We present a computational study of the laser-driven quantum dynamics of positronium (Ps), PsH, and PsCl at the time-dependent Hartree-Fock level of theory. To eliminate finite-basis effects and to properly capture continuum dynamics, we use a spherical polar pseudospectral representation. The multicomponent theory and its implementation are described in detail. We find that relative to H- and Cl-, respectively, the presence of the positron delays electron ionization in PsH, while slightly enhancing electron ionization in PsCl. In both cases, the positronic response is faster than that of the

We provide a mathematical analysis of the Dynamical Mean-Field Theory (DMFT), a celebrated representative of a class of approximations in quantum mechanics known as embedding methods. Within the simplest setting of this approximation, which we introduce briefly at this point, we prove that, under certain assumptions, the DMFT equations admit a solution for any set of physical parameters. Moreover, we establish some properties of the solution(s). For the reader's convenience, we provide in appendix a pedagogical and self-contained mathematical formulation of the DMFT equations for the finite Hu

One of the fundamental questions in neuroscience is how brain activity relates to conscious experience. Even though self-consciousness is considered an emergent property of the brain network, a quantum physics-based theory assigns a momentum of consciousness to the single neuron level. In this work, we present a brain self theory from an evolutionary biological perspective by analogy with the immune self. In this scheme, perinatal reactivity to self inputs would guide the selection of neocortical neurons within the subplate, similarly to T lymphocytes in the thymus. Such self-driven neuronal s

CONTEXT: The study of molecular aggregation effects on the electronic spectrum is essential for the development of optoelectronic devices. However, investigating the entire valence absorption spectrum of aggregates using quantum mechanical methods is a challenging task. In this work, we perform systematic simulations of the absorption spectrum of benzene molecular clusters up to 35 eV applying two approaches based on time-dependent density functional theory. The results show that depending on the dimer packing, different energy shifts occur for the symmetry allowed [Formula: see text] transiti

The origin and function of chirality in DNA, proteins, and other building blocks of life represent a central question in biology. Observations of spin polarization and magnetization associated with electron transport through chiral molecules, known collectively as the chiral induced spin selectivity effect, suggest that chirality improves electron transfer. Using reconfigurable nanoscale control over conductivity at the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface, we create chiral electron potentials that explicitly lack mirror symmetry. Quantum transport measurements on these chiral nanowires reveal enhanced ele

Ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) sampling followed by relativistic density functional theory (DFT) 199Hg NMR calculations were performed for Hg organometallic complexes in water, dimethyl sulfoxide, and chloroform. The spin-orbit coupling, a relativistic effect, is a key factor for predicting δ(Hg) and 1J(Hg-C) accurately, in conjunction with a dynamic treatment of the systems. Good agreement between the theoretical and experimental results is reached by adopting implicit (based on a continuum model) and explicit (solvent molecules treated quantum mechanically) solvation models. Quantum dots (QDs) embedded in inorganic matrices have been extensively studied for their potential applications in lighting, displays, and solar cells. While a significant amount of research studies focused on their experimental fabrication, the origin of their relatively low photoluminescence quantum yield has not been investigated yet, although it severely hinders practical applications. In this study, we use time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) to pinpoint the nature of excited states of CdSe QDs embedded in various inorganic matrices. The formation of undercoordinated Se atoms

The vibrational theory of olfaction assumes that electron transfer occurs across odorants at the active sites of odorant receptors (ORs), serving as a sensitive measure of odorant vibrational frequencies, ultimately leading to olfactory perception. A previous study reported that human subjects differentiated hydrogen/deuterium isotopomers (isomers with isotopic atoms) of the musk compound cyclopentadecanone as evidence supporting the theory. Here, we find no evidence for such differentiation at the molecular level. In fact, we find that the human musk-recognizing receptor, OR5AN1, identified u

We present a comprehensive first-principles investigation of the structural, electronic, vibrational, and topological properties of tellurium across its dimensional hierarchy, including bulk trigonal Te-I, two-dimensional tellurene polymorphs, and one-dimensional helical nanowires. Using density functional theory with full inclusion of spin-orbit coupling, we confirm that bulk Te-I is a narrow-gap semiconductor hosting Weyl nodes arising from broken inversion symmetry and degenerate phonon modes suggestive of chiral phonon behavior. In contrast, two-dimensional α- and β-tellurene are found to

We report a joint theoretical-experimental study on the optical properties of 5-N-succinimidyl-2,2'-bithiophene (NS-2T), a prototype system for a new class of biomarkers. Time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) and approximate coupled-cluster single and doubles (CC2) calculations are performed in the ground and excited states. Theoretical results are compared with absorption, photoluminescence (PL), time-resolved PL, and PL quantum efficiency measurements. The excited state of NS-2T has a larger dipole moment as compared to that of the ground state, explaining the experimental shift

