A multi-layer neural network approach for the stability analysis of the Hepatitis B model.

In the present study, we explore the dynamics of Hepatitis B virus infection, a significant global health issue, through a newly developed dynamics system. This model is distinguished by its inclusion of asymptomatic carriers and the impact of vaccination and treatment strategies. Compared to Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B poses a more serious health risk, with some cases progressing from acute to chronic. To diagnose and predict disease recurrence, the basic reproduction number (R0) is calculated. We investigate the stability of the disease's dynamics under different conditions, using the Lyapunov

Coupling machine learning and physical modelling for predicting runoff at catchment scale.

In this paper, we present an approach that combines data-driven and physical modelling for predicting the runoff occurrence and volume at catchment scale. With that aim, we first estimated the runoff volume from recorded storms aided by the Green-Ampt infiltration model. Then, we used machine learning algorithms, namely LightGBM (LGBM) and Deep Neural Network (DNN), to predict the outputs of the physical model fed on a set of atmospheric variables (relative humidity, temperature, atmospheric pressure, and wind velocity) collected before or immediately after the beginning of the storm. Results

Enhancing soil texture classification with multivariate scattering correction and residual neural networks using visible near-infrared spectra.

Soil texture is one of the most important indicators of soil physical properties, which has traditionally been measured through laborious procedures. Approaches utilizing visible near-infrared spectroscopy, with their advantages in efficiency, eco-friendliness and non-destruction, are emerging as potent alternatives. Nevertheless, these approaches often suffer from limitations in classification accuracy, and the substantial impact of spectral preprocessing, model integration, and sample matrix effect is commonly disregarded. Here a novel 11-class soil texture classification strategy that addre

Comparative Bladder Cancer Tissues Prediction Using Vision Transformer.

Bladder cancer, often asymptomatic in the early stages, is a type of cancer where early detection is crucial. Herein, endoscopic images are meticulously evaluated by experts, and sometimes even by different disciplines, to identify tissue types. It is believed that the time spent by experts can be utilized for patient treatment with the creation of a computer-aided decision support system. For this purpose, in this study, it is evaluated that the performances of three models proposed using the bladder tissue dataset. The first model is a convolutional neural network (CNN)-based deep learning (

Predicting extremely low body weight from 12-lead electrocardiograms using a deep neural network.

Previous studies have successfully predicted overweight status by applying deep learning to 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG); however, models for predicting underweight status remain unexplored. Here, we assessed the feasibility of deep learning in predicting extremely low body weight using 12-lead ECGs, thereby investigating the prediction rationale for highlighting the parts of ECGs that are associated with extremely low body weight. Using records of inpatients predominantly with anorexia nervosa, we trained a convolutional neural network (CNN) that inputs a 12-lead ECG and outputs a binary p

Predictive modeling of hepatitis B viral dynamics: a caputo derivative-based approach using artificial neural networks.

A fractional model for the kinetics of hepatitis B transmission was developed. The hepatitis B virus significantly affects the world's economic and health systems. Acute and chronic carrier phases play a crucial part in the spread of the HBV infection. The Hepatitis B infection can be spread by chronic carriers even though they show no symptoms. In this article, we looked into the Hepatitis B virus's various stages of infection-related transmission and built a nonlinear epidemic. Then, a fractional hepatitis B virus model using a Caputo derivative and vaccine effects is created. First, we dete

Attention-Based Fusion of Ultrashort Voice Utterances and Depth Videos for Multimodal Person Identification.

Multimodal deep learning, in the context of biometrics, encounters significant challenges due to the dependence on long speech utterances and RGB images, which are often impractical in certain situations. This paper presents a novel solution addressing these issues by leveraging ultrashort voice utterances and depth videos of the lip for person identification. The proposed method utilizes an amalgamation of residual neural networks to encode depth videos and a Time Delay Neural Network architecture to encode voice signals. In an effort to fuse information from these different modalities, we in

AMAnD: an automated metagenome anomaly detection methodology utilizing DeepSVDD neural networks.

