An artificial neural network model based on autophagy-related genes in childhood systemic lupus erythematosus.

BACKGROUND: Childhood systemic lupus erythematosus (cSLE) is a multisystemic, life-threatening autoimmune disease. Compared to adults, SLE in childhood is more active, can cause multisystem involvement including renal, neurological and hematological, and can cause cumulative damage across systems more rapidly. Autophagy, one of the core functions of cells, is involved in almost every process of the immune response and has been shown to be associated with many autoimmune diseases, being a key factor in the interplay between innate and adaptive immunity. Autophagy influences the onset, progressi

Typical resting-state activity of the brain requires visual input during an early sensitive period.

Sensory deprivation, following a total loss of one sensory modality e.g. vision, has been demonstrated to result in compensatory plasticity. It is yet not known to which extent neural changes, e.g. higher resting-state activity in visual areas (cross-modal plasticity) as a consequence of blindness, reverse, when sight is restored. Here, we used functional MRI to acquire blood oxygen level-dependent resting-state activity during an eyes open and an eyes closed state in congenital cataract-reversal individuals, developmental cataract-reversal individuals, congenitally permanently blind individua

Upper esophageal sphincter mechanical states analysis: a novel methodology to describe UES relaxation and opening.

The swallowing muscles that influence upper esophageal sphincter (UES) opening are centrally controlled and modulated by sensory information. Activation of neural inputs to these muscles, the intrinsic cricopharyngeus muscle and extrinsic suprahyoid muscles, results in their contraction or relaxation, which changes the diameter of the lumen, alters the intraluminal pressure and ultimately inhibits or promotes flow of content. This relationship that exists between the changes in diameter and concurrent changes in intraluminal pressure has been used previously to calculate the "mechanical states

WHOLE BRAIN GROUP NETWORK ANALYSIS USING NETWORK BIAS AND VARIANCE PARAMETERS.

The disruption of normal function and connectivity of neural circuits is common across many diseases and disorders of the brain. This disruptive effect can be studied and analyzed using the brain's complex functional and structural connectivity network. Complex network measures from the field of graph theory have been used for this purpose in the literature. In this paper we have introduced a new approach for analyzing the brain connectivity network. In our approach the true connectivity network and each subject's bias and variance are estimated using a population of patients and healthy contr

Brain mapping in dysphonemic dyslexia: in resting and phonemic discrimination conditions.

Topographic mapping of EEG bands and alpha asymmetry were analyzed during resting conditions and an auditory phonemic discrimination task (APD) in carefully screened samples of 9.0- to 12-year-old control and dysphonemic-sequencing dyslexic children. The EEG was recorded over the entire scalp, with a linked ears reference. We found: (1) no differences between groups during resting conditions in any frequency band analyzed; (2) a left hemisphere alpha responsiveness in dyslexic children during the APD condition; and (3) a beta 2 decrease in the left posterior quadrant in dyslexics during the AP

Human single-neuron recordings reveal population coding of attentional dynamics during naturalistic movie viewing.

Our eyes move constantly. Where they land is shaped by internal cognitive state, making eye movements a rare, non-invasive window onto that state. However, how moment-to-moment eye-movements map onto human neural population activity during naturalistic viewing remains poorly characterized. We analyzed a public intracranial dataset in which 14 neurosurgical patients watched an eight-minute movie during simultaneous eye-tracking and neuronal activity recording. Single-neuron activity from 814 neurons across anterior cingulate cortex, pre-supplementary motor area, amygdala, hippocampus, and ventr

Functional symmetry and reproducibility of the evolutionary process.

