To investigate whether the properties of the flow-controlling zone (FCZ) in obstructive benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) would be affected by differences in the histological architecture of the prostate, we evaluated relationships between morphometric and urodynamic data. BPH specimens from 14 patients undergoing transurethral surgery were analysed by quantitative morphometry. Histologic, immunohistochemical, and ultrastructural studies were performed on 12 floppy mitral valves, 4 mitral valves showing focal myxomatous changes without prolapse, and 3 normal mitral valves. We report the case of a 57-year-old woman who was found to have a mass in the anterior mediastinum. Surgical excision of the mass revealed a well-delimited lesion 10 cm in largest diameter. Histologically, the mass was composed of mature fat alternating with sclerotic connective tissue, which also contained extensive eosinophilic deposits, similar to the abnormal elastic fibers seen in elastofibroma dorsi. Although the concept of manipulating laryngeal biomechanics to improve vocal function is not new, there has been a recent proliferation in surgical techniques used to affect laryngeal function. The function of organic sphincter systems cannot be described by measuring a static pressure, but only by applying a dynamic procedure of measurement that takes into account the characteristics of smooth muscles. Therefore, the elastance-method has been developed.