The composition of metagenomic communities within the human body often reflects localized medical conditions such as upper respiratory diseases and gastrointestinal diseases. Fast and accurate computational tools to flag anomalous metagenomic samples from typical samples are desirable to understand different phenotypes, especially in contexts where repeated, long-duration temporal sampling is done. Here, we present Automated Metagenome Anomaly Detection (AMAnD), which utilizes two types of Deep Support Vector Data Description (DeepSVDD) models; one trained on taxonomic feature space output by

Classification of Mental Stress Levels using EEG Connectivity and Convolutional Neural Networks.

Classifying mental stress is important as it helps in identifying the type and severity of stress, which can inform the most appropriate treatment or intervention. In this study, we propose utilizing electroencephalography (EEG) signals with convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to classify four mental states: rest, control-alert, stress and stress mitigation. The mental stress state was induced using Stroop color word test (SCWT) with time constrains and was then mitigated using 16 Hz Binaural beat stimulation (BBs). We quantified the four mental states using the reaction time (RT) to stimuli,

Development of predictive models for lymphedema by using blood tests and therapy data.

Lymphedema is a disease that refers to tissue swelling caused by an accumulation of protein-rich fluid that is usually drained through the lymphatic system. Detection of lymphedema is often based on expensive diagnoses such as bioimpedance spectroscopy, shear wave elastography, computed tomography, etc. In current machine learning models for lymphedema prediction, reliance on observable symptoms reported by patients introduces the possibility of errors in patient-input data. Moreover, these symptoms are often absent during the initial stages of lymphedema, creating challenges in its early dete

EyeCNN: exploring the potential of convolutional neural networks for identification of multiple eye diseases through retinal imagery.

BACKGROUND: The eyes are the most important part of the human body as these are directly connected to the brain and help us perceive the imagery in daily life whereas, eye diseases are mostly ignored and underestimated until it is too late. Diagnosing eye disorders through manual diagnosis by the physician can be very costly and time taking. OBJECTIVE: Thus, to tackle this, a novel method namely EyeCNN is proposed for identifying eye diseases through retinal images using EfficientNet B3. METHODS: A dataset of retinal imagery of three diseases, i.e. Diabetic Retinopathy, Glaucoma, and Catarac

Digital diaphanoscopy of maxillary sinus pathologies supported by machine learning.

Maxillary sinus pathologies remain among the most common ENT diseases requiring timely diagnosis for successful treatment. Standard ENT inspection approaches indicate low sensitivity in detecting maxillary sinus pathologies. In this paper, we report on capabilities of digital diaphanoscopy combined with machine learning tools in the detection of such pathologies. We provide a comparative analysis of two machine learning approaches applied to digital diapahnoscopy data, namely, convolutional neural networks and linear discriminant analysis. The sensitivity and specificity values obtained for bo

Multi-style spatial attention module for cortical cataract classification in AS-OCT image with supervised contrastive learning.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Precise cortical cataract (CC) classification plays a significant role in early cataract intervention and surgery. Anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT) images have shown excellent potential in cataract diagnosis. However, due to the complex opacity distributions of CC, automatic AS-OCT-based CC classification has been rarely studied. In this paper, we aim to explore the opacity distribution characteristics of CC as clinical priori to enhance the representational capability of deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) in CC classification tasks. Use of artificial neural networks to assess train horn noise at a railway level crossing in India.

Urban environment noise is a complex mixture of transportation, industrial, household, and recreational noise, which is identified as an emerging environmental threat. Present study monitors and evaluates a noise pollution hotspot: a railway level crossing, where several activities related to transportation noise were involved. Train honking, train movement, road vehicles, and pedestrians contribute to the noise level at a railway level crossing. Train horns are generally performed as train approach railway level crossings and they are mandatorily used to alert road users. However, the train h

Improving biosensor accuracy and speed using dynamic signal change and theory-guided deep learning.

False results and time delay are longstanding challenges in biosensing. While classification models and deep learning may provide new opportunities for improving biosensor performance, such as measurement confidence and speed, it remains a challenge to ensure that predictions are explainable and consistent with domain knowledge. Here, we show that consistency of deep learning classification model predictions with domain knowledge in biosensing can be achieved by cost function supervision and enables rapid and accurate biosensing using the biosensor dynamic response. The impact and utility of t
