma in the left parietal lobe. Hematoma evacuation was performed, his consciousness level improved but gradually deteriorated. Follow-up CT revealed a new cystic lesion with perifocal edema at the hematoma site, with progressive expansion of the cyst. Cyst drainage and -peritoneal shu

Bilateral ectopic third molar in the maxillary sinuses associated with dentigerous cyst: a case report.

A dentigerous cyst is an epithelial-lined odontogenic cyst formed by an accumulation of fluid between the reduced enamel epithelium and the crown of an unerupted tooth. About 70% of dentigerous cysts occur in the mandible and 30% in the maxilla and the most involved teeth are maxillary canines and maxillary third molars. Dentigerous cysts often displace the related tooth into an ectopic position. In the maxilla, when the cyst expands into the sinus, it usually causes total or partial occupation of the sinus cavity and can extend to the nose. We report a rare case of a 24-year-old woman with bi

Case Report: Bronchogenic Cyst in the Right Atrium of a Young Woman.

A 31-year-old woman was referred to our hospital for evaluation of a cardiac mass in the right atrium. Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging indicated a cystic mass filled with fluid accumulation in the right atrium. The mass was identified as a cardiac cyst and was surgically removed. Pathological examination revealed an extremely rare bronchogenic cyst. Bronchogenic cysts are benign congenital abnormalities of primitive foregut origins that form in the mediastinum during embryonic development. There is unusual clinical dilemmas surrounding the treatment plan for cardiac surgery or biopsy of car

A case of symptomatic Rathke's cyst.

Rathke's cleft cyst is a benign growth found on the pituitary gland in the brain, specifically a fluid-filled cyst in the posterior portion of the anterior pituitary gland. It occurs when the Rathke's pouch does not develop properly, and ranges in size from 2 to 40 mm in diameter. Asymptomatic cysts are common, detected during autopsies of 2-26% of individuals who have died of unrelated causes. Symptomatic cysts are rare and only approximately 150 cases have been reported. Females are twice as likely as males to have a cyst. Symptomatic cysts can trigger visual disturbances, pituitary dysfunct

[Intestinal duplication cyst in children: laparoscopically assisted resection is preferred].

A 5-year-old boy was seen for a second opinion as he had episodes of severe abdominal pain and a variably distended abdomen. Ultrasonography showed a suspected duplication cyst of the terminal ileum. A laparoscopically assisted resection was performed. Histology confirmed the diagnosis of a duplication cyst. A few months later a 10-year-old boy presented with a history of abdominal pain, diarrhoea and vomiting. Abdominal ultrasonography showed an intussusception halfway up the transverse colon where a cyst was seen with a fluid level. The intussusception was reduced during laparoscopy and rese

[2 cases of duodenal duplication].

Two cases of duodenal duplication are reported. It is a rare disease and is found commonly during infancy. Symptoms of partial duodenal obstruction are dominating the clinical picture. Upper gastrointestinal contrast radiography seems to be the best paraclinical examination. The surgical treatment is governed by the relationship of the cyst to the biliary and pancreatic ducts and the presence of ectopic gastric mucosa. If total resection of the cyst implicates a danger of injury to the common bile duct and the head of the pancreas and when one is tempted to perform a cystoenterostomy, the auth

Parathyroid hormone (PTH) assay of parathyroid cysts examined by fine-needle aspiration biopsy.

The authors report three cases of parathyroid cysts examined by the fine-needle aspiration biopsy technic. A presumptive diagnosis of parathyroid cyst was made when characteristic water-clear fluid was aspirated. The diagnosis was then confirmed by parathyroid hormone (PTH) assay. The authors believe that the C-terminal/midmolecule determination should be the assay of choice, because the N-terminal-specific assay gave normal or slightly elevated results in all the cases studied. If only an N-terminal-specific PTH assay is obtained, potential for a false negative diagnosis exists. With a correc

The aetiology and treatment of simple bone cysts.

The internal pressure of simple bone cysts was found to be slightly higher than the normal pressure of the bone marrow in the contralateral limb. The pressure within the cyst was measured during drilling with a Kirschner wire; it gradually decreased as the number of drill-holes increased. The PO2 of the cyst fluid was markedly lower than that of either venous or arterial blood measured synchronously. It is suggested that venous obstruction in the bone is the likely cause of these cysts. Seven patients with simple bone cysts were treated by the multiple drill-hole method, and the clinical outco…

Interaction dynamics between epithelial cysts captured by tissue rheology.

Epithelial cysts are minimal structures involved in morphogenesis. They are fluid-filled cavities surrounded by an epithelial monolayer. During development, cyst grow and their interactions shape organs. While their growth dynamics as single structures are well characterized, physical mechanisms underlying their interaction remain poorly understood. Here, we design a minimal assay of interacting cyst doublets based on microfabrication, quantitative biology, and theory to show that Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cysts interaction is essentially determined by rheological properties of their ep

EP2 receptor mediates PGE2-induced cystogenesis of human renal epithelial cells.

Autosomal-dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is characterized by formation of cysts from tubular epithelial cells. Previous studies indicate that secretion of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) into cyst fluid and production of cAMP underlie cyst expansion. However, the mechanism by which PGE2 directly stimulates cAMP formation and modulates cystogenesis is still unclear, because the particular E-prostanoid (EP) receptor mediating the PGE2 effect has not been characterized. Our goal is to define the PGE2 receptor subtype involved in ADPKD. We used a three-dimensional cell-culture system of human …
