Motor programming in apraxia of speech.

Apraxia of Speech (AOS) is an impairment of motor programming. However, the exact nature of this deficit remains unclear. The present study examined motor programming in AOS in the context of a recent two-stage model [Klapp, S. T. (1995). Motor response programming during simple and choice reaction time: The role of practice. Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, 21, 1015-1027; Klapp, S. T. (2003). Reaction time analysis of two types of motor preparation for speech articulation: Action as a sequence of chunks. Journal of Motor Behavior, 35, 135-150] that propose

Nutrition as therapy - the role of dietitian counseling: a best practice implementation project.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this best practice implementation project was to improve dieticians' professional practice and dietary care through the use of counseling strategies. INTRODUCTION: Improving the design and implementation of evidence-based practice depends on successful behavior change interventions. This requires an appropriate method for designing the interventions and then analyzing the targeted behavior. Behavior change techniques (BCTs) have been demonstrated to improve the patient-dietitian relationship and patient treatment outcomes. METHODS: This evidence-based quality imp

A Spectrum of Selves Reinforced in Multilevel Coherence: A Contextual Behavioural Response to the Challenges of Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy Development.

Psychedelic-assisted therapy research for depression and PTSD has been fast tracked in the United States with the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) granting breakthrough designations for MDMA (post-traumatic stress disorder) and psilocybin (major depressive disorder). The psychotherapeutic treatments accompanying these psychedelics have not been well-studied and remain controversial. This article reviews the challenges unique to psychedelic-assisted therapy and introduces a newly optimised psychological flexibility model that adapts Contextual Behavioural Science (CBS)/Acceptance and Commitm

Nocturnal enuresis in children.

Thousands of Australian children suffer the unhappiness of waking most mornings in a wet bed--almost all can be helped by a sympathetic doctor. Very few of these children have significant organic or psychological problems and little investigation is indicated. Management includes: sympathy and empathy, cessation of unhelpful practices, and conditioning.

Gaming in Medical Education: Promise, Pitfalls, and Practice.

Gaming and gamification have progressively evolved as innovative educational strategies that are increasingly integrated into medical education across the continuum, from pre-clerkship and clinical training to residency and continuing professional development. Advances in educational technologies such as quiz-based platforms, virtual reality (VR), simulation, escape rooms, serious games, and mobile learning applications are increasingly used to promote learner engagement, reinforce knowledge acquisition, and provide psychologically safe opportunities to practice clinical decision-making before

Clinicians' practices and attitudes toward depression assessment: a cross-sectional survey study.

Accurate psychological evaluation is crucial for early detection, intervention and evaluation of mental health disorders. The validity and reliability of psychological evaluation methods have been systematically researched for many decades. However, assessment methods used by mental health professionals in clinical settings have not consistently been empirically documented. This study examines the extent to which standardized assessment methods are used in clinical settings, and clinicians' attitudes toward these practices. Clinicians (N = 585) from the U.S. (25%), the U.K. (28%), the Netherla

Scratching Below the Surface: Screening for Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms Following Hospitalization With the Pediatric Trauma Service.

UNLABELLED: Significant progress has occurred medically for children who have experienced traumatic injuries; however, attention to their psychological adjustment has only more recently been a focus in research and clinical practice. These needs do not cease at discharge but, instead, require monitoring to determine whether further assessment and/or intervention are required. Our team, inclusive of the Psychology Service and the Trauma Service, identified 2 established screening measures (based on age) that were completed by patients during their outpatient follow-up visits postdischarge. Investigating the effect of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction on stress level and brain activity of college students.

Financial constraints usually hinder students, especially those in low-middle income countries (LMICs), from seeking mental health interventions. Hence, it is necessary to identify effective, affordable and sustainable counter-stress measures for college students in the LMICs context. This study examines the sustained effects of mindfulness practice on the psychological outcomes and brain activity of students, especially when they are exposed to stressful situations. Here, we combined psychological and electrophysiological methods (EEG) to investigate the sustained effects of an 8-week-long st

Does prior law enforcement experience affect scores on preemployment psychological testing? An investigation using the MMPI-3.

Most states require that a police candidate's suitability be assessed through preemployment psychological evaluations. Given the psychological stress officers experience in the line of duty, it is possible that experienced candidates would produce scores indicating greater dysfunction on psychological testing relative to inexperienced candidates. No known research has investigated whether police candidates produce different preemployment test scores across experience levels. The present study sought to address this gap in the literature and offer data to guide evaluators' interpretation of tes

Using Statistical Methods to Comparatively Analyze the Visual Characteristics of Flattened Bamboo Boards in Different Bamboo Culms.

Different flattened bamboo boards will produce different visual effects, which directly determine consumers' preferences. However, their visual characteristics were unknown. To clarify the visual effects of flattened bamboo boards in different bamboo culms, the visual, physical, and psychological quantities were firstly studied using their quantitative color and glossiness measurements, combined with quantitative semantic differential and statistical methods. Key results revealed that the values of lightness L* and blue-yellow index b* from the base to the top of the bamboo culms tended to dec

Factors associated with a positive response to the surprise question in complex chronic patients treated by advanced practice nurses in primary care.

BACKGROUND: The “surprise question” (“Would I be surprised if the patient died within the next 12 months?”) is useful to predict the survival of patients and indicate the requirement for further assessment of their palliative care needs. Knowledge of the factors related to healthcare professionals’ response is important to establish the effectiveness of this question to screen for PC needs. The aim of this study is to determine if PC needs, frailty, survival prognosis, complexity, symptom burden, and psychological distress are related to the response of advanced practice nurses to the Surprise
