Twenty-seven children undergoing surgery for suspected pelviureteric junction obstruction were studied by pre-operative diuresis renography. The results obtained by this test were compared with histological and histochemical studies of the resected specimens of renal pelvis. A significant correlation was found between these methods of assessment. In addition, the morphological appearances of the renal pelvis tended to show more marked changes in the younger children.

Partial obstruction of one ureter was created in newborn rats and its effects were studied in the adult rat. The obstructed renal pelvis was found to be enlarged 10x. The parenchymal weight of this kidney was reduced by 8 per cent, primarily because of destruction of the papilla, and was completely compensated for by hypertrophy of the contralateral kidney. A high correlation was found between true volumes and areas on urography. The turnover time for urine in the hydronephrotic pelvis ranged from 47 to 473 min. The implications of this measurement for clearance values are discussed.

Giant hydronephrosis extending beyond the midline can cause marked dilatation of the renal pelvis and significant anatomical distortion. This distortion makes intraoperative visualization, identification of the ureteropelvic junction (UPJ), and planning of the anastomosis challenging. Liposarcoma represents 20-30% of adult soft tissue tumors, which was most frequently seen in the retroperitoneal space in 45% and abdominal space in only 5% of cases, but the multicentric case is unknown. We report here a case of acute lymphoblastic leukemia in remission presenting a late-onset bilateral hydronephrosis probably due to polyoma BK virus-induced proliferation of bladder endothelium on both ostii. The diagnosis was made virologically by BK virus Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) detection in the absence of any other bladder disease. Awareness of this late complication is necessary not only in patients after renal transplantation but also in patients after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation from matched unrelated donor.