The control of molecular self-assembly on surfaces via specific noncovalent interactions is a key challenge in nanoscience. Using density functional theory (DFT) at the r 2 $^2$ SCAN-3c level, we investigate the intermolecular forces within dimers of Br-Hexahelicene (Br[6]H) adsorbed on Au(111). Through wavefunction analysis using Interaction Region Indicator (IRI), electrostatic potential (ESP), and Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules (QTAIM), we characterize the nature of the halogen contacts. Our results show that the stabilization of the homo-chiral dimers is driven by a distinct CB…

We examine the coherent spin-dependent transport properties of the van der Waals (vdW) ferromagnet Fe4GeTe2 using density functional theory combined with the nonequilibrium Green's function method. Our findings reveal that the conductance perpendicular to the layers is half-metallic, meaning that it is almost entirely spin-polarized. This property persists from the bulk to a single layer, even under significant bias voltages and with spin-orbit coupling. Additionally, using dynamical mean field theory for quantum transport, we demonstrate that electron correlations are important for magnetic p

Electronic structure calculations at the combined density functional theory and multi-reference configuration interaction (DFT/MRCI) level of theory are reported for dimer and trimer pentacene complexes representative of 6,13-bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl)pentacene (TIPS-pentacene) in a brickwork polymorph. In addition to the low-lying correlated triplet pair (CTP) states, high-energetic CTP states are reported which lie above the bright exciton state and feature non-negligible oscillator strength. Stoichiometric materials of Eu(III) offer a promising platform for quantum memories attributable to their unique capability to display a distinctive, nondegenerate 5D0 → 7F0 transition, which enables precise mapping of optical quantum states into their energy-level manifold─a prerequisite for reliable storage and retrieval on demand. However, placing Eu(III) into chiral polar structures, which are necessary for achieving narrow spectral line widths and long optical lifetimes, is a daunting task. Here, we discover Eu2(SeO3)2(SO4)(H2O)2, a rare Eu(III) material that exhibits chiral polar symmetr

A scalable route is presented to upcycle biomass-derived hydrochars into functional carbon quantum dots (CQDs) and apply them as interfacial modifiers for dual-functional solar photocatalysis. Hydrochars obtained by hydrothermal carbonization of bamboo, flax shives, eucalyptus, barley straw, and maple leaves are converted into monodisperse CQDs (2.18-3.46 nm) through mild alkaline peroxide oxidation, yielding high quantum yields and strong visible emission. Integration of these CQDs onto titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanotubes (NTs) forms electronically coupled CQD/TiO2 heterostructures that simulta

We present a complete calculation of radiative corrections to the inverse beta decay reaction, ν[over ¯]_{e}+p→e^{+}+n, at reactor antineutrino energies using heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory. Our analysis consistently incorporates quantum electrodynamics, chromodynamics, and electroweak contributions for the first time within this framework. We provide updated, high-precision cross-section predictions with a full error budget and present the positron energy spectrum, including radiative effects. The results are essential for normalizing the reactor antineutrino flux, determining neutri

The study of phonon dynamics and its interplay with magnetic ordering is crucial for understanding the unique quantum phases in the pyrochlore iridates. Here, through inelastic x-ray scattering on a single crystal sample of the pyrochlore iridate Eu2Ir2O7, we map out the phonon excitation spectra in Eu2Ir2O7and compare them with the theoretical phonon spectra calculated using the density functional theory. Possible phonon renormalization across the magnetic long-range order transition is observed in our experiments, which is consistent with the results of the previous Raman scattering experime

Salts of protonated sulfur dioxide were synthesized by recrystallization of [FS(OX)2][SbF6] (X=H, D) in aprotic solvents at low temperatures. Hemiprotonated sulfur dioxide [(SO2)2H][Sb2F11] was obtained from the solvent SO2 and the monoprotonated sulfur dioxide [OSOD][Sb2F11], using 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane as solvent. For both compounds, single crystals were obtained and an X-ray structure analysis was conducted. Furthermore, the salts were characterized by Raman spectroscopy and the results were discussed together with quantum chemical calculations on the M06-2X/aug-cc-pVTZ level of theory.

We report a fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) system in which the fluorescent donor is fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC) dye and the fluorescent acceptor is CdTe quantum dot (QDs). Based on FRET quenching theory, we designed a method to detect the concentration of silver ions (Ag(+)). The results revealed a good linear trend over Ag(+) concentrations in the range 0.01-8.96 nmol/L, a range that was larger than with other methods; the quenching coefficient is 0.442. The FRET mechanism and physical mechanisms responsible for dynamic quenching are also discussed.

Disorder-induced localization of electrons and electron-electron interaction are among the most fundamental problems in condensed matter physics. In two-dimensional electron systems, extensive studies have led to the emergence of a scaling picture, characterized by a set of universal critical exponents that govern the transitions between the integer quantum Hall plateaus. From the temperature dependence of the plateau-to-plateau transitions, experiments primarily report κ≃0.42, implying a dynamic exponent z=1, consistent with a theoretical picture where electrons have a long-range (1/r) intera