The question on the reproducibility of evolutionary processes is primarily of fundamental importance; however, with the development of methods for modeling evolutionary processes on computer multilevel models, an answer to this question is necessary to clarify the status of the predictions obtained. Experimental obtaining of ensembles of evolutionary outcomes for subsequent statistical processing on real biological systems seems to be impracticable. At the same time, the results obtained on multilevel computer models are difficult to interpret due to their complexity and the dependence of mode

Altered Regional Brain Activity and Functional Connectivity Between Non-Diabetic and Diabetic Kidney Disease: A Resting-State fMRI Study.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with chronic kidney disease often exhibit impaired brain function; however, the differences between those with non-diabetic kidney disease (non-DKD) and diabetic kidney disease (DKD) remain poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate alterations in resting-state brain activity in patients with non-DKD and DKD. METHODS: Thirty non-DKD patients, thirty DKD patients, and twenty-nine healthy controls underwent laboratory examinations and resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI). The brain activity was analyzed using the amplitude of low-frequency

Task context is broadly encoded in the human brain.

Cognitive control depends on the task context as a top-down modulatory influence on ongoing processing. Cognitive neuroscience theories of cognitive control have associated the maintenance of context, and its deployment as a control signal, with neural populations in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC). Importantly, however, the way information about the task context is propagated and used throughout the brain remains largely unspecified. A longstanding hypothesis is that neural representations of context in DLPFC directly influence neural processing only where this information is neede

Clinical efficacy of NIBS in enhancing neuroplasticity for stroke recovery.

BACKGROUND: For stroke patients, a therapeutic approach named Non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) was applied and it has gained attention. This NIBS approach enhances the neuroplasticity and facilitates in functional Stroke Rehabilitation (SR) through regulating the brain activity. This NIBS has several advantages, but, the variability in patient responses, poor personalized treatment plans, and challenges in predicting rehabilitation stages may limit its clinical application. The generalized approaches are usually employed by the current SR methods. Here, the Patient-Centric (PC) factors th

Predicting ADC map quality from T2-weighted MRI: A deep learning approach for early quality assessment to assist point-of-care.

PURPOSE: Poor quality prostate MRI images compromise diagnostic accuracy, with diffusion-weighted imaging and the resulting apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) maps being particularly vulnerable. These maps are critical for prostate cancer diagnosis, yet current methods relying on standardizing technical parameters fail to consistently ensure image quality. We propose a novel deep learning approach to predict low-quality ADC maps using T2-weighted (T2W) images, enabling real-time corrective interventions during imaging. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A multi-site dataset of T2W images and ADC maps f

Validation, optimization, and quality assessment of a neuro-behavioral in vivo assay for phenotypic high-content evaluation of anesthetics.

In vivo assays based on aquatic model organisms have played a pivotal role in the development of anesthetics and their pharmacological and physiological characterization. They have been designed primarily as cost-effective tools for initial screening of compounds, prioritizing high throughput and simple measurement of a behavioral readout. Common limitations include manual recoding and analysis of behavioral readouts, thereby introducing potential bias; focus on the binary endpoints of a single behavior; restriction of the assessment of drug effects to the behavioral level, thus being agnostic

Exploring the correlation between frequency-dependent brain activity and cognitive function in social anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a prevalent psychiatric disorder, yet its underlying neural mechanisms remain unclear. Patients with SAD often show cognitive impairments associated with brain dysfunction. However, no study has examined the relationship between frequency-dependent brain activity and cognitive performance in SAD using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) and neuropsychological assessments. In this study, we examined this association in patients with SAD using rs-fMRI. METHODS: rs-fMRI data were collected from 27 patients with SAD and 40 hea

Investigating attentional bias in low-dependence smokers with steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEPs): Linking wanting, liking, and neural responses.

While traditional electrophysiological measures such as ERPs have been successfully used to study individual differences, their signal-to-noise ratio often limits the precision of single-subject analyses. To address this, the present study had two primary aims: (1) to explore the utility of steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) method for investigating addiction-specific cognitive processes and (2) to examine the relationship between the imbalance of self-reported wanting and liking, and the neural correlates of tobacco smoking-related attentional bias. A total of 39 participants, inclu
