A Golden Retriever with bilateral conjunctival hyperemia, chemosis, and blepharospasm was determined to have malignant angioendotheliomatosis, which is an uncommon neoplastic disorder of dogs and human beings. It was believed to be of endothelial origin, but evidence in human beings indicates a lymphoid origin. The histogenesis of the disease in the dog was confirmed to be of lymphoid origin by use of a canine lymphoma-specific immunoperoxidase assay. The prognosis for malignant angioendotheliomatosis in dogs is poor, but with early diagnosis, the condition is potentially manageable.

PURPOSE: To test the safety and effectiveness of Doxil chemomyectomy in monkey eyelids using treatment schedules and doses similar to those proposed for the human blepharospasm patients in Phase I and II trials.
METHODS: Bupivacaine/hyaluronidase and Doxil were injected sequentially into the eyelids of five Cynomolgus monkeys. Eyelids received 1, 2, or 3 sets of injections. The monkeys were euthanatized at a minimum of 2 months and a maximum of 12 months after the final treatment. In contrast to the other botulinum toxin products Xeomin only contains the 150kD neurotoxin without complexing proteins which have no therapeutic function and don't influence the diffusion of the neurotoxin. In large clinical Phase III studies (blepharospasm and cervical dystonia) Xeomin showed the same efficacy and profile of adverse events as Botox. Whereas competing product must be stored refrigerated, Xeomin is stable for 3years at room temperature.

We report a Mexican family with two members (mother and daughter) affected with blepharophimosis hereditary syndrome: ptosis of the eyelids, blepharospasm and epicanthus inversus. The daughter presented: hyperopia, astigmatism, hemispheric asymmetry, superficial mental deficiency and ovarian cyst. The mother with ophthalmological affectation, present too border line intellectual quotient. Clinical findings in this family illustrate autosomal dominant trait; differential diagnosis should be taken into account for genetic counselling.

To evaluate muscle histologic features in humans following therapeutic botulinum toxin injections, we studied orbicularis oculi from 11 patients with blepharospasm; nine had previously received botulinum toxin injections and two had not. All muscles had comparable variability in muscle fiber diameter, with no necrosis, inflammation, denervation, or consistent alterations in muscle fiber internal architecture. Botulinum toxin produces no persistent histologic changes in human muscle fibers.

Two young children with unilateral photophobia, redness, blepharospasm and corneal epithelial defects unresponsive to conservative therapy were seen between December 1982 and June 1983. Herpes simplex virus was established as the causal agent in both cases, only after the children had been examined under general anesthesia and appropriate cultures obtained. The difficulties in diagnosing herpetic keratitis in children and the treatment and long-term prognosis are discussed.

We report the results of iron chelating treatment with deferiprone in a 61-year-old woman with signs and symptoms of neurodegeneration with brain iron accumulation (NBIA). After 6 months of therapy the patient's gait had improved and a reduction in the incidence of choreic dyskinesias was observed. Her gait returned to normal after an additional 2 months of therapy, at which time there was a further reduction in involuntary movements and a partial resolution of the blepharospasm.

In the neurologic literature there has been a growing recognition of a syndrome of focal cranial dystonias referred to variously as blepharospasm-oromandibular dystonia, Brueghel's syndrome, or Meige's syndrome. Typically, this syndrome presents as an isolated and idiopathic dystonia of facial or oromandibular muscles occasionally prompting a referral to a speech pathologist. Our findings in a group of 10 patients with this diagnosis are presented, and the negligible effect of an intensive program of speech management for one subject is described.
