A multi-modal dataset of electroencephalography and functional near-infrared spectroscopy recordings for motor imagery of multi-types of joints from unilateral upper limb.

As one of the important brain-computer interface (BCI) paradigms, motor imagery (MI) enables the control of external devices via identification of motor intention by decoding the features of Electroencephalography (EEG). Movement imagination of multi-types of joints from the same limb allows the development of more accurate and intuitive BCI systems. In this work, we reported an open dataset including EEG and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) recordings from 18 subjects performing eight MI tasks from four types of joints including hand open/close, wrist flexion/extension, wrist abd

Cerebral near-infrared spectroscopy monitoring to predict periventricular-intraventricular haemorrhage and neurodevelopmental outcomes in preterm infants: a protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Periventricular-intraventricular haemorrhage (PV-IVH) is one of the major cause of mortality and long-term neurodevelopmental sequela in preterm infants born at less than 32 weeks of gestation. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) monitoring can detect brain tissue oxygen saturation changes before the occurrence of PV-IVH in the early postnatal period. However, the time window for NIRS monitoring, the absolute value or change value of brain tissue oxygen saturation, and the accuracy of NIRS in predicting PV-IVH and its neurodevelopmental outcomes has not been systematically reviewed

A Comparison of Immersive vs. Non-Immersive Virtual Reality Exercises for the Upper Limb: A Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Pilot Study with Healthy Participants.

Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) allows for a reliable assessment of oxygenated blood flow in relevant brain regions. Recent advancements in immersive virtual reality (VR)-based technology have generated many new possibilities for its application, such as in stroke rehabilitation. In this study, we asked whether there is a difference in oxygenated hemoglobin (HbO2) within brain motor areas during hand/arm movements between immersive and non-immersive VR settings. Ten healthy young participants (24.3 ± 3.7, three females) were tested using a specially developed VR paradigm, called

The use of broad vs restricted regions of interest in functional near-infrared spectroscopy for measuring cortical activation to auditory-only and visual-only speech.

As an alternative to fMRI, functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is a relatively new tool for observing cortical activation. However, spatial resolution is reduced compared to fMRI and often the exact locations of fNIRS optodes and specific anatomical information is not known. The aim of this study was to explore the location and range of specific regions of interest that are sensitive to detecting cortical activation using fNIRS in response to auditory- and visual-only connected speech. Two approaches to a priori region-of-interest selection were explored. First, broad regions corresp

Detection by near-infrared spectroscopy of large lipid cores at culprit sites in patients with non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction and unstable angina.

OBJECTIVE: This study was performed to assess the lipid burden of culprit lesions in non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (non-STEMI) and unstable angina (UA). BACKGROUND: A recent intracoronary near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) study showed 85% of STEMI culprit lesions have a maximum lipid core burden index in 4-mm (maxLCBI(4mm)) ≥ 400. Whether culprit lesions in non-STEMI and UA are characterized by a similarly large lipid burden is unknown. METHODS: We studied 81 non-STEMI and UA patients undergoing culprit vessel NIRS imaging before stenting. Culprit segments were compared to a

Brain activation characteristics of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder-I patients during letter and category fluency tasks: An empirical study using functional near-infrared spectroscopy.

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia (SP) and bipolar disorder type I (BD-I) are severe psychiatric disorders with partially overlapping clinical symptoms, resulting in difficult differential diagnosis in many cases. Therefore, objective markers are needed to ensure diagnostic accuracy and timely treatment. One strategy with the potential to provide disease markers for diagnosis and reveal potential pathogenic mechanisms is combined cognitive testing and neuroimaging. In the current study, we compared cortical activation patterns among SP, BD-I, and healthy control (HC) groups during verbal fluency tasks

See, Hear, or Feel - to Speak: A Versatile Multiple-Choice Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy-Brain-Computer Interface Feasible With Visual, Auditory, or Tactile Instructions.

Severely motor-disabled patients, such as those suffering from the so-called "locked-in" syndrome, cannot communicate naturally. They may benefit from brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) exploiting brain signals for communication and therewith circumventing the muscular system. One BCI technique that has gained attention recently is functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). Typically, fNIRS-based BCIs allow for brain-based communication via voluntarily modulation of brain activity through mental task performance guided by visual or auditory instructions. While the development of fNIRS-BCIs h
